I just bought a senior living apartment. Last week I decided to get rid of things that I have kept for almost 50 years. I kind of got into a pattern of feeling it was my duty to retain things. Pencil case from school, old rosettes, newspaper clippings, photos, paintings, 14 large bags later I feel like I have started my new me/life. I hear you. Great job

I think there are two kinds of people…one likes to throw, give away, get rid of things…too much clutter makes them anxious.The other grp want things around them…they are the savers, the keepers…they feel anxious when too much is missing and feel secure to keep things.Most of us are somewhere in the middle
@shannonking2126 Жыл бұрын
I think you're right. I also suspect that either extreme is somewhat of a psychological issue. Ironically, I heard a man who I think was a radio psychologist saying that persons with an extremely messy desk can have issues, but also a person with an extremely neat, almost empty desktops can also have a psychological problem, because those people often have so much internal, mental confusion going on that they try extraordinarily hard to impose extreme order on their external environments. A desk that has a moderate amount of stuff on it is more normal and usually healthier than either of the two extremes.

I love watching your videos. My comment today is general and not directed at you. I believe that here in the First World, there is a shopping culture. Companies keep churning out goods which we are then supposed to buy to “keep the economy going.” This leads us to having more and more things which eventually choke the joy out of life. Even when we purge, there is so much stuff out there that charities have become very selective about what they take. Our garbage dumps expand and we even export unwanted trash to other countries! I love the concept of “Buy Nothing,” exchanging, where people donate directly to others willing to come and pick up items that can be reused. The hardest part of the whole challenge is simply not buying things in the first place. The second part of this is finding how to responsibly pass no longer needed things along.

I'm about to be out of the military in about 5 months. I'm going to be moving into a van right at my separation. With these cleaning and minimizing videos it sure does motivate me to do the same. I've donated about 6 bags of clothes to goodwill and it is crazy to me that I've been moving all that crap around with me throughout the years. I will say this though. It feels SO GOOD to let things go and get rid of them. I wish I would have done it so much sooner it would have released so much anxiety sooner lol.

I have decluttered and do it often. I have a set of clothes for my Semi and a set for the house. I keep my truck clothes simple and light weight as well as easy to wash up. I have my annual purge coming up and as a few have mentioned I will donate clothes to a local battered woman’s shelter in my area. I’m not sure if you’ve looked into it but I keep my off season clothes in a vac sealed storage bag that I keep in my cabinet so they don’t get in the way of day to day life. I also got rid of my crockpot and I have an Instapot instead because it does so much more than just slow cook. I do rice, roasts/stews on the pressure setting and slow cooker recipes too on the slow cooker…you can cook boiled eggs etc…it replaced 4 pans, and two appliances for me.

OK you have to press on the tofu to get the water out of it. Just put something heavy on top of it like a gallon jug of water or gallon jug of milk or whatever and you press on it and hold it down for a few minutes and then you turn it over and you do it again it will not drain out by itself like that you have to press on it

How great you feel confident in having the resources to replace the items you might need in the future. I guess this is an example of the "disposable " items purchased today that in my time would have been treasures for daily life. Given how the times are lately I hope you never regret your decisions.
@Redrose2795-b8e Жыл бұрын
Most people are getting rid of items they've had for years and are not using anymore. When you outgrow an item no matter how much it originally cost it becomes clutter. Most humans have long lives that's a lot of years to hold on to everything that you've ever owned. If you think it is worth holding on to thousands of items on the off chance that years later you might need one of those items go for it. People forget it also cost money to hold on to and store lots of items that you do not need.

Getting rid of things is very hard. There is always the what if I need it or can't get another one or afford to get another if I find I need it. So the cycle continues. It takes diligence and a commitment. Good for you! We all need to lighten our burden of things. We really don't need all the things we have. I am on this journey as well! You give me the incentive I need to declutter more!

Minimalism (aka decluttering) in a first-world country requires one to have a routine, secure life in which one can purchase when something is needed. This trend is diminishing as the cost of purchasing the same goods has increased compared to previous years.

I wouldn’t think of minimalism as continually repurchasing the same goods. I think minimalism is actually requiring less. I think getting rid of all of one’s possessions just to continue to repurchase and throw away is just maintaining an image of minimalism or more so using the theory as an interior design or organization strategy rather than a shift in consciousness. Neither one better than the other, just different.

I hope I can become stronger like you over time. You inspire me every day 💓

There is no reason you should get rid of things that have such sentimental value for you, as long as you have room for them. There is no moral or psychological "superiority" in letting those things go, as some professional "declutterers" seem to imply -- it's just a personal decision. If you do decide to let any of those things go, at least take a photo of them so you can retain the image.

It's not a sin or shame to cherish items passed down from loved ones! Get rid of items that are just worthless emotionally to you,for example,a sweater or ceramic planter you picked up from Lowe's? You get the idea. Don't beat yourself up!!!!!👍
