Sun reflections on clouds or satellites, asteroids maybe, aliens? What's your guess? EDIT: It's being awesome to read all your comments and observations. It's great to know there are many pilots here sharing their experiences. I have only observed other airplanes and a shooting star at FL390 once that I'll never forget. Hopefully I'll see one of these strange lights some time.

I've seen the same thing, twice. Once over Ohio and another time over the Gulf south of Louisiana. There were two or three, moving in coordination with each other it seemed. Fading in and out, getting very bright at times, and changing direction. They were a distance away but you could tell they were moving very fast. They were usually quite a bit higher, but at one point I saw it go below out altitude before fading out when we were out over the water.

I saw something about 15yrs ago, that will be in my memory; forever. It was at about 5000' AGL, moving at about 100kts. I don't what it was..but I know what it WASN'T. I was not an airplane, a helicopter, a balloon ,a bird, a kite, a satellite, or a drone. It made no sound, whatsoever; and as close as it was, and as large as it was; it should have. There was absolutely no wind, and it was about 10:00 AM. I wasn't drunk, high, tired or ill. I'm nearly 70, now; and I've never seen anything like it in my life, before or since. If it was "our" technology..we have NOTHING to worry about, from possible hostile actions by foreign adversaries. If it was technology of a China, Russia, N.Korea, etc..they would have conquered or destroyed us...LONG AGO.

Here's something to think about as you "wake up": Assuming intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, how did it know we were here, how did it get here and why has it not made itself known to us? Think what humans would do if we discovered intelligent life on another planet...we know that there is no other intelligent life indigenous to our solar system, and therefore if there *is* something "out there", to visit us from their own home is an undertaking of such vast proportions as to be incredibly unlikely. The odds would say that surely you're right - we're not alone. Yet the same odds would say that the chances that they've managed to find us and visit us are vanishingly small.

@@marklnz I would say, as in the Contact movie, where one of the characters asked the same question, and astrophysicist do talk about that question, that because we have been radiating man-made modulated signals for the last 60 years or so, it’s like our planet suddenly turned on a lightbulb. Also, if our rudimentary radio telescopes and space telescopes can help intimate planets around distant suns, civilizations 1000, 10,000 100,000 years more advanced than us would easily be able to find us.

@@banon7853 There are less than 700 stars that are within 60 light years of earth. All mark is saying is that the odds of intelligent life existing elsewhere is extremely high, but the odds that the lights we see in the sky are alien is very low. There are far more plausible answers.
@banon7853
@banon7853 10 ай бұрын
@@coolaidmedic5553 it feels implausible because of how little we know. We’ve only really known electromagnetic theory for about 100 years. We can’t use gravity like we can use electromagnetism - that’s why it seems hard. What if we had 1000 or 10,000 years to figure it out instead of 100. And what most people don’t realize is that only one of these sightings, since we started documenting and socializing them, needs to be true. only one.
@coolaidmedic5553
@coolaidmedic5553 10 ай бұрын
@@banon7853 That could also be said for stories of ghosts, bigfoot, and angels. What is more likely: the lights are caused by a manmade or natural phenomenon which we do not yet understand, or the lights are caused by an alien species that flies around earth undetectable and does not contact us, and has the technology to overcome several laws of the universe that we currently understand. We cant just jump to "oh its probably aliens" just because we dont understand.

Atleast some of these lights could be planets or stars. I checked from program called "Stellarium" that Saturn and Vega (birght star) are low on Winnipeg horizon at sunset. These can apear to be "strange lights". In any case, all observations of lights in the sky are interesting and should be investigated. When someone sees these lights they should first check from Google Sky Map or similar app if there is a known natural object in the direction of the light.

I've been flying commercially for bout 20 years. I've done a lot of flying at night. Up until recently, I never saw anything out there and chuckled at anyone who ever asked about UFOs. Twice in the past few months, I've seen lights (usually 3 to 4) "orbiting" in a circular pattern high up in the atmosphere with no anti-collision lights, first heading east talking to Houston center and most recently, westbound talking to Minneapolis. The first was over Texas heading east at around 4am central, the lights were moving in and out from each other, occasionally crossing paths rapidly changing direction. The range in our windscreen was maybe 11 to 1 o'clock and it appeared at the same vertical angle for about 45 minutes, so it wasn't anything in our atmosphere as the viewing angle would've changed at least a little over 450 miles while multiple objects are formation flying and changing direction. Our groundspeed was about 550kts. The second occurrence was an identical formation at nearly midnight. So have fun explaining that one with the sun's reflection. No other pilots mentioned anything on the radio for the first but a United queried Minneapolis on the second and the controller kept responding with something along the lines of, "no we're not painting anything on (weather) radar", but never addressing the lights.

