Right? I just realized that, Why are they snubbing one of the best movies of the year? I am not listening anything about the movie on these awards 😮 I had one of the best experiences of my life watching that movie. I liked Chalamet's performance the most it was so controlled, believable, and layered at the same time. That guy has range. I thought I couldn't appreciate his acting more,but he really surpassed my expectations.

Listening to this as a budding director, there are so many thought-provoking things these masters say just off-hand... like, using dialog as an element of behavior rather than a method of delivering information... Or, moving the camera not to decrease boredom, but to increase understanding... I love this. I've gotta go think about this for a while!
@amadeusmalonje6948

On the issue of moving the camera, I feel like I see more movement from American directors than European directors. European directors don't seem to be afraid of keeping the camera still and moving it slowly.🤔
@thainesmith

I agree with Villeneuve and think he placates with dialogue too much. I think about the chief of police's groan inducing exposition dialogue in Blade Runner 2049 vs the last half hour of just pure imagery. Even the baseline test, which is a lot of dialogue is not necessarily exposition but it tells the audience so much. He is making big budget movies though and traditional wisdom says that mass appeal audiences need to be led by the hand.

@@1marcelo it doesn't matter about status and who they know in the industry, but the craft. They're both passionate about their projects and can put their visions to the screen. @@gingerbread18 I don't care who they know in the industry. Villeneuve made a double interview with Nolan that is millions of times better than this one because neither of them needs to self-promote like Guadagnino. Guadagnino is shallow, no substance, all PR

that part about dialogue when Denis said "i have failed" was quite intriguing to me because what I enjoy most about his films is the beautiful imagery as a result of camera being still and actor sitting in silence. imo I thought few lines of Chani's and even 1-2 of Paul's should have been delivered differently or not spoken at all

I'm going to share my opinion based purely on vibes, i have very little to back me up here, but I feel like even though tarantino and fincher are very dialogue-centric, they use it to the same effect that guadagnino and villeneuve propose. The dialogue is much more in service of character than narrative, in a sense.

This video was truly such a pleasure. I love what Denis said about limitations…I feel that the best films were made when we didn’t have the free range of CG. His movies are so grounded despite what we’re seeing on the screen and their stylization, he said partially because he never puts the camera where the human eye wouldn’t be. I think about Alien, I think about the early days of ILM…movie magic. The ingenuity and creativity fueled by limitation…beautiful.

I find most of these episodes to feel very artificial and arranged by publicist, but honestly, the admiration for the craft of filmmaking comes through. One of the few of this kind video that I watched all the way through because the conversation itself and the intellectual heft of the things that they’re talking about, and the history of filmmaking was very thought-provoking.

When Denis talks about having started in documentaries, I still remember when he participated in one of my favourite shows, La Course Destination Monde. It was a competition show for young filmmakers who had to make short documentaries in a different place every week. With the technology as it was in the late 1980s, that was actually a tricky thing to do! The year he was on, they had to travel through Europe and Asia. I was just a kid, but I still remember that his talent was evident. (He did win best movie for the season he was in.) So many amazing Quebec filmmakers and artists came out of that competition show.

Such a fantastic talk. I am not even surprised at how much I have learned because every movie by these two has been a masterfully crafted film. I do have a slight preference for LG’s more dynamic yet intimate style and the topics he tends to explore, but I am always in awe at DV’s ability to go huge while keeping a character-focused core. I am kind of fascinated by DV’s take on dialogue, and how either because of it or despite it, he picked two stories (Arrival and Dune) that deal so heavily with the power of language and communication.

After watching SUSPIRIA, Luca would be perfect to direct an adaptation of Heretics and Chaptherhouse from Dune in the future.

This was magnificent to hear. There is almost nothing worse than ‘Actors on actors’ but this was something else altogether. Bravo.

Dennis Villeneuve and Luca Guadagnino are two of the greatest directors of the last decade (2014-). I hope their own movies like Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune movies, Call by Your Name, Bones and All, Challengers and Queer are memorable for future generations. Can’t wait for Dune: Messiah, After The Hunt and the possible American Psycho remake with Austin Butler.
