The creepiest things are the unnerving sounds, not the potential presence of aliens. What are they gonna do? Beam you up? and then what? That's not scary. ...except if they do the needle scene and erase your safe file.

The presence of danger doesn't have to show up ever, if it can delude player into thinking it exists, then it creates a perfect atmosphere for horror. Man, after watching recent episodes of Joel’s VOTV stream, there’s something to be said for the ultra-focused horror of Signal Simulator. I GET the fear of the bathroom in this one, it’s terrifying how normal it is. …that being said, in terms of horror, the lack of alien catgirls probably helps. I couldn’t take votv seriously after they showed up, suspension of disbelief flew out the window.

Like the moment Joel describes, when they show in the news an alien passing near a mexican kid birthday, that scared the shit out of me when I was a kid too, because it was filmed like some found footage being show at the news. Is a really tense moment. Watching that as a kid has the same effect as watching I.T. as a kid. You know, the reason a lot of people developed bozophobia
