I've been following Varun for years, and he deserves way more recognition. This video feels like a personal reflection, where he connects the dots from the last few years in such a meaningful way. As a software developer with 6 years of experience, I can say everything he mentions here is pure gold. His insights align with Naval's quote: 'In the future, we won’t have long careers. We’ll work in small teams on short-term projects, where we’ll be highly accountable for the outcomes.'
@guncolony2 ай бұрын
I definitely agree that this is the trend in which things are going, but what about the projects that actually do require a large team to complete? Let's say the outcome is to create a safe self driving vehicle, requiring hundreds of employees. I doubt it's easy to equitably divide the outcome in such a setting. What if a team makes a bug in the code that will, in 5 years lead to a catastrophic car crash and destroy the company? In an outcome-based compensation system, you would need to withhold the team's salary for 5 years to see if the crash will happen!

I am a Senior Software Dev. I see a lot of people here saying that you can “replace a junior dev with ai”. That just is not true. It can be useful sure but it’s just a tool. It has helped me get more done but it’s not a replacement for a person. People have accountability, wider context. When you work on enterprise level systems you need to have so many more competencies than AI can offer. Also the BS in this video about not needing to understand data structures (etc) is a pretty L take. You need to understand when your AI results are wrong or does not work in your situation. Knowing that stuff is critical in a lot of situations. Again, your AI is not accountable for ensuring what you are building satisfies requirements. You (the dev) are. I am not an AI doomer but don’t get taken in. So many people saying things like “no coders in 5 years” are doing so because they have a vested interest in doing so.
@therealherbzy2 ай бұрын
I will say that the person in this video’s point, saying that things will be different in 20 years, is totally valid. AI has changed the game. But not as much as people lead you to believe. Devs are still critical and will be for the foreseeable future.
@davids70092 ай бұрын
How many data structures do you need to understand to build a website? None. Zero. Most of the code is black box and boiler plate at this point. It's to the point nowadays that they have sites that have been auto generating them for years, pre AI. It's not a huge leap to imagine creating another layer on the stack and abstracting the development process further. How often do you work at the byte level of code or in assembly? I'm guessing probably not very often because they've been abstracted already. You don't think about transistors and current unless you're an electrical engineer nowadays. I suspect what'll likely happen though is that most folks will wind up being some sort of 'AI Engineer' and spend most of their time trying to debug the AI and its output. They can add as much reasoning as they want into the system, it still doesn't take away from the core problems of generative AI such as hallucinations and manipulation by bad actors. These issues are hard baked in and can't be avoided due to issues like the long tail information distribution problem and code being mixed with plain text. Things the video author didn't mention. I see a WHOLE LOT of potential AI security jobs in the future. 😂 Oh man... They break so easily the thought of our critical infrastructure running them is terrifying.
@therealherbzy2 ай бұрын
@@davids7009 it really depends on the website. But basically what you are saying is that AI can be used for boilerplate stuff which is fair (to an extent) but enterprise solutions don’t have anywhere close to that level of simplicity.
@hu9gaeuhy8g92 ай бұрын
@@therealherbzy Yeah, and there are already no-code boilerplate solutions for stuff like websites even without AI. But I don't think anyone would call a squarespace user a programmer. LLM is good for generating boilerplate content but if you actually need to build something it's really not that useful. Even less so on the enterprise level where specs really matter.
@tejasxaiАй бұрын
Well, the video did not mention 'no coders in 5 years'. What he mentioned was that we will become 'managers' to fine-tune the results. Also, AI can be fed more and more data, and in the coming future, it's just going to get better-have a 'wider context' and more 'accountability.' Only ones who can forsee the coming future and adapt will thrive.

Currently working as a developer and I use AI on a daily basis to help me with code. I've actually used it a lot for a project I had to do at my job. I had to create a Windows service that would check an Azure Blob Storage for new files to take them and send them to the mapped printers. I was making it in C# which I worked with 5 years ago when I was in highschool, so not did I just forget a lot of syntax, libraries and stuff, but the whole platform evolved as well. So I decided to create it with an AI. I was able to do it in two days and it worked well, but I could see that if I just told the AI what I want, it wasn't able to do the whole thing and I don't think it will be able to do the whole thing at once in some time. Therefore I think that the actual part of coding - writing the code yourself, will be less and less common, but you'd still need "programmers" or whatever they'll be called in the future, that will prompt the AI and with their knowledge secure that the output is correct and everything works as it should. So I don't think we will loose developers, I just think they'll code less and focus more on the architecture.

