somebody wrote about people like this couple that she doesn’t seem spiritual and usually the Westerners who go to varanasi are the neo spiritual types who are looking for something different than the usual Judeo-Christian religious stuff and think everything from the East is the bee’s knees ... google translate shows meaning of "bee’s knees" in hindi as सर्वोत्कृष्ठ (sarvotkrshth) which means "the best" ... specific temple visit may be marred by a festival like for example mahashivaratri and ritual prayer will have no meaning for Westerners unless you have been doing it for some time and it seems to give peace and spiritual experience howsoever you have preconceived it ... most Westerners confuse what you get from yog with temple visit or they have visited a temple like an iskcon or akshardham somewhere in west or even another temple somewhere in india and they assume they will have same experience in a busy temple during a festival rush with milling crowd of indians

👍... That evening aarti was one of our Varanasi highlights, too, when we visited in March. We didn't even attempt to get into that temple you gave up on, as we had read that non Hindus couldn't go, but there was conflicting information on that point. We had a sunrise boat plus guided tour, though, and visited some small temples with the guide. The Tulsi Manas temple we visited on our own. It houses a collection of animated puppets depicting scenes from Hindu mythology - just utterly amazingly exotic. I can so understand that you were exhausted. We too found Varanasi quite hard to navigate, cramped and smelly. But the Ganges was just utterly fascinating, so much to see and experience... so much that it wasn't quite possible for me to process all the impressions on the spot... But in hindsight - what a great place - quite a revelation if you think about it.

Wow that's interesting. Yes we couldn't agree more about the thoughts you had on Varanasi. Such a busy place but so memorable and so much going on that it's hard to process everything.

Still in India? If yes, winter is the perfect time to explore these northern wonders Himachal Pradesh: Manali, Shimla, Kullu, Spiti Valley, and Rohtang Pass are all covered in snow, offering the best winter experiences. Uttarakhand: Auli for skiing, Rishikesh for peaceful winter vibes, and Nainital for a cozy lakeside winter escape. Jammu & Kashmir: Gulmarg is a skier's paradise, Srinagar offers magical Shikara rides, and Leh-Ladakh feels like a winter wonderland. Northeast India: Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim-perfect for chilly weather, peaceful treks, and snow-covered landscapes. Winter brings out the best in these places, making it the ideal season to visit. Don't miss out on the magic!

Thank you for providing your unfiltered experience of Varanasi. It also shocked me as I thought cleanliness, basic hygiene and people’s behaviour have improved somewhat considering government’s efforts on improving things. But apparently the needle has not moved. They are way too many people who cares too hoots about civility.

Seeing death humbles you, its a very important learning....we all are mortals. Just enjoy the very very short life you have. You were dead for very very very long, and you will be dead again for very very very long time. And the happiest you feel is when you are enjoying life. So don't waste a moment!
@ShauryaTomar-ie6jq4 күн бұрын
The thing is that earlier times ganga used to be clean , so the bodies would easily get dissolve by anaerobic bacteria in water as DOD was less Now due to factory dumping in it liq waste (govt's doing its best I am sure ) DOD has increased so level of oxygen in ganga is less so anaerobic bacteria is also less So many bodies take time to get dissolved !

16:30 That is not correct. Govt does not allow that. But yes an unborn, a new born and someone who has attained some level of spiritual well-being are not cremated but buried in present times. No not left in river. Fire is considered the purest thing in the religion and hence for most others cremation is the purification process. But again, bodies are not left in river. That was something that might have happened upto 50 years back may be.

That is life. True meaning of life . Varanasi gives you true meaning of life . death is part of life and nature ,by knowing that you are a drop 💧 in ocean of universe or universal cosmos ,varanasi teaches you simplicity embrace humanity and accept that death , suffering is also a part of nature . Shiva is lord which controls the destruction in nature so that new life will begin ,without him new life or new star will not emerge . Varanasi is abode for praising lord shiva❤

You didn’t get their feelings. They don’t disagree with the spiritual importance of Varanasi, but cleanliness is entwined with spirituality which is utterly lacking in infrastructure and people’s behaviour. I don’t know when will people start embracing cleanliness and basic hygiene.

hahaha! India has so many amazing things to show you and to offer if you like Santana Dharma and visiting historical landmarks. You can spend years exploring and only end up seeing only fraction of everything there but if you visit India as you would other countries don't expect to be pampered and catered to like you would in western countries. Find a guide you can trust and let them take you around and if you want a quick beach getaway go to Goa or find another still undiscovered village or town with clear blue water and quiet beaches near the coast.

you are saying ghaat as if you are saying gatt ... when indians transliterate a word using "gh" then sound expected is expirated "g" ... if you search "translate english to hindi" on google and translate english word pier you will get घाट "ghaat" in hindi and you can play how the word is spoken by native speakers of hindi by clicking on speaker icon

I was 10 or 11 years old when I went to Varanasi with my parents. I swore to never return to the city of Varanasi ever again and I haven’t gone back as an adult. It’s one city in India I absolutely loathe with the chaos and the scammers and the touts and the smell of death everywhere. I was born a Hindu and my parents still older and alive, are practicing ones but I can’t see myself going back to Varanasi. Every foreigner seems to go there and I can’t understand the allure of the city. My childhood visit to Varanasi scarred me for life. I don’t know why you went there seeing as you don’t seem spiritual and usually the Westerners who go there are the neo spiritual types who are looking for something different than the usual Judeo-Christian religious stuff and think everything from the East is the bee’s knees.
