FILM DESCRIPTION:
Born to poor parents, Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon) has always aspired to be a member of England's upper classes. Leaving her boarding school and best friend, Amelia (Romola Garai), behind, Becky associates herself with the Crawleys, eventually falling in love with their son, Rawdon (James Purefoy). The marriage is happy at first, but deteriorates when Rawdon's fortune dwindles. Becky is then supported by the lecherous Marquess of Steyne (Gabriel Byrne), whose motives are less than pure.

I liked this version better than 2018 because even though Becky is still the “bad girl” the script tended to show more of her good traits, like this scene when she chooses to stay with her best friend rather than hitch a free ride.

The notion that Romola Garai could EVER be the unpretty/unstriking one next to the admittedly lovely but definitely less pretty/less striking RW is just ridiculous. She’s English, a veteran of these period pieces, an Amazon, a natural ethereal goddess of a blonde in such an uncommon way… she makes RW look like a little girl.

@@lilovs9952 Nobody did, dude. Nor did I accuse anyone of any such thing. But the OP (who went a bit OTT, to be fair) said Garai has those typical 'English rose' looks, which she sort of does. That's why her 'Englishness' was mentioned. So I see their point there. Though they seem to have missed the whole point, too - Becky Sharp is meant to be an outsider who is more interesting than the girl who would have generally been the heroine of an 18th century novel (her aristocratic friend, played by Garai).
