Varian better get redeemed! You did kinda leave out the part where Varian had to go into hiding due to the rumor of him attacking Rapunzel(which was false, he was only asking for help), it's both Rapunzel and Varian's fault for what happened to their Friendship. Since if Rapunzel had went to see Varian after the storm, apologized and explained herself Varian would've been more forgiving and willing to let her help. In the Alchemist returns, we do see Varian feel guilty about lying, manipulating Rapunzel, and stealing the flower, but I think after hearing Rapunzel say I promise and the door beginning to open his hurt and anger returns and he refuses. As for what happens in "Secret of the Sundrop", Varian is fully working off his hurt and anger towards Rapunzel and Corona. After seeing Rapunzel hugging her parents after his final attempt to free his dad he finally snaps and in hurt and anger attacks Rapunzel. I think Varian is just so blinded by hurt and anger that he's forgotten who he truly is and truly wants to be, I think once he's had time to cool down and clear his head he'll be much more willing to talk.(hopefully with Arianna since she did try to talk to him before) I think the main reason the writers decided to have Varian become a villian is because he's connected to the moonstone. I mean Varian's inventions and alchemy concoctions intentionally or not cause destruction, just like the rocks/moonstone. Varian's hair color is also black with a blue streak, just like Rapunzel's hair color turned in "Rapunzel and the Great Tree". Varian's personality is also the polar opposite of Rapunzel's. And since Adira plans to neutralize the moonstone that could mean a redemption arc for Varian. Also, some supporting evidence for Varian being connected to the moonstone, is his father was caught in the blast from the opal/moonstone, putting some of it's magic inside him and eventually passing it down to Varian himself. So Varian's powers wouldn't activate around the rocks but the moonstone itself. I really want Varian to appear in season 2, showing that he's been following Rapunzel(hopefully wanting to make amends and apologize) and he'll help Rapunzel neutralize the moonstone.

After how they wrote Rapunzel's character when facing one of her biggest challenges since leaving the tower and failing even after centering a actual episode on Varian, making it more about Rapunzel need of validation on what a good friend she could be and nothing really pertaining to Varian's actual state and how is "friends" could actually help him for once...it's clear that the writers have no grievances about throwing away a character for the sake of an ungrateful, entitled heroine. This is why I myself stopped watching this show.

That's not fair. His father clearly cares very deeply about Varian. I won't say he was never embarrassed or disappointed with his son because as a highly intellectual child his naivete gave him a leap without looking approach to things (especially with his inventions) that caused property damage so his dad was weary of those aspects of him, but in spite of that Varian's dad never mistreated him.

This boy... dear god, Varian is probably one of Disneys most tragic characters to date. And seriously well written! He’s not a villian just because, “reasons”. We get to SEE how and why, and the beforehands... we’re given a chance to adore this kiddo, which is why it is just so heart wrenching to watch his fall into villainy. I am seriously hoping for a well written and NOT rushed redemption arc for Varian. There HAS to be some hope for him!

You forgot one detail that pushed Varian into the path of evil, not only that Rapunzel refused to break her promise, that it's full prashing was: "Don't worry, Varian. I haven't forgotten our agreement. We're gonna figure out the mystery behind these rocks. Together. Just give me until my father returns. Everything is gonna be okay. I promise." But after he was dragged out of the castle after begging for help he was also blamed for attacking princess Rapunzel, which gave him the reputation of a criminal in the kingdom way before he even became one ("I've had to lie low. A funny thing, the people of Corona aren't too keen on guys who attack their princess") so when he said that *everyone* turned their backs on him in his time of need he didn't mean only Rapunzel, he means the guards that threw him away from the castle back to the horrible storm and to Nigel who told everyone he attacked Rapunzel and to Eugene and Cassandra for not checking up on him after the storm ended and to the king of Corona that caused the black rock problem in the first place and then tried to ignore it for the next 18 years while his people suffer AND to the people of Corona for villifying him and turning their backs in him because of a rumor.

Also Rapunzel was "the beloved lost princess" that returned. If the people of Corona heard that someone "attacked" their princess? I'm surprised they didn't try to find Varian with pitchforks and torches and chase him out of town. (But I assume Nigel or whoever spread the rumor didn't add that the "attacker" was a child and a friend to the princess. So add in a little propaganda to mess with this 14yr old to ruin his life.)

The very town that he grew up in for all his life with people he tried to help by giving heated water (and who knows what other inventions he tried in order to better the town). A town that watched this boy grow up and desert him too. If Varian ever got redeemed, he would need a new start far, far away. Like maybe as far as the Dark Kingdom, maybe further, or at least to where people haven't heard of him or "The dangerous Wizard".