I agree. While camping, in just about the same spot in the sky I've seen dancing lights. Going dim, appearing nearby, giving the illusion it's the same objects. I'm virtually certain it's intersecting satellite chains that reflect the sun for moments at just that small section of the sky. It's why all these pilot reports have them staying in the same section/ angles in the sky, coincidentally with the sun below the horizon in that direction. Pilots should familiarize themselves with satellite tracking apps that use phone accelerometers to point the right way. It's possible their speed and altitude make them less accurate though.

The most interesting thing to me, is the way the story/description changed each time it got relayed controller to controller, and lastly to the AAL. Not that they did anything specifically wrong as far as ATC, I would expect a bit more accuracy unless it were seen as so "crazy" that it was not given any credence. In the UFO phenomenon in general it may be easy to see how an initial sighting gets lost in the inability to describe beyond interpretation what actually occurred, making the number of crazy sightings water down the actual. Anyway I've never seen one that wasn't an airplane but I've seen airplanes that could have been thought to be a UFO by someone who had no external idea of what they do and especially look like with lights on approach especially around dusk. OTOH they are all UFOs until I determine that they are an airplane, right?

My brother and I have been seeing strange lights like this almost every morning around 0400 over Kansas City. Orange-ish colored lights that randomly appear and disappear, and some appear to be maneuvering. Most logical explanation is its satellites, but I've used various sources to try to locate satellites in the area and can't find any that correspond to what we're seeing. Additionally, I've seen a few that were moving north or south, then literally stop and start moving straight down or up without any brightness change. I've also seen a couple that were clearly turning as they moved. Satellites on different trajectories would both still be visible in those situations. We are west of KC seeing these, so the sun is not far below the horizon. I'm hard pressed to explain it with anything other than satellites, but it just doesn't fit.

It is quite common to see flashing lights in the night sky, especially before dawn. Once I was flying over Kazakhstan and saw how in one part of the sky, at an altitude of about 60 km, there was a bright flash of a star, then again, but in another part of the sky in the east. Then there were a lot of them and they began to blink chaotically and fly across the sky. At the end of the performance, one of them began to strobe and disappeared. Then they disappeared. I, the commander and the flight attendant saw it. This is definitely not Starlink and not of earthly origin

About 15 years ago one summer, I was sitting in the garden looking up and saw a small white object slowly zigzag side to side heading SW. It was a very regular zigzag and I initially thought it was a Seagull or a Swan, but then I realised it was much too high. I’m an amateur astronomer with a 10” reflector so I quickly set it up, but all I saw was a white blob, no wings, etc. After a good 5 minutes, it shot off directly West. I’m used to seeing satellites, and the space station, but this was way faster. From being directly overhead to vanishing to the East was under a second.

One particular night, we were gazing upwards when my friend said "look at those 2 sats one looks like its following the other" ... me and the other guy saw them.. and as we watched the lead "satellite" turned a SHARP 90° !!... the second one did the same also !!! I was on the beach at Myrtle Beach sc about 30-45 min after sunset. I had 3 pastel blue colored lights about 1/2 mile out at 2000 ft come on slowly in a triangle formation. There was no object(s) I could see making the lights. They then each in turn switched to a pastel orange then faded out. The sky was clear and lit up enough to have seen an object(s) and there were none. It was also not foggy or hazy enough to make a projection from land. If it matters, I too am a retired commercial and military pilot. Pretty versed at spotting and identifying objects in the sky. Myrtle Beach seems to be a hot spot of sorts for such phenomenon.

@@CharlieTheAstronaut The rebound could have looked like a 180 even if it wasn't. It's just a matter of perspective. Imagine the meteor entering the atmosphere right in front of you aiming at a point on the ground below your aircraft. This would draw a line from top to bottom. As it is then repelled upwards again at a slower speed but also at a much steeper angle (in relation to your viewpoint) this whole sequence could look like an object travelling at an almost contant velocity while quickly turning in the opposite direction.

@@omgsrsly@omgsrsly, I am not sure you fully grasp what they mean by "bouncing off of the atmosphere". We are talking extremely shallow angles at extremely high altitudes and speeds, but at those distances that would not be the kind of speed they mentioned. I was in a relative's home, and on the night, I decided to walk up to the roof to watch the stars and maybe see some planes pass by (they live by a major cargo airport in my country), when all out of sudden this flashing red or orange strobe light comes into my vision, going from East to West; it was travelling extraordinarly fast, and just like how this flight crew reported, it suddenly did a complete 180° turn in a dime, before it returned from where it came from and disappearing in the horizon. I never knew what that was, I'm not saying it's UFO or aliens, but it definitely wasn't a plane, even my much younger self then could tell it was physically impossible for a plane to make a turn like that. we need to realize they are NOT BLINKING. if one can move VERY fast away from you and then towards you, you will perceive it as blinking but what is actually happening is that the 'object' is moving away so fast that it dims out. then when it comes towards you its light gets brighter. if they are observant, they might be able to see the color shift when the object is going away from them fast versus coming at them fast. that 'red and blue' shift is the Doppler effect.