Alright. Let me break it down, why you are wrong! Coding/programming isn't going away, there was a comic panel circulating around in which a person is arguing with another colleague about there will come a time when we won't have to write code, we will just have to provide the spec, details etc and it will do the thing on its, and that is exactly what programming is, now you just have made another level of abstraction. Current programming languages are called high level languages because they are abstracted away and we don't have to think in byte code or write tedious assembly code. If the current trajectory of ai assistants goes at automating tasks (I can guarantee for a fact, they will not be able to do problem solving and write end to end spec because the transformer architecture is not suited for this, autoregressive models are inherently bad for this.These models are not reasoning, it looks reasoning to us humans, but if you know how the architecture works, you realize it is bullshit ), we are only going to make better projects/more ambitious projects with less people, current research says otherwise about productivity with these tools though, you are actually losing time to debug their hallucinations than when you could have already written it yourself using some guide you found on medium or stackoverflow or hackernews. It's just completely stupid. It can't plan unless you hack a way like PhD prompting. Next, you talked about how AI is going to take away creatives jobs, has it though? 2 years in, we are seeing that everything just looks the same now and only cheap companies are using genai tools to make creatives. There's a very clear tell with AI generated crap that apparently nobody talks about, there was a research paper I read about it, it is about perspective, every AI generated image has distorted perspective. That's why you can't get a sense of scale for an AI generated image. Flux is a bit better but they all suffer the same. No serious company is actually using it to run ad creatives built using GenAI products, if they are, well they are a shit company looking for cost cutting. Yeah, sure if you have a very mundane creative to be used, sure, use GenAI but anything complex but it all just looks the same. On other note, this AI generated slug fest and has even corrupted google images search results, everything you search returns an AI generated slop. Yes, I do agree distribution is king. But, is it really going to be the defining thing for future products, I doubt that. Currently I do disagree with you. If somehow these GenAI tools are actually useful and make people more productive, we will see job losses but that has always been the case, people will move to other crafts. Also, currently there is a vast oversupply of software engineers because they all saw that you can make good money with this field leading to loss of talent in core engineering divisions. During College, I saw brilliant engineers making cool shit but by the 4th year, they were all doing coding because the pay was better. That's why you get fields like aerospace, embedded etc which are niche but pay through the roof in good companies because that talent is hard to come by. People should switch to other fields. SaaS/coding is not end all be all. We need more hardware engineers, embedded, systems etc. but they are all doing coding. Sad state of affairs.

I agree with you. I hate when people speak from a high horse, acting like they know everything, and then use it for self-promotion, as the youtuber did in the video. If he is correct and confident in his knowledge, there's no need to prove it at every turn. Also, as an AI engineer, I strongly disagree with the points in the video. The internet will soon be filled with low-quality AI generated code, which will create more work and jobs for engineers, not less. It’s a cyclical process, as is almost everything in the world. And yes, in 10, rather 20, or 30 years, we may reach AGI levels capable of testing programs, reasoning, generating real-world-like simulations, and fixing bugs in systems, evolving naturally it. But with our current systems, we're still quite far from that point.
@SystemCTRL2 ай бұрын
I do agree with some parts of what you are saying like how prompting is just another layer of abstraction but you saying it doesn't actually contribute to us being more productive is very wrong. Of course there are flaws and to make anything extensive you need to have development skills but it 100% improves productivity. Unit test creation is a breeze, identifying edge case bugs and commenting/documentation writing are just a few major time savings I have seen in real dev ops right now. Full replacement, I agree... no so fast. But for developers with experience this is a superpower especially when it is integrated into your IDE.
@guncolony2 ай бұрын
This video becomes much more correct when you consider much longer timespans. Overall the video is right that project management-like thinking will become more important in the future because more time writing software is spent designing code than writing it. Right now, I probably spend 30% of time designing and writing ideas into a discord channel and 70% writing software in the IDE (with AI tools to handle almost all of my boilerplate). That 30% percentage will continue to increase as the AI tools becomes better. I don't think the change towards "project management being the main skill for software engineers" will happen as fast as the video is proposing, but I think even a 10 year prediction is quite relevant for someone like a high schooler choosing a major, and the trends in the video definitely do have a chance to play out in a 10 year horizon The video also argues building a personal brand will become more important and I think this is also true but on an even longer-term trend than 10 years. Automation will eventually lead to UBI which will in turn lead to more and more people fully willing to work for free (without the relationship being exploitative in any way, because people do not NEED to work for you, they CHOOSE to). Money WILL NOT be the main factor in labor-intensive projects (read: most software projects, except those that need a lot of ads to survive) anymore, it will be reputation, producing a genuinely good product that people want to contribute to, and the ability to manage a such a large community of contributors. That would be a very positive development because as money is no longer required to get things done, it opens a lot of doors for philanthropy and for organizations to exist that simply focus on doing a good thing rather than worrying about profit. I would also bet on more and more content-creator-led projects in the future.