And I could see him saying "I don't understand any of your science but I support you anyway!" Plus the Dark Kingdom at the moment is bare so that would give Varian plenty of room to trial and error his experiments without hurting anyone. (Like that's some good Realestate for an insanely low price) Maybe even get a whole country side to himself or whatever size he wants!!!

He still never apologized for going through Rapunzel's journal and punishing her friend (behind her back to! It was only luck that Rapunzel found Cass before she was sent away! "Oh hi sweetheart! What? Where's Cassandra? She probably went to get some knight training to become a royal guard...Yes! That's it") While King Edmond literally gave up his family and his kingdom and chose to stay behind. But as soon as he saw his son he didn't do the "over protective" shtick, he came to eugene with open arms and trusted him and his friends and even dismantled everything he stood for just for his son. (Not to say that Fredric is a bad king or father, I sympathize, but he's simply not the right person to handle Varian)

Varian is my favorite character and i feel soo bad for him. All he wanted was to save his father, Rapunzel previously promised to help him whenever he needed. But when he did asked for help nobody did. I also don't blame Rapunzel because she was in a tight position between helping her friend or either her kingdom from freezing to death. So i can't be mad at any of them, tho i still feel bad for the boy.

Varian at the start was so adorable, I couldn't help but fangirl squeal. To see his character development work in reverse of typical "I have flaws I can get better" to a series of unfortunate events (Haha that reference!) that distorted his view on the world and turned for the worse. Frankly, Rapunzel holds a lot of the blame for Varian mindset. Not because she broke her promise during QfaD (That was an impossible situation and she did her best), but because she never once bothered to correct people that Varian didn't attack her. That's a big reason why Varian is so deep in his "me against the whole world" mindset, since everyone in Corona treated him like a criminal before he ever did something. I mean what kind of shitty friend you have to be that you just *let* people slander and frame your friend? And one that you apperently feel really guilty about turning away.

The first words of description we ever get of Varian are "some say he's dangerous", and this is far from the last time we see him described as or viewed as a menace, even if indirectly. It is no surprise that this hurt child, who really only meant well, would end up leaning into and accepting the way people saw him. It's really messed up, I'm glad Varian got the happy ending he deserved, but god he had to go through hell to get there.

So, Rapunzel's wrongs: Refusing to help a friend in need because of many other people being in need, being slow in following-up on Varian's situation because of her own situation. Varian's wrongs: Turns his back on all of his friends without even trying to understand their situation. Cruelly backstabs Rapunzel. Mutates his loyal pet and friend against his will. Attacks Corona Kidnaps the Queen (the most innocent party in the Royal Family). Promises to attack Corona again even after his father is freed. Tortures Rapunzel so hard the King is afraid it will kill her. Then completely flies off the handle and tries to outright kill Rapunzel. So, given that Varian kidnapped Rapunzel's mom, tried to kill her other friends, tortured her and tried to kill her? No, by that point, she doesn't owe Varian squat. You don't owe someone who tortured you and outright tried to kill you. You just don't. Turning away from someone because of a greater emergency is ENTIRELY forgivable. Kidnapping, sequestering, torturing and trying to kill people is NOT. Varian's wrongs are not in the same galaxy of wrong compared to Rapunzel. Why are you trying to make them even remotely equal? They're not. She stopped owing him the moment he kidnapped her mom.

And notice, many villains did not had support around them when they were suffering and turning to evil, like Varian did not have anyone to talk about it (like close close friends or family member, I doubt that Rap, Cas and Eugene would be count as his best best friends (But I believe Varian believed they were his only friends so)). The aspect that bothers me more, is the reason of Rapunzel for not helped Varian after the Storm and waited a lot time to finally go to pay him a visit, leaving him alone and scorned, because to insult to injury, Varian ended falsely accused by Nigel for "attacked" Rapunzel, and the "kind" princess don't ever bothers in silences nor discredits this false rumor, despite to knows that Varian only was begging her for help, yet she don't tried anything with this. I said this because in "One angry princess", when Attila, one of her friends, was accused for apparently vandalized the business of Monty, she put an impressive effort and interest to clean his name, saving him barely from rots in a prison, but when Varian was in a similar situation, she simply ignored him and leaves him by his own. And after that Varian stole the flower, Rapunzel don't knows why he did this and refused to trusted in her. Don't misunderstand, i knows that Varian and Rapunzel could reconciled, but i still thinks that the princess was selfish with Varian and a bad friend, for be indifferent with him during this crisis for the alchemist.

