The thing with yo-tsu is that you do not pronounce “tsu” so it’s just yo, especially because it’s a little tsu (っつ) right after yo and nothing is following. It means a fast break right after a word if it ends with it.

Some of the words she pronounced incorrectly, though. "Yo~tsu," is suppose to be more like "yo-" and then you stop in the middle. I don't know why is got romanized like that. "Ossu" should have the "u" omitted in speech. Also, "kuuki yomenai" has a more used abbreviation in the Latin alphabet that she didn't mention: "KY."

The word she's trying to pronounce is よっ(yo'), which indeed means what's up. What's she's saying it よつ(yotsu) and it means... 4. Yeah, I can believe that she actually knows some Japanese but according to her accent and the fact that she can't distinguish a っand a つreally indicate that's it's been a looong time since she actually spoke Japanese and I highly doubt she's fluent.

I assume they are then very pleased with themselves and feel superior...But remember she still spent many of the formative years of her life in Japan and experienced it in a way most people won't have the chance to, no matter how much they study Japanese, watch anime or read manga...
@Claudia-wm5jf
@Claudia-wm5jf 6 жыл бұрын
Thing is, if she spent many of her formative years here, she shouldn't make the simple mistakes she is making. She is a military kid, she probably went to American school on the base and only got the basic Japanese they teach there. That's not on her as a person, she's just not nowhere near fluent in the language in the way that Vogue tried to portray it in the video, and that upsets people. Source: Have spent the last 10 years in Japan and actually speak the language.

@@Claudia-wm5jf I've lived in Detroit for 25 years and never hard chicken as a slang word. It doesn't mean I didn't enjoy this, or that he was wrong. She may have learned (she studied for 8 years and lived there) and lost some it. She may had lived in an area that pronounces things differently, and has a regional accent. You're also not a native speaker, and I'm sure you make mistakes.

Lol, she was on a military base where they go to military school and are in a totally american enviromnent! I've visited the bases! People who study the language properly and live here in JAPANESE society can often pick up the language including slang. I'm not mad at her, more at vogue for asking her to do something she's not equipped to do, ultimately making her seem clueless…

As a Japanese, I have a lot of things what I want to say to this video... First of all, all the accent of the word is strange... よっ Not only the accent but also the pronunciation is clearly wrong. It's not "よつ" but "よっ". Plus, this is not slang. 乾杯, おっす, 空気読めない They are no longer a slang ワロタ This is a slang used only on internet and if you say it in real conversation, it sounds so weird Actually, some people sometimes use it even in real conversation, but it's hard for non-native speakers to know when you can use it At least, it's not common in real conversation

@bee "warota" is relatively new slang(it was born about 15 years ago) and it was originally used only by geeky people on internet, so it's not surprising over 30s or 40s aged people haven't ever used it or heard it at all I mean it's not much common in real conversation as you said lol
