She is the vala most revered by the elves, for she accomplished the greatest deed of all the valar - the creation of the stars. She is known for hearing all voices from every corner of the world and for seeing Melkor's darkness before all others - and it is she whom the dark lord fears most.

How about a video explaining why there had to be such a long wait for the elves and men to awake in the first place (and dwarves to reawake)? As I understand it the world was already formed and had been habitable for thousands of years already by the time they awoke, and they themselves were also fully formed, so what was the wait for? Not Varda herself but you should have included the moment when Frodo and Sam see stars through a hole in the cloud in Mordor and it fills them with hope because even in Mordor there is a light and beauty that even the darkness can not reach and a sign that even the darkest darkness will fade and the light endure.

A clear sign of Varda's power is that once the sun appears for the first time in the sky, Morgoth and all his servants hide beneath the ground in fear. I also like that because of Varda's original plan, the sun rises for the first time in the West, not in the East, so when the second children of Illúvatar, men, awake at this hour, they first see the sun as the elves once saw the stars. And because they first saw the sun rise in the West, their steps often lead them in this direction.

An online friend has been looking at Tolkien's stories through the eyes of Catholicism, since Tolkien was a devout Catholic. Despite Tolkien saying his stories were not religious parables, he admitted that his Catholic world view nonetheless permeates his writings. My friend, who is also Catholic, says that Varda is a picture of Mary, Queen of Heaven. When I look at some of the paintings used in this clip, the Catholic apparel can be seen on Varda.

Thought the same thing when listening to these descriptions. Following Revelation 12, Catholic theology teaches that Mary is the "woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars." Of course, Tolkien eschewed analogy, but you can't help but feel the resonance.

The description of Varda by Tolkien most certainly shows that St. Mary, mother of Jesus is the model that Tolkien lovingly inserted into his universe. Melkor fears and hates Varda in the same measure Lucifer hates Mary......nearly all her attributes are a slap against all that he stands for as well as a challenge against him. As an aside.....reading the Litany to our Lady shows how close Varda plays the same role in Ëa (along with the other queens of the Valar) Just as an aside...while many See Manwë, her husband to be modelled by St. Michael the archangel.....he may be actually St. Joseph (earthly father of Jesus).....St. Micheal most closely resembles the Valar Tulkas

As a Catholic, I think Tolkien based a lot of Varda (consciously or unconsciously) on Mary, Jesus's mother, and how Catholics revere her - "To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve" "O Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners". Both are figures people cry to for help and mercy. Plus, I remember Mary being described this way in Heaven: "She is clothed with the sun, the moon beneath her feet, and wears a crown of twelve stars."

The Valar, being divine beings below the ultimate Creator, Iluvatar, are thought of as being the Middle-earth equivalent of saints and angels; it has therefore been suggested that Varda, in her role as the most loved and prayed-to Vala, may be an equivalent of the Virgin Mary in Tolkien's own Catholic faith. Another suggestion is the goddess of wisdom, Sophia, also associated with the stars.

While it was not the author's intent, there are also a plethora of similarities to Buddhist wisdom goddess Tara. Her name means "star", she is often said to have the radiance of the moon in one eye and the sun in the other. I've also seen a single thangka which depicted her with the Big Dipper constellation in the sky above her, though I've not been able to find any info on what inspired the inclusion of that element (it's not usually depicted as such).

Satan (Morgoth) fears the Virgin Mary (Varda) more than all the angels and saints combined. In an exorcism, the Catholic priests by their authority, forced the demons to tell the truth. The priests asked the demons why they are so terrified of the Virgin Mary. Their answer was simple: because she is humble. They even added that her immense power comes from her humility.

Just before the awakening of the elves, Varda's inscription of the constellations she formed from the ancient stars into the skies of Arda can be considered as a reflection of the understanding she gained from the Music of the Ainur, just like Mandos. In this context, it can be said that there is a relationship between Varda's constellation of Menelmacar and the Second Prophecy of Mandos due to the fact that both Vala (Varda-Mandos) understand each other's melodies in accordance with the theme of the music, and each harmonizes their own tune with the other. According to this, it can be said that Tolkien created the cosmogony of the universe he created in his mythology and accordingly his astrology, albeit at a simple level, through Varda. It can be thought that Varda and Mandos, who participated in the music performance in the Music of the Ainur, which is the creation of the universe (Eä), developed to the extent that they mutually understood each other's melody and that Varda created an astrology of the universe within itself by reflecting this to the sky of Arda through the constellations.

"for Melkor she knew from before the making of the Music and rejected him". This is all we know from Varda and Melkor before Time. The Valar did not originally look human. Why would they? They didn't even know what humans or elves would look like until they met them. That's why Aule didn't know how to make dwarves look human. So why do we anthropomorphize them? It's the same reason why so many illustrations of them look European. Because we can't imagine a god that doesn't look like us. How limited. How narrow minded. How human.

My parents named me Elbereth Laurelin. I was teased a lot because I was a kid before the movies came out and after the books fell out of popularity. This is one of the better-done videos about my name. Thank you. Do you know why they didn't use Elbereth in the movies?

Indeed. I’ve chatted with multiple Tolkien scholars and fans and it’s one of those mispronunciations I held onto from the Silmarillion audiobook. It’s definitely taken some effort to adjust!

Hey Nerd of the Rings… I have a question about LotR to ask you, I would love it if you could answer. So, in Fellowship, Sam comes along because he was eavesdropping. My question is, why was Gandalf even telling Frodo about the Ring right where Sam could hear? Wouldn’t a wise old wizard make sure he is in a place where he wouldn’t be caught talking of the Ring? (Especially since the Ring is so important to the fate of the WORLD). Why would he talk in a room right next to the garden with the window open, and continue to talk after he has heard the sound of Sam outside? Also, I am wondering, did you find this detail odd on your first reading and subsequent re-reads? I am very curious about this, because I have found only one post on the internet bringing up Gandalf’s lack of caution. I would have thought this blunder by Gandalf would have been brought up by fans all the time and used as an example that Gandalf is not infallible. But no, it is hardly talked about, and when it is, it’s a simple “oh and Gandalf caught Sam let’s move on.” I think this detail could lead to a very interesting discussion on the secret of the Ring. There are also many other instances I could name where the characters are quite reckless with the secret too. I just thought a book with so many experts and die-hard fans would be looked into as close as possible. I would like to know what you think on the matter.