Also, regarding the possibles reasons to that Rapunzel don't helped inmediately Varian after the storm, i was thinking in two theories: 1. To considers that Varian was accused for "attacked" Rapunzel, possibly the king Frederic was one of the first people in get this news from the wicked Nigel, and to considers his overprotective nature, the king could restricts Rapunzel of even get near from Varian out of fear that he could harms her. And even if Rapunzel tried to leaves clear that Varian don't attacked her, possibly the king was still skeptical and as Rapunzel don't put any charges, the king chose don't arrests Varian and simply forbidded Rapunzel to see him, explaining her decision of stays in her room lamenting herself in the end of "Queen for a day", than makes something to make up Varian for refused the help earlier, and also could explains why she don't tries to visits him during her art classes despite to feels herself bad for it, and finally she chose to visits after the nightmare and that Varian asks her for help, regardless if her father allows her or not. 2. It is possible that Rapunzel was ignoring and avoiding intentionally Varian out of fear or out of shame, as she could be embarassed for broke a promise and/or she was afraid of that Varian lashes her out if she visits him after the storm and to considers the naive personality of Rapunzel, she thinks innocently that if Varian needs her help, he should asks her, leaving him by his own for a long time, as Varian couldn't even be safe if he goes to the castle town, as to be accused from "attacked" their beloved princess, the people could even attack violently Varian, spoiling even the possibility of asks for help to others, and causing that he developed a notable grudge and trusts issues not only toward Rapunzel and the royal family, but also toward all the kingdom for this unfair treatment. And possibly Rapunzel don't tried to discredit this rumor for thinks naively that this wasn't a big deal, as Varian was only accused, but not arrested, making that the fool princess don't bothered in put an end this rumor. Nevertheless, whether her reasons were the number 1 or number 2, Rapunzel still took wrong decisions in each scenario, because in the case of the number 1, Rapunzel lacks the same determination like in "One angry princess" to defends Varian for a crime that he don't commited, and even she showed certain cowardly for allowed that her father leave Varian by his own without takes the initiative earlier to helps his friend, even if means disobeys the unfair order of the king. And in the case of the number 2, Rapunzel simply was a naive person that is incapable to understand the consequences of her actions, making her incapable to see the predicament of Varian, to considers his showed despair for help and failed to recognized the very negative implications of the false rumor to Varian. Meaning that in both scenarios, Rapunzel was a bad friend and partially responsible of the downfall of Varian. PS. I thinks that Rapunzel already knows about this rumor, even before of "Quest for Varian", as Nigel mentioned this rumor to Rapunzel in this episode, yet she don't shows any notable reaction of surprise nor shock to hears about this, implying that she already knows the rumor.

He’s only 14, his Dad was the only person he really had, and all he saw was Rapunzel break her promise and turn her back on him when he needed her the most. It’s not her fault obviously, the entire kingdom was in danger, but all Varian saw was a betrayal. I definitely think he could be redeemed though, if he takes the chance. I hope he returns to the show soon, he’s such an interesting character.

Though I’d like to say that yes Varian’s fall was of his fault as well as he choose to do those things and attack Rapunzel. But I would also like to point out that even after the storm no one even cared to check up on him. He told Rapunzel his town was destroyed and his dad was in danger. Varian was alone in that time no parents no one. Anyone would have gone crazy with the rage he had. If Rapunzel is shown as some super kind and wonderful character she really let everyone down by basically abandoning Varian. In the second season she completely forgot about him to. The only time he showed up was once in a vision depicted as evil. With rapunzel’s supposed kind natured personality I at least expected her to see Varian happy again with the statue, but she didn’t even bother all she cared about was her family and other friends. Rapunzel didn’t show any sign of being sorry or wanting to help him herself. She didn’t even go to the prison to ensure he was doing okay before she left. She never thinks of him at all in the time she’s gone and all she cares about is her own freedom and destiny. She got her happy ending in the end of season one and in season two got to explore and totally forgot and abandoned Varian just as Disney did. This was the whole reason became evil in the first place. Who’s the real villain?

Imagine if you were a young teenage boy and you couldn’t buy food or anything because everyone hates you for something that never happened. The king also ran him out of his home. Really king Fredrick is the true villain here. He’s irresponsible and is more concerned about looking good then doing problems.

Varian was wronged real bad. He was thrown into a deadly blizzard by the guards, they could have let him stay there but no. That and the fact that he was alone for months with no care. He’s called a kid in the series so it’s obvious he shouldn’t be taking care of himself. The world failed him. That doesn’t justify murder, but he isn’t the only one to blame.

Varian is one of the best Disney villains, more so than any of the main Disney Princess movies. His motivation stems from betrayal and guilt, from his own realization that his father was right all along. The true tragedy is, even if his father is released, there is no possible way he would ever be proud of the person his son has become.

