Having renovated a couple of decks in the past, I would recommend putting a barrier layer on top of all the beams and joists. Much like a self adhesive ice and water shield for your roof, this will help keep the water from pooling between the deck boards and prematurely rotting the deck structure. I've sent many rolls of this material to Home Depot stores across western Canada, from Calgary. We redid a deck that was only 15 years old and all of the joists had to be replaced because of water pooling causing premature rot. The older deck had the joists covered with tar paper(strips of roofing felt) and there was little to no damage to them. A few extra dollars in the upfront cost, but major savings down the road. Looking forward to the finished product. Get well soon.