@@guncolony I dont get you argument that more people will want to work for free? Why? It will get worse. Unless someone makes AGI which is far far away for the technology we have. Content creator led project? That's because human brain have a bias for easier things as compared to things that are hard to do. This can effect the end outcome in a positive or a negative way because the person who seems interesting to students may not be capable enough to teach them all the things they require to for example pass a test. So only the teacher is being benefited and not his students which may end up in him losing his credibility in the long term. There are a lot of other factors too so just assuming that the teacher capturing the most attention right now is better and will always do good is incorrect. The IIT professor may not be getting a lot of views right now but in the long run he may or may not gain a lot of attention he never got.

The reminder to “fail forward” and use insights from real experiences is a valuable lesson for anyone trying to make it in today’s fast-paced environment. Summary: Young people often rely on tutorials and advice from supposed experts to guide their career choices. However, the most cutting-edge innovators are running experimental projects that defy categorization and are often rejected by the masses. 1. Real practitioners: i. Conduct strange experiments that few understand ii. Stay on top of new technologies that don't yet have mainstream jobs 2. The masses: Dismiss these experiments as unrelatable and don't understand their potential Examples: i. AI is predicted to take over creative jobs (2022) - downplayed by masses but now widely accepted ii. AI tools like Alpha CTR and auto code Pro can automate tasks and enhance capabilities iii. GPT-4 model excels in reasoning, boosting coding abilities Implications: 1. Shift in job skills: i. Coding as a manual process is likely to decline ii.Engineers will move into managerial roles iii.Focus on outcomes and revenue generation over inputs 2. Importance of distribution: i. Customers value convenience and accessibility ii. Content creators can leverage AI to build distribution and monetize their work Key Points: 1. Stop listening to the masses and run your own experiments. 2. Embrace responsibility for outcomes and become more like a manager. 3. Insights about what people want are crucial for success. 4. Failure is part of the learning process when testing new ideas and sharpening skills. 5. Chart your own path and focus on understanding what customers truly value.

But as senior, staff, Principal and above....we work very closely with the business departments and everything we do is tied to a specific business outcome. The concern that all engineers have is as AI matures, the number jobs for the so called "Manager of agents" will reduce as well, won't it? We all think that over the last few decades, Automation has not really reduced jobs, it has just redistributed them. But that is not entirely true. During that period, the gap between rich and poor has increased. That means that with AI, the gap will exponentially increase. Only the smartest developers will become managers and the rest will be out on the street. If that is the case, is AI really good for the economy?

