I love the idea of thinking about “guidance” instead of “redirection.”

The redirection moment is not used enough teachers don’t know what to do and they want to remove the child from the area , I’m an aide and I see this all the time . I see golden teaching opportunities being passed over all the time . Thank you for the tools you shared in redirection in the moment . Vital modern up to the minute information .

All is so true and simple if your teacher heart is in it. All children just need your time.

And then u get the other kids who catch on to what ur doing, and they end up being redirected.

Vanessa, I really enjoyed this episode because I know how important it is to keep children on task and when there is too much down time, the kids find something else to do! I have one question. During circle time, I often have a child who out-of-nowhere hits or kicks another child or last week, she decided to put her teeth on my arm! I always have to stop and attend to this child. I have a small class but it is easy to lose the other student's attention in whatever we were doing. I also have an assistant but I always have to tell my assistant to please have this child sit with her or have some "me time" in the library center. The child also refuses to leave circle time and needs to physically be coaxed away from others. Thanks for your advice!

I think a lot of teachers “redirect" by saying "no thank you." And that might be a good thing to hammer out on the podcast.😊

@@PreKPagesvideos or redirecting by putting them separately from the group, i.e. timeout. But they can still see whatever ur doing, and “can still be part of the group”!

Would you agree that sometimes the best thing to do is change what you’re doing and adapt if children aren’t able to regulate at circle time. By this I mean stop the story and sing a song or do a movement activity instead. 3 -5 year olds aren’t always meant to sit and ‘forcing’ them to is counter productive. Redirect your plan to fit the needs of the children.

I hear the word appropriate a lot in this. Here’s a question: appropriate to whom?

Hello, i have a question about how you get a preschooler to clean up after lunch or snack? I have a preschooler who gets up 10 minutes before lunch is over with and lay on his cot with a book, and i am ok with that, but he won't clean up or go and wash his hands. I had tried to show him what to do as well as asked him

I am new in the field. I am a preK assistant. There are a few students that are challenging when it comes to following directions and actually listen. However my lead will yell at them and they pay attention and will listen. The lead is trying to not continue this behavior. So any suggestions to get my students to listen.

Can you help? I live overseas and have two young boys that behave differently. In this country they will not be diagnosed. They cannot sit, can participate for moments, and do not seem to even see others. They are not hyper. I’m working with staff that expect perfect behavior. How can we handle letting these children be with us in the class but not participate like the others.? Other students that are more capable want to follow them. Can I let the other students know one thing is expected from them but not the other?????

I really enjoyed listening to this podcast however I am visualizing how some of these scenarios will go and in regards to circle or large group time I can see having that child help with turning the pages or using my wand or holding a puppet it becomes a distraction or others start to get upset because the children that are not causing a distraction at circle are never chosen because they are not disrupting the circle.

It's not all or nothing. Dan St. Romain says it best, "You don't always get what you want, you get what you need." Everybody has different needs, therefore our responses to those needs are individual to the child. Having a child help with one thing doesn't mean that same child helps with everything all the time at the exclusion of others, it's about balance and being responsive. If other children are feeling excluded then it's information you can use to determine how you will respond. For example, gather your students together, without the child in question, and explain how we're all different and unique. "Some of us know how to (listen to a story, keep our hands to ourselves etc) but some of us are still learning. As a class, it's our job to help each other learn, and one way to do that is..." you get the picture. Look for my episodes with Dan St. Romain, we probably talk about this in one of our videos.

What if there are 3 or 4 kids that you have that can’t sit through a book or even a circle time?