I have been waiting for this video! Varian is such a complex character and I really enjoy him! I really didn't like how people didn't appreciate his ideas. I only watched some episodes (I don't mind spoilers) and he became my favorite character in the series the moment he appeared on screen 😍 What happened to him was very unfair and right down depressing. It's true that Rapunzel was busy and overwhelmed with her responsibilities. But it's a fact that Varian dropped Everything and didn't hesitate one second to help his friends the moment they needed him. It's only natural he would expect them to do the same for him... But no. And then, of course, he became vengeful. I can't say he isn't to blame for what he did after with all those attacks to Corona. But he had been so desperate, sad and scared and no one helped him that it's understandable he would be deeply troubled. Plus he is only a child... Children do irrational stuff when they are scared and lost. Lots of love to my boi Varian and I hope he gets a redemption arc. ❤ Also, props to Isaac for his awesome as heck video as usual. 💕

The kid was thrown into a blizzard and forgotten about in the aftermath. He was left alone for months, he probably went a little crazy, you can hardly blame him. He was definitely having a mental breakdown after not being able to save his father. The murder thing wasn’t cool, but the robot and kidnapping from his preceptive most likely seemed like the only way to be heard. He has to send a lantern to Rapunzel because he was being attacked, and considering the rumor he attacked her the guards wouldn’t let him see her directly. He didn’t have many options.

You forgot the key moment that truly pushed him over the edge. The fact that rapunzel keeps promising to help him but never keeps those promises. Not to mention she never goes to check on him after the storm. Repunzel had plenty of moments where she could have helped him but she doesn't. She always made time for the others but never varian. She never had time to help someone who truly needed her. She turned him into a villian in my opinion. She also allowed the people to believe that he attacked her during the storm when all he did was beg her for her help. He never attacked her. Yet not once does she correct any of them. Nor does she check on him. She only ever spoke to him when she needed something. Not once does she visit him just to visit. It's always because she needs something. She was absolutely horrible to varian. Always brushing him off until it was time for her to cash in another favor.

I must say that Varian hits home with me a bit too hard. I try and support my friends and family but each time I reach out to them for help (as they do with me) I get told to deal with it myself. This is the biggest reason I don't trust people in doing things and Varian is similar that no one would listen, try to understand and help him to create something that would make his father proud. Instead they turn their backs on him and leave him in the grip of darkness. No one wanted to help and I don't blame him for losing faith in other people. With all that though, he still has to answer for his mistakes. Everyone does.

It has been +9 months since it all ended BUT I DON'T CARE. This character is the most genius creation Disney has ever done. I'm going to explain why: - He is realistic. He sort of reminds us of the Enlightment period when science got a spotlight in Europe. -He fights at least a bit against Rapunzel's father and his "dictatorship" ways. Rapunzel does mention that he emprisioned a lot of his workers because of minor problems. - He shows that royalty is just a bunch of entitled people who like to oppress people and pretend they hear the population. (I LOVE his sarcastic tone when saying your highness). - He is a self made boy/man. He is arguably the strongest person in Corona after Rapunzel loses her powers. -He is the only one with a long lasting TRUE career. Ok Rapunzel may be a queen...but she is not exactly the most intelligent in Europe and has the brain and maturity to rule as a 5 years old. She has no true preparation in war, military, knowledge.... and she didn't get a good marriage. Way to go Varian!

I would love it if Varian managed to be redeemed. I was first introduced to Varian in the episode he went on the attack and I just fell in love with his character, I especially loved his self acknowledgement as the bad guy. The redemption of an antagonist is one of my favorite things to watch happen, there's something interesting about the bad guy playing hero that appeals to me

ugh this video is so good! it's making me want to rewatch the series again!! I never really paid too much attention on Varian's transformation. like, I didn't really connect the dots, but now that you've made a video on Varian and his character arc, I wanna go back and see how it all plays out! Varian is probably my favorite character in the series, and knowing more about him really helps me appreciate his character and story a whole lot more. I really hope they bring him back. as a writer, I appreciate just how much Varian as a character evolves from one of Rapunzel's friends and a sweet, gentle protagonist to the main antagonist.

Honestly Varian was my favorite. I loved the sweet and innocence and I loved it when he started to corrupt. I felt bad for him because I could connect with him on many levels and when he broke I couldn't help but see myself. I felt so sorry for him and hated watching him be taken down by the ones he thought he loved. I wish he had one honestly and helped his father. Rapunzel had abandoned him when he needed help even after the many many times he had helped her. No one hurts my little strawberry like that. I really want to see more from him. Maybe on future episodes he will come back and get the revenge on the ones who hurt him.
