Listening to this as a budding director, there are so many thought-provoking things these masters say just off-hand... like, using dialog as an element of behavior rather than a method of delivering information... Or, moving the camera not to decrease boredom, but to increase understanding... I love this. I've gotta go think about this for a while!
@amadeusmalonje69486 күн бұрын
On the issue of moving the camera, I feel like I see more movement from American directors than European directors. European directors don't seem to be afraid of keeping the camera still and moving it slowly.🤔
@thainesmith6 күн бұрын
I agree with Villeneuve and think he placates with dialogue too much. I think about the chief of police's groan inducing exposition dialogue in Blade Runner 2049 vs the last half hour of just pure imagery. Even the baseline test, which is a lot of dialogue is not necessarily exposition but it tells the audience so much. He is making big budget movies though and traditional wisdom says that mass appeal audiences need to be led by the hand.

Guadagnino is a huge step down for Villeneuve. Villeneuve is friends with Christopher Nolan
@gingerbread187 күн бұрын
@@1marcelo it doesn't matter about status and who they know in the industry, but the craft. They're both passionate about their projects and can put their visions to the screen. These guys' perspective on how dialogue should be used in films amazes me. Seeing these two talk with very dialogue-centric directors like Tarantino or David Fincher would be so interesting.
@ZebrinhahDesrosiers4 күн бұрын
I'm going to share my opinion based purely on vibes, i have very little to back me up here, but I feel like even though tarantino and fincher are very dialogue-centric, they use it to the same effect that guadagnino and villeneuve propose. The dialogue is much more in service of character than narrative, in a sense.

This video was truly such a pleasure. I love what Denis said about limitations…I feel that the best films were made when we didn’t have the free range of CG. His movies are so grounded despite what we’re seeing on the screen and their stylization, he said partially because he never puts the camera where the human eye wouldn’t be. I think about Alien, I think about the early days of ILM…movie magic. The ingenuity and creativity fueled by limitation…beautiful.

When Denis talks about having started in documentaries, I still remember when he participated in one of my favourite shows, La Course Destination Monde. It was a competition show for young filmmakers who had to make short documentaries in a different place every week. With the technology as it was in the late 1980s, that was actually a tricky thing to do! The year he was on, they had to travel through Europe and Asia. I was just a kid, but I still remember that his talent was evident. (He did win best movie for the season he was in.) So many amazing Quebec filmmakers and artists came out of that competition show.

I do have a slight preference for LG’s more dynamic yet intimate style and the topics he tends to explore, but I am always in awe at DV’s ability to go huge while keeping a character-focused core. I am kind of fascinated by DV’s take on dialogue, and how either because of it or despite it, he picked two stories (Arrival and Dune) that deal so heavily with the power of language and communication.
