Honestly, I still feel the original containment breach is one of the best horror games I've ever played. The randomly generated layout combined with the fact that the "monster" ai, despite being simple, cant eally be easily messed with or made to act predictably (like the classic joel table gambit) give it a natural omnipresent tension I've only seen games like subnautica be able to match. There's absolutely no indication a scare is coming, so you're almost never ready for it - and honestly, the low quality graphics of add to the weird *offness* of the atmosphere it has. Bonus fact: The lead dev of the original CB (whose very first game was the aforementioned scp smile one) is actually the guy who's now in charge of the company making Barotrauma, which you may have heard of. Spoke to him once online, he's a nice guy.

@@COSMINIC yeah, they even categorize the "levels" with creatures you can find in there. I would personally be more interested in the idea of said "levels" distinguishing eachother by form of strange task, or something without purpose entirely. Creatures get oversaturated, I feel, but pure abstract ideas/scenery sounds like it has much more shelf life.
@MoBisley Жыл бұрын
This is why Kane Pixels probably has the best backrooms lore. It's so ambiguous and there's very little of the creature. Also the theory rn is the creatures are like the immune system of the back rooms and they're actually humans that have been consumed by the fungus/ bacteria that has accelerated growth in the backrooms.

The appeal to me has always been like how the Midwest inspires horror. Drop a pin on Google Maps in Saskatchewan or Montana and you will see just nothing. But you're on a road and theres a fenced off field, so someone has to live here, but there is nothing. Nothing at all relevant to life. You get left there without a car and a phone and you die, and thats it. Backrooms is the same way. Theres wallpaper and hallways, signs of human interaction, but theres nothing that shows the comfort of human life. The road was built by humans, but its meant to be passed through, not rested upon. Its nothing.

The only good Backrooms game I've seen is the one I played on Dreams PS4. The horror comes from the disorientation and rising paranoia as the layout of the Backrooms changes while you're not looking, and you start to feel like you're being followed by friggin' tables and chairs. There are a few monsters that you can encounter, but the encounters are random and unlikely to happen, especially if you're trying to avoid them. And even if you _are_ chased by a monster, the one I saw was a floating bright red light, which, unlike the cliche monsters in these games, is still more than abstract enough for your mind to fill in the gaps with subconscious horrors. The game was made years ago, back when the Backrooms idea was just starting to get popular.
@SkeleTonHammer2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the backrooms is a lazy and not-scary idea based entirely on its ease of asset creation (literally 1 texture for the walls, floors, and ceiling, basic box geometry, etc.) so it's not surprising that there aren't any actual good ideas. The whole concept is like a cop-out so nobody has to actually be creative or put any work in, so that teenagers can all make the same rushed Unity games with the same "walk at you, touch you, game over" AI that lazy teenage game devs have become infamous for.

@edgerslayer2 жыл бұрын
@@ex_philemon I would argue you could feel nostalgic for something that has come to pass. Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines nostalgia as, "a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition." It doesn't specify that you need to experience that time period, but for the sake of this let's use wistful. I agree though that there are games that use the feel or look of the 90s (or whatever other time period honestly) in an almost click-baity sort of way. The Backrooms 1998 doesn't need to be in the late 90s to work. Like you said, it really adds nothing, so it needs not to be included. I have seen a comment here or there referencing that the story about the child actual relates to a real murder. From a gameplay and story standpoint, it doesn't add anything. Even if it isn't true, then it shouldn't be added to the game like a main story element. Anyway, I think you're almost spot-on with how the developer uses the 90s as a sort of stylistic crutch. I don't really get nostalgia from the 90s at all either. I was born 2000, so I don't really get it either. I'm sure there's something out there that might give a sense of wistfulness, but not really a sense of nostalgia.

the protagonist of 1998 sounds like walter white junior, also, these backrooms games are kinda way too linear for backrooms games. Mass Extinction was way better than the first two, even if the first one had kind of better graphics. I like the windows too.

@joel you absolutely would love the backrooms lost tape. it's the best of all the back rooms games

I don’t know why but for some reason I don’t like backrooms ‘98 Like, not in a “this is a bad game” kind of way, I just dislike the fact that it exists for reasons I can’t put my finger on

@James The twist is that the MC and their friends murdered the little kid who’s the monster in the game, in a way that parallels a real life child murder, it’s as bad as you’d expect

Man, that whole bit about Henry Kaiser made me actually physically ill to listen to, and I dont think it was because of the story about him being forced to eat puke. And joel, parodying him, still sounds better.

You may call me a shit gobbler but I kinda like Henry's music.
@spencerdurette28592 жыл бұрын
@@clausluger4570 as Joel said, music taste is subjective. You can enjoy it all you want. I, personally, hope I never hear it again or I’m gonna end up puking myself
