One of the absolute most informative and thoughtful ways of presenting this kick. I've studied for 15 years be between an ITF and WTF school, and have not heard or seen this fairly complicated kick presented so well (GNT was good but I found this way of presenting more thoughtful, for those that want to understand their martial arts as much as just kicking). I'm not happy with my current technique and now I know what to work on. Thanks again! I'm really looking forward to more of your training videos!

Perfect quality of the complicated technique! Bravo! Lifting the hiel of the supporting leg might be questioned by many Western practitioners as it impacts the stability. But I know that thai kickboxers learn it that way from the early years and get tremendous results in high kicks. Mostly due to impressive speed.
@VanRoonMartialArts5 жыл бұрын
Yes! Interesting observation :D A Wushu coach of mine 10 years ago explained the heel as similar to a brake when pivoting on the ball of the foot. I think that's a good way to look at it. As you said, more stable but also as a consequence more resistance to generating rotation of speed of the pivot.

Many moons ago in another life I was asked by my very first instructor whom I started with at age 16 to help one of his then current brown belts prep for black belt testing due to living MUCH closer to this student. At this time I believe we (the student & I) were both mid 20s. The big difference being he was also lean but about double my body weight. So I was HEAVILY dependant during sparring sessions on my speed and additional 6 -7 years of experience. We both discovered quite inadvertently that this precise kick actually was more effective at what are normally considered boxing range and still so at knees and elbows range. That foot gets behind their head and neck then the heel impacts during what would be the retraction phase. Driving right down into the neck or the traps right above the shoulder. Both wonderfully soft landing targets compared to a skull. Pretty monumental crushing force from a totally unexpected angles behind the gaurd and even the head despite stupidly close ranges. Bonus discovery. At these ranges with body parts flailing like drunken dancers at a rave any telegraphing that did actually occur was hidden in the fog of limbs and the speed at which the entire spin and kick occur since one really isn't trying to reach toward the apponent just reaching and curling around their guard like a whip or rope wrapping around whatever it is swung against. Hope that all made sense.

I have ITF background as well but went to american boxing after moving and miss the kicks. So i practice them on my own. Thumbs up for the reference to JC Van Damme who was a kickboxing pioneer. My limitation I cannot do the split although i am flexible, it makes the inertia balance more challenging because i have to bend more at the hips to reach high when spinning.
@VanRoonMartialArts5 жыл бұрын
Have you tried strengthening your kicking muscles more, rather than focusing on flexibility? I've been thinking I'll do a video on more of this type of approach, and it should help a lot more than forcing through conventional stretches. You definitely don't need to do a full split to throw this kick well. Cheers! CvR

@@VanRoonMartialArts Thanks a lot for your masterly guidance. Your exercise of continual rotation on one leg, the other leg stretched out has been added to my training. This also made me remember how we trained kicking to exhaustion, where at the end of a two hours session we could barely lift our legs. I wish TKD gyms nowadays were not crowded with pre-teen children and their parents. It gives a children daycare ambiance not a martial art gym. Not at all the atmosphere i remember from years ago in England, Nottingham University TKD club. Different time, different place.
