Makes you wonder. They obviously test the crap out of these at Nike. How do they send a tester out for one or two runs, he comes back after 20 miles and the react foam is SHREDDED. And they say "eh good enough ship it at $250"
@ashhoushmand5 жыл бұрын
It's more to do with product testing and seeing that maybe out of the 100 runners they brought out to test it, 5 or 6 of them had this issue. If they were going to change the design then that pushes them back and then have to test again, rinse and repeat. if 5 out of 100 runners have this issue, it's good enough for a V1. Alongside if the issue is only cosmetic and not performance, it's not as big of a deal. For V2 though, as seen here, they improved on it and fixed an issue than was known.
@kofuzi5 жыл бұрын
I think to go back at the time of the release of v1, they were thinking that, to the extent it's a cosmetic issue, people might deal with it for the sake of the performance. Also, their product testers might not have encountered this issue as they likely had better running mechanics than me.
@caseyf37905 жыл бұрын
React foam??
@mechadriver50885 жыл бұрын
So, I have gotten use to this issue with both the VF FK and ZF FK. For individuals that drag their heels (on the edge of the outsole), the individual "pods" of hard rubber don't protect the foam enough. It doesn't look very pleasing from a cosmetic perspective, but unclear it if significantly impacts normal life expediency of the shoe. I use shoo-goo across all my shoes to help (not just these Nikes).

Kofuzi. The seam that you see on the midsole of each of the shoes is actually the seam where they've put the carbon fibre plate they give you basically two layers of zoom X so one actually attached to the upper then they have one With the carbon plate inside and then fuse them together. I wouldn't advise it but if you pull/push with your thumb just below the seem at the heel it will eventually separate and reveal where the carbon plate is.

First, appreciate your "disclosures" at the start of your videos (and I'm not even a lawyer). Regarding the 4%'s/Next, my Zoom Fly Flyknits wear in the same place (outer heel quadrant). A question: Is the black sole material on the 4% flyknit the same material as the surrounding white material? I had made the presumption that the black was a layer of carbon black rubber, which whilst heavier I think would be more durable than straight Zoom X. If it's purely cosmetic, and the materials are the same, then I'm indifferent, but if it is carbon black rubber then it would make sense for Nike to extend it out to the edge in that specific section of sole. Just my thoughts. Thanks.
@kofuzi5 жыл бұрын
The black part is rubber

I'm surprised you have heel / lockdown issues in the flyknit. I think the whole shoe is tight everywhere on its own. I literally barely tie mine. Same with Zoom Fly Flyknit as well. 🤷🏻♂️
@mechadriver50885 жыл бұрын
I have lockdown issues in the VF also (but I run 1/2 size up). I have similar issues with the ZF (run TTS) but not as bad. I find that sizing/allowance for stretching is critical with the flyknit shoes or I have lockdown/overtight lacing issues. Even when I do get the shoe dialed without heel lift, corners/turns still feel unstable.
@kofuzi5 жыл бұрын
i don't really even tie my flyknit (vaporfly or zoomfly). but the heel still feels a bit loose when walking around or when not running.

Terrific video showcasing the 3 variants. Would have loved to see Nike keep the wider heel of the Vaporfly 1 on the Next%2 or Next$ 1. For those wanting a little more stablity when cornering or just for heel-strikers (which most runners should be IMHO). And bring back the outsole rubber on the Vaporfly 1....I'd assumge having traction on the heel would benebit..."more traction " rather. And why Nike hasnt talked to any of hte tire companies (as Adias has with Continental) Im not sure. Why not talk to a company like Pierelli or Yokohama, Michelein, Goodyear.....how better to add that extra feture that really might make a differene in performance and sales. The tire used on a Porsche 911....on a Nike "race shoe"....Partner with Porsche and the tire company they are using....create an ad.....Porsche 911 next to Eliud Kipchogi in Vaporfly Next$ 3's feturing Pierelli outside...."Who will win?" :) I mean if the tire compound can help a 3000 plus pound car accelerate to 60MPH in 3.2s and stop it .... Nike needs to start nnovating the midsole/outsole.....and plate placement....Asics is doing more "thinking" iti seems with their Metaspeed shoes. They're just not yet finding their way onto the feet of the top elite runners yet (beccause they're locked in with Nike....perhaps their contracts are about to end?)....

Great review! So, how many miles do you think the Vaporflys are good for? I've read many online evals saying 100 miles or so, but it's not clear if this is from the soles being scuffed/torn/shredded, or from the cushioning going dead (my typical reason for retiring shoes at about 300 mi). I have about 150 mi on the 4% and can't tell the difference in the cushioning or bounce much at all compared to a new pair (I know... I bought into the hype). And other Nike shoes w the same (?) ZoomX last 300+ miles? Next time I run and see a puddle, I will splash in it ... even if I'm in Vaporflys.
@kofuzi5 жыл бұрын
i don't know. but i'll be investigating this summer. if the shoe still feels good to you, i would continue to run in it. i think it's too easy to conflate numbers (in this case, mileage) with a specific conclusion or result. mileage is just a reference point.

Just did a run yesterday in Next % so no have run in all three. Original version I found the upper not supportive enough in the forefoot that resulted in my foot moving around a lot. The Flyknit version was definitely a lot better for me in that area. The Next % upper seems ok on an initial run but I am concerned it will also stretch out and make the forefoot less controlled. I didn't notice. difference between the ZoomX on the Original vs the Flyknit versions. Next % is obviously different. I am a mid to forefoot striker hence the emphasis on forefoot snugness of the upper. Been running in Nikes since late 70's my favourite trainer / racer shoes must still be the Vortex and Air Edge - the original versions , full air soles , US made.

I don't like the zoom fly as a daily trainer. And if you put a plate in the turbo (which I also don't love as a daily trainer), isn't that pretty much a vaporfly?
@joshuabushyhead69865 жыл бұрын
@@kofuzi , the Turbo has a completely different upper than the Vaporflys, so it wouldn't be a Vaporfly.

Is the hell toe drop / offset different on 4% compared to next %
@kofuzi5 жыл бұрын
yes. i believe it's 8mm. but it's negligible compared to the feeling of the extra zoom x.

Assuming you like the sizing in those, I'd go with that

Read a great article that stated if these shoes were swimming wear the international governing body would ban them from official competition. Will the IAAF doing anything, one thinks not.

there aren't a lot of rules in regards to footwear, as far as i understand. i think the only main limitation is that they must be an actual production shoe. there's not a lot of definition in that regard, which is why i think we saw the "release" of this shoe via the NRC app on the day of the London Marathon

Nike’s marketing is confusing...which % is it?
@kofuzi5 жыл бұрын
Some people will say that next percent is like a 5%. But I'd say that the number of 4% is one of those numbers where digital precision is but an illusion and a poor prognosticator of one's potential experience. Kind of like heel drop. How I look at it is that I'd easily pick the Next % over a 4%

Do they have same size? In my case v1 is 42.5 and FlyKnit is 43, like other shoes. I'm curious which size should I use for Next% in case if I decide to buy it :)

Nike is geared toward consumers thinking brand wil make you run faster. I ran in a Saucony & destroyed 80% of the 5K runners & I only trained for 3 months as a non-runner.

I think the earlier versions of Peg Turbo were more squishy feeling. It’s stiffer in the newer ones.
