Varangian Guards Guide

Disclaimer: Guide was based on the original iteration of the VG's after their AI fixes, most things in the guide no longer applies to VGs.
basically going over the new gold unit of season 12 Varangian guards, their mechanics and examples of unit matchups.
Also there is bias in this because I prefer my current veterancy line but going full tank does let the unit survive better.
EDIT: full top line better than middle top for coordinated play such as TW and mosh pit because you can animation cancel the third stage and the unit will cycle many times.
EDIT 2022-09-08: Unit has been nerfed where they no longer have infinite hits, will need to reassess the abilities of the unit as not having infinite hits is a very big change to the unit, therefore some of the unit matchups in this video are no longer the case.

Great video! I like your way to test max hit number of VG. Can you have a vid for Chevalier Guide? Someone tell me about use double shot doctrine for crossbow retinue unit, when chevalier active skill crosssbow unit will auto active double shot. I want to know if it really works or not. Thank you.

what skill tree is better? the full top five 25% dmg reduction isnt that better?

Basically the middle top works better for separated engagements pretty much but the full top is better for big fights etc, actually at this point I swapped to full top because you won’t find 1v1s as often as big team fights in ranked and TW xD

Yeah usually reapers would engage with just walking in and pressing 2, we’ve also tried flail reapers charge into sword reaper 2 and tried charge into 2 but in an actual battle you would charge like that, because if there’s any braced pike unit or an ipg walk the reaper unit gets oneshot :( sadge

Modao cannot win Varangian because the Piercing unit cant do high dmg on Shield unit, the only way to win is Charge 1st getting the burst dmg and follow by Striking pierce, this will take out Varangian 60-80% hp when not in shield formation and then Modao Stand still formation skill to take the dmg from the Varagian to reduce chance of getting crowded slap by Varangian, this method only good when holding the spot while other's help you kill off the Varangian while Modao tanking the rest of the dmg, If Modao didnt hold still, they die instantly due to stacking together after the piercing skill, best die holding the ground rather than getting 1hit slap. i always use this method to counter Varangian unit and it work Perfectly. To those who use Modao never forget that this is Piercing unit only the March is Striking dmg that do 0 dmg on Shield Formation so it wise to wait for the enemy to rush you rather than rushing your Modao getting non dmg end up losing the unit. Every Siege/War...Varangian Everywhere!