@@ayushparmar110 To be honest, after seeing the pinned comment that this video could be AI generated. I didn't feel any emotions in it. So, the video was actually boring for me. I watched the full video for understanding his point. Also if you want to know the role of video editing concerning human emotions, just think of the moment when a youtuber becomes sad or happy when telling something. A comedy scene or editing appears when he is happy. And when he is sad, sad type of editing appears. Also making a video attractive enough for audiences to watch, had to be made by a human itself as it involves human psychology. According to me, for educational content with no/less human emotions, AI can be used. But for production of contents where a large mass is involved, human emotions are important. Most Channels with a large number of active subscribers are one such example of that type of content. Thank you for reading this far. In the end, I admit that I may be wrong. You are not just over optimistic but in a bubble tbh. You aren’t helping anybody, just discouraging many helpless folks from being mediocre in your eyes. But for them it’s satisfactory or even a milestone. For you if somebody’s work is automated they asap lose their value entirely, which might be true during Industrial Revolution but not anymore where a job has more dynamics at play than just a what is, repetitive and mundane work in your eyes. You are scaremongering people with AI when it’s just a tool for making them more productive and making them feel they should give up with this kind of rhetoric. You simply make videos talking X is irrelevant because AI can do X. Instead you should encourage people that AI can help them do X faster. And strive to do X better than what was the norm so far. People like you see any life improving tool like llms as a startup opportunity instead of as a tool for personal growth for the masses. There is so much nuance here and so much to agree and disagree. Putting things into 10 mins video or reels isn’t helping anybody. For going from 60 to 90, most such real practitioners moved from 0 to 60 with the masses and with the same roadmap. Edit: It’s an observation I have been having since the last few videos, like you ranking jobs etc. Yes your llm model may be much nicer than the average mern stack dev but a small subset of them might be really loving their domain, and a smaller subset of them might have the drive to do much better than any of us can imagine. Such rhetoric does more harm than good. I am one of those who would have been severely demotivated and depressed seeing such content in my early days but I’m in middle of things and optimistic that I would rise above the median and be exceptional, and even if I didn’t, I would love my work equally. There are so many things AI can’t accomplish when you are deep enough into STEM domains, but how would you know. Example www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-6.8-Networking For you coding is just opening an empty text file and writing some CRUD boilerplate and pitching it to investors and making money ie just a means to an end, but there is a lot of deep engineering work that goes on with codebases for existing battle tested production facing tools where every ounce of performance, security and maintainability matters. Scaling is another big problem. You can’t just solve these problems by prompting an llm but reach a stage where you can start solving these much faster by prompting an llm for the easier part. For people like you engineering is just another role of creating a purple website but little do you know the kinds of problems people are trying to solve and many of them made a website in their lives, imagine asking them at that point to stop and be a video editor and deprive them of the future opportunities that lie ahead.

In reality, technological progress is often gradual, and the impact on industries like software development will likely unfold over time. Developers, as you mentioned, are more than just code writers-they are problem solvers, and that skill will remain relevant even as technology advances. The nature of jobs, especially in tech, will likely evolve, but it’s not the apocalyptic scenario some predict. Instead, it could lead to shifts that create new roles and opportunities that we can’t fully foresee yet. Staying adaptable, honing skills, and approaching change with an open yet grounded mindset is key. We’ll collectively navigate these changes, and while AGI or massive shifts in energy may come one day, the path to get there will probably involve a lot of learning and adaptation along the way.

I'm a software engineer, and I have some concerns about what you're telling people here. First off, I wouldn't trust dubious internal data regarding devin or whatnot. And secondly, you're reducing the role of a software engineer to only their output. The coding aspect of it. While it is true that is the main role of a software engineer, it is not the only one. In addition to coding, software engineers are requirement gatherers, testers, system architects, and they MUST develop their features to be as maintainable as possible. Something that both o1-preview, and 4o lack immensely as even with the context of the codebase they create code with the idea of a single feature or prompt in mind, without adequate requirement gathering, performance analysis, or cohesion within an overall system. Now, I normally don't voice my opinion in comments but one thing you said really struck a tune. You're telling people wanting to get into software engineering to not focus on interviewing, dsa, or programming fundamentals and instead focus on the amourphous idea of 'management'. Not only is this completely incorrect, but to tell people to not do things that have been proven to help them get a job right now to gain experience in the field while not even in the industry is just an absurd thing to say and worse, robs them of hope. These things work, and to tell people not to do them and simply be unemployed for longer and do things that align with your idea of 'the future' is something that hurts your overall message. I also believe it's morally wrong.

@@VarunMayya That's not it at all. You're reducing the act of engineering to just building something, instead of building it to last. I think i am totally screwed now 😭 choosing a degree that totally depends on writing code and displaying the output and the college's don't understand and don't give us much time to experiment new things with all the exams,assignment and records.I don't understand what am i going to do with my future

That's kind of the point. The world is changing quick but we're still sticking to old traditions of degrees and skills, obviously when hearing something contrast that you'd feel confused. But I do believe the confusion will lead you on to the right path so keep at it

The section on "the power of independent thinking" hit home for me. I've been trying to pivot to tech for the last 2 years. But, I feel like I'm surrounded by "the masses" telling me to take the long road, while I'm internally screaming, "THINK BEYOND WHATS IN FRONT OF YOUR FEET". Thank you for this video....and shout out to all the independent critical thinkers! 🙏👍

