Great review, love the family participation! I like the format (rules and walkthrough then play). Trying to pick a big box co-op and comparing Drunagor to Gloomhaven. Very helpful.

Decided to back on gamefound before your review was posted. Some of your comments made me feel like the game still needs work (taking up too much table space, generic story). However, am still glad I backed it as since it provides a true solo experience. Some of these campaign games are difficult to convince people to make it to the table. There's seems to be a lot of functionality here. I just hope that they apply some of your revisions to the new expansion. This has the potential to be something really timeless.

Thanks for the review! I'm not sure how accurate your assessment of the doors is, however. They're not even remotely gimmick-y, they're thoroughly functional and frankly indispensable to any good dungeon crawler. But otherwise, I really enjoyed your review!

This game is so much dang fun on the character level. I've never played another game where I feel more like a bad-ass martial arts superhero, straight out of a '90s Hong Kong wuxia pian / flying swordsman movie. I also love that there is no LOS - if it's on the board, you can see it and target it. This game gets rid of a lot of tedium found in other DC games. However, it's also severely lacking in enemy variety.

It wasn’t just an 8. Violet gave it a 9 and Ruby gave it an 8.5. He averages all the scores.

Its not averaged based on a Q&A with Tom. He said if someone gave a game a 9 and the others are 7 below, it will still get a seal of excellence based on that one 9 rating.

We liked it a lot at first, too. But after playing four chapters, even with the QR code "darkness" mode, it was too easy. Maybe this is better suited as a "family game", than for core gamers.

Agreed that the 3D terrain is more gimmick than anything. IDW games handles different heights with colored borders and it works well and adds no additional components to store. The longer I've been in this hobby the more I value shelf/storage space. I don't think 3D terrain juice is worth the squeeze 99% of the time. And things like an entire tray w/ lid just for the darkness just strikes me as wasted space. The character progression seems awesome in this game though and its best feature. I was put off by HOW MUCH there is (definitely jumped on the KS-miniature-overbloat-hype-train) and also heard more than once that the story itself is lackluster and generic at best. In a game that's basically 40+hours of STORY, I want it to at least be "good" if not great. Otherwise, I'd rather play a really refined skirmish game. I heard much better things about Stormsunder's story, so decided to try that for this long narrative-focused genre.

Should check out Descent Legends of the Dark for a miniatures game. The app does 90% of the "ruling". You basically only need the playing card sized "cheat sheet"

Looks too fiddly to me. I was also put off that they are charging a $35 add-on if you want player boards that hold your character sheet and abilities etc. That should've been part of the game in the first place. Selling something to make your fiddly game less fiddly as a separate add on is crap.

@@TheDungeonDive no, not at all. It just feels like a whole plethora of the ones I see on KS that seem to have exploded on the market after Gloomhaven, is all. And this definitely felt like one of the pack when it was being described. I have absolutely no issue with dungeon crawlers, even if I don't want that many myself. I have personally found the DM-based style more interesting, but I also recognize that they are harder for groups to get to the table because not every group has someone interested in being the DM role.

@@r.l.jeffries1091 I am happy they aren't part of the game. I backed the core game and the expansion, but I will not buy the extra bling bling stuff. I personally think the trays look absolutely horrendous and I don't mind putting the cubes on the cards. The tokes for status effects are very fiddly, but that's the only thing that was too fiddly for me.

I have some news to you. Gloomhaven wasn't the first dungeoncrawler out there. Stop trying to compare everything to this ludicrous overrated game.
