ABOUT VAN NEISTAT:
A pioneer in digital filmmaking, Van Neistat made his first internet video, The Holland Tunnel, in 2000. He went on to collaborate with New York City artist Tom Sachs, directing a series of short films shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. Van has since directed dozens more films for the Tom Sachs Studio. In 2010 HBO aired The Neistat Brothers, an 8-episode series of short videos made entirely by Van and his brother Casey Neistat. Van Neistat’s directorial debut feature, A SPACE PROGRAM, co-written by Tom Sachs, premiered at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival and opened in theaters nation-wide in spring, 2016. Picked up a 1999 Tacoma sr5 from Georgia. 5 speed, 125 thousand miles , No rust, solid frame for $2000. Put on new tires , alignment and some serious cleaning, waxing. Gets comments everywhere I drive it here in Michigan. Now my dive truck for summer. Never gets rain or snow on it ! Love it !! Incredibly dependable. Seriously the last vehicle I ever own !

There is a lot more engineering in a Toyota 4x4 than just the engine. The entire design of the vehicle is all still Toyota. Same wheel base, same suspension geometry, same everything, except with more power. Whooptie doo.

Bought my ‘94 80 series as a lease return in ‘97 here in LA. Joined a newsgroup out of Australia while I was doing research and over the next 10 years learned almost everything there is to know about 80 series from this group. Then in 2011 I was brought down to Sydney to work on a film. The newsgroup was pretty much dormant as they had mostly moved to 100 series. I sent an email and they all chimed in, set up a reunion and took me on a short trip to the Wattigans. Great to meet them after all those years. Still have my 80 series.

Van, in England we have the same thing but with old Land Rover Defenders. I couldn’t afford a high end rebuild so I bought an old one and have done it my self, bit by bit. The thing you need the most from that TLC specs is the anti rust coating on the chassis, which is powder coating. Then maybe the full floating axle and some minor mods for driving comfort. You could do it slowly. You almost certainly dont need the ls3 engine swap, the locking diffs are a waste if you dont go offroad often. Sound proofing, you can do it yourself. Haha. Bigger fuel tank, you can always bring a few jerry cans with you.

DONT - it totally ruins them. The joy of the Mita [MX6 over here] is the balance and fun to drive. If you stick a big lump up front they stere like a pig and you cant get that power down anyway as there is no weight on the back end. Just have the existing block professionally rebuilt to the speck you want and maintain the balance.

The spirit of this video is felt where I live and work in Bali, where old Land Cruisers, Daihatsu Taft (Rocky) and Suzuki Jimny (Samurai, Katana) never die; parts are readily available; and mechanics do good work even if under the shade of some trees. My own daily driver is a 1988 Suzuki Katana (Jimny) that is mechanically fully restored but with some “patina” on the body. I will probably never sell it. Thanks for this video.

I had a Samurai. I loved driving it so much but the soft top leaked in the rain and the carburetor wouldn't stop having problems even after a rebuild. I eventually got tired of the cost of constant repairs so I had to sell it. I hope I can drive a Samurai again some day.

Dad had a 60 series Sahara growing up as a kid, I still remember the brown interior and smell of it. Dad drove me around the block on he’s lap and let me help him steer what I thought to be a monster truck (I was 4 years old). I’d get driven to and from school in it and we went on many small adventures. I remember standing next to the wheels and they were as big as me! It blew a head gasket one day and sat in our front yard for years til a younger guy offered to buy it. We had bought a tarago in the meantime so we didn’t need it. He sold it to the young guy and it got towed away… I’m 21 now and have been reminiscing on the old girl. This year I decided to buy an 80 series diesel LandCruiser and have spent all my savings fixing it up! I don’t really care about money at this point, I’m going to drive it up and down the east coast of Australia and enjoy the hell out of it. I’ve already had some memorable moments with it and It’s so awesome to own one of these… I truly enjoy it every time I turn the key. They are awesome trucks and I can’t wait to keep it for many years and hopefully try my luck with a 60 series one day! Like father like son. Let the adventure begin!

I learned to drive in a Toyota Landcruiser 1980 (60 series) turbo diesel. That vehicle was a lot of fun. I think it got sold in 1997 with over 2 million km on the clock. Thankyou for the beautiful memories.

When i was maybe 14 I saw an old beat down, diamond plated fj40 on Marthas Vinyard during a fishing trip. It changed my life. Once I was out of school and had the finances, i bought myself a silver 1987 fj60 and drove it daily for over 10 years. Looks just like the one in this vid but it runs on gas, lots of it. This is a 1987 truck with a 4.2 L straight six that redlines at.......4000 rpm. 4 speed manual transmission with NO OVERDRIVE. It has a pull choke like a pushmower. The suspension would fit right in on the Oregon trail. There is a small hole in the body below the radiator meant for an emergency hand crank for starting the engine by hand if your battery dies, although there has never been a documented case of someone actually starting one that way. Dont leave your millennial or younger kids in there on a hot day cus they wont know how to work the windows. The beauty of these things is in their simplicity. Your senses arent dulled by horespower and all sorts of technology. That allows you to hear the truck whispering to you when something is failing. And because its a landcruiser you can usually put the repair off for 10k miles because sometimes you really are in Botswana, 4 days drive from the nearest electricity. A point not lost on organizations such as the UN, doctors without borders, and basically every military in the world. Jonathan ward makes amazing trucks and i would certainly be proud to own one. But they are not landcruisers. If you want a landcruiser with a v8 go buy yourself the best 100 series you can find, preferably 05-07, preferably without AHC. Probably cost you 25k. As the owner of an 06 i can honestly tell you its soul is every bit a cruiser in spite of the creature comforts. My 80 with factory e lockers had the best 4wd system out of any model cruiser, but the 100 is the best all around landcruiser in my opinion. Get one and save yourself 200k and the 2 years of your life you would waste waiting for the tlc to be built.

Growing up in Australia and learning to drive during the early 2000s, 60 series cruisers and FJ / HJ40/45/47s along with Hilux's and Patrols, these were the cheap and affordable 4wds we all had as kids. I had a clean low mileage 1988 HJ61 VX high roof with a 12HT that cost me $9000.... sold it 5 years later for $15k, thought that was smart 😞 a similar spec HJ61 now would cost $40k