>AI now outperforming 93% of programmers citation needed. AI will never outperform 93% of programmers. There is no metric to give such an estimation because programming is not a single unit. Its a vast collection of web, native x86 and arm, embedded micro processors, fpga and a lot more. AI solving some leetcode challenges does not make it outperform 93% of programmers because software development is very different from competitive programming. The most it'll do is assist and it is no where close to actually replacing programmers. What AI can replace are menial tasks like data entry jobs but they are not programming jobs. The transition will be similar to how demand for portrait painters went down as soon as cameras showed up. Please don't over hype AI just because it can get some shit done. It has yet to reach the stage of creating actually useful stuff and with OpenAI going for profit, its becoming more evident that AI has already hit the wall and won't be able to reach the stage of being actually useful anymore. Linux sex tips already showed the potential of deep fakes over 4 years ago by experimenting on his own content. Generating faces and audio are nothing new and it doesn't need critical thinking so that technology has only improved over time the past few years. It would have irrespective of the LLM hype. Distribution and customer insight are things for the wealthy people to worry about. If anyone is a nobody like me, I'd suggest them to prioritize their focus on the product itself. In fact, if they have a solid product, the task of distribution will become measly. Please don't worry about AI and focus on developing your skills, be it art or programming. AI can generate art but it does so at the cost of less creative and emotional control. You'll need a professional artist to get the job done if your requirements are not basic and simple. Same goes for software development and all other fields.

Yeah, I was wondering about this. A lot of the benchmarks that AI is tested on are dubious at best, like the HumanEval (if I remember correctly) benchmark in which a lot of the questions the AIs are prompted with are generally pretty simple and don't seem to demonstrate any actual programming or problem-solving expertise. I'm extremely curious to see where this 93% statistic came from since I watched the whole video and didn't see its source. I definitely could have missed it, though. So far when it comes to code, even with careful prompt engineering and the most sophisticated models, AI repeatedly falls flat upon trying to solve more complicated problems with some moving parts. Not to mention that from a cybersecurity standpoint, it writes a LOT of unsafe code, so if anything, hacking is probably a safe career choice assuming the most optimistic perspectives on AI. I've made extensive use of AI in my code, but so far, it has served as little more than an autocomplete and sometimes a code filler for blind spots in my knowledge. Nevertheless, I end up rewriting almost all of my AI code because it's usually inefficient, unsafe, too rigid, or all of the above. Maybe someday we'll truly only "code" in English with AI writing all of the actual code, but everything in my experience has left me unconvinced despite everyone telling me that I'm simply not prompting well enough.

@johnsteriman5949 yeah, the only thing I could think of is that all the big tech corporations are marketing AI as the next big thing and the consumers are buying it despite AI not being up to the mark. No need to get bat shit scared about it. AI can only spout code snippets and programming is a totally different thing. In video games(I'm a game dev), we have several subsystems to manage with along with synchronization and that is no easy task. For AI to provide a good solution to the problem, it'll have to process the entire application architecture from end to end along with all the possible edge cases, which is very highly unlikely to happen, at least with LLMs. I don't think we'll ever be able to "code" in English because there is a lot of linguistic ambiguity in our human language that leaves room for a lot of errors to occur. Ultimately, programming languages are just a tool to make the hardware respond as per the instructions in our code and each programming language solve this problem in its own way, by utilizing a garbage collector or not, by being either functional or dynamic or procedural or object oriented, all of which translate different assembly instructions for the operating system to process. The presence of so many abstractions makes it very hard for an AI to provide exactly what the user needs so we have no choice other than to write the instructions ourselves usually by using some high level language.

I agree. That fact that he says AI is 93% better than human programmer, but he doesnt know that its better in competitive programming where the answer of those questions is already somewhere online on which AI is trained on. Its so sad to see all the comments that says he opened their eyes and minds, while blindly following the guy whose main focus is to build content focused tools but that is not the only thing in the world. If AI was smart enough, then we will have multiple JS libraries that works better than react. It not going to replace shit.

I have a question if all the jobs are replaced by AI , so people become jobless, right or you can say everyone is enterpreneur ..So who are going to buy this AI shit if you don't have money or people buying power decrease ..So what the purpose here how the economy work if everyone is going to lose just to eradicate manpower..Companies lose becuase they don't have customer to buy their Ai shit , common person don't have jobs to buy that shit I just have that confusion...
