I am in awe of Bradley as a director. He's always been a fabulous actor but the fact that A Star is Born was his first feature just blew me away. He made an extremely large movie so intimate. Agreed, just watched it and what a treat it was. Ridley's movies are some of the only one's left trying to depict things with a sense of realism and logic. I'm saddened by the fact that he doesn't likely have many movies left to make. I really think audiences today are too shallow and/or stupid to appreciate movies like this. There's almost no subtlety left in cinema - as in artistic taste. Take the original blade runner, for example. That movie wasn't neccessarily about expansive vistas of the future; It was about the little details that fleshed out the future. Save a few scenes in the beginning, most of the imaginative elements of that film took place in small and intimate settings, like Deckard's or the robot makers apartment; It was in the dinginess of a dirty, garbage-covered alley with futuristic vehicles flying overhead where you truly feel enmeshed in that world. Contrast this with the new blade runner and you'll see just how lacking in imagination it was. Nearly every single intimate setting was super bland, save a few neat tricks with lazers and such, but there's no real creativity there. Now look at Last Duel, where there was great production value embedded in the details of the environment they live in. I've always been fascinated with wondering what it would be like to live during those times. Thanks to this film, I think I have a better idea. Ridley has a knack of simply letting the story take place without cramming stuff down your throat.

Loved Ridley's comment on all the experience he gained shooting ads. I worked in agencies back then and he was the director I longed to work with. Then he did the Apple into/Big Brother ad and we stumbled into our tech agency the next day stunned and even more impressed. His sense of film has always been painterly, cinematic eye candy even w/gruesome subject matter. Visceral and wonderful.

The Last Duel is a great movie. A real re-enactment. Mr. Ridley Scott is one of the few directors with Mr. Spielberg to work on aspects of the story. It's a real challenge. Historical movies are very difficult to write and direct (I know something about that, I'm writing one). Even the smallest details are important and I love re-enacting the lives of people and events.

It's kinda crazy how Gaga has had basically a drama student level of acting experience yet she's turning in Oscar nominated leading lady performances opposite the likes of Al Pacino. We are taking it for granted because she makes it looks so easy but I'm very sure it's incredibly difficult and nerve wracking and it takes a good director to help her on the way.

Not because the of historical accuracy but because of how it was portrayed. Not sure why Mat Damon had to have such an excessive amount of air time.! Quite frankly suggesting the audience needed to be reminded that it was a man's world just added to the dimming of what could have been a fascinating retelling of the story of a strong woman.
