The guy playing in the left Pt Shashank Subramanyam was a child prodigy and now a legend. He is self taught flute(venu) player. Later he learnt music from legend Dr Palghat K.V. Narayanaswami (Carnatic vocalist) and legend Pt Jasraj(Hindustani clasical Vocalist). He applied those learning on his flute and developed his style and he is now legend in his own right and unique flute player. Just to add some facts he got a scholarship at the age of 4 years which was meant for 14 years old students. He started performing on stage at the age of 6....

The raga Hamsadhwani in which this Song is composed (dedicated to Lord Ganesh), is a derived scale from The parent raga Shankharabharanam (equivalent to the western Major scale). You can try singing this raga by yourself by omitting the 4th and 6th note from the Major scale. Just do basic patterns using the notes on a piano and you can produce a similar effect to Hamsadhwani when it's actually sung with gamakas.

In flute, the scales shall be changed with the intensity you blow it. The amazing thing Shri Subramnyam ji done here is changing those scales without breaking the breath and without making us feel he is changing his blowing intensity with no much action from fingers (he shifted two scales) is legendary.

Although i understand that these are review videos it would still be great to the see the video being played in a more larger screen space where on can clearly see the video too along with your reactions. Just an input. I have seen hundreds of your videos and i have to always readjust my screen to zoom in the video while watching your reviews. Thanks.

Generally in Indian music, all the instruments, including the drums are tuned to the same pitch - usually that of the singer's voice or of the main solo instrument, when there is no vocalist. Sliding notes are THE hallmark of Carnatic music, check out the 22 notes in Indian music, if you have not already. There is a sudden spurt of videos on the subject on KZbin. And oh, the singer's pitch is relative : it is the pitch at which they can cover maximum range over multiple octaves.

Actually you are reacting to, mostly last part of any Indian classical music. As Kaushiki Chakravarti told you in her interview, it is only last part that is just 5/10 % of any Indian classical concert. The earlier part which is 80 to 90 % is real spiritual & creativity in the given framework of Raga & tala(Rhythm). Of course you require deeper understanding of Indian Music to appreciate the beauty of it.

The problem is that all the crapy music in the world is famous but the most complex, comprehensive, most artistic and most soulful divine musical form that is the CLASSICAL INDIAN MUSIC is not famous or known to the 90% of the world. At least we Indians have that luxury but very few of our classical artists are either famous (like Zakir Hussain, he is great but there are many Tabla maestros like him who are even better but no half as famous) or are rich.

Your sexual innuendos are disconcerting and out of place, especially with this piece. I know you guys worship Ustad Zakir Hussein and rightfully so as probably one of the greatest tabla player, but your comment comes across as using him as a barometer, when you comment on other great stalwarts. Carnatic music unlike Hindustani music is pretty much composed, sung, played in praise of the Lord, while Hindustani music developed under the patronage of Mughal kings was for human enjoyment. The SI musicians revere the music and are very humble in expressing theirs as a gift. Please understand thus difference and be respectful
@vivekp10853 жыл бұрын
So what
@dushyantsinghrahine25213 жыл бұрын
Hindustani music didn't develop under the Mughal patronage, it was in the kothas of tawaifs during and after the decline of the Mughal central rule that the non-devotional dimensions of Hindustani Classical Music flourished. And we do a great dis-service to the great women artists who preserved and developed the artform...

@@dushyantsinghrahine2521 was not aware, thanks for correcting me and the info
@dushyantsinghrahine25213 жыл бұрын
@@subramanyandakshinamoorthy2477 No prob buddy. In fact it's not just Hindustani, even Carnatic had a great tradition of women 'courtesans' (actually Devdasis) who enriched the genre. In fact, some of the first artists to have recorded their voices on gramophone in India were mostly women, Gauhar Jaan of Calcutta, was the first one, Manada Sundari dasi, Zohra bai Agrewali, Banglore Nagarthnamma, Dhanakoti of Kanchipuram, just to name a few. Also, when people cite Tansen as an example of Mughal patronage to Shastriya Sangeet, they forget that Tansen lived majority of his live under the patronage of Maharaja Rewa, Madhya Pradesh (my home state, btw). It was only due to his immense fame that Akbar ever invited him to his court. Swami Haridas, a great Bhakti saint and musician was his guru who was also in contact with Purandaradasa, both Krishna bhaktas, one from North of the Vindhyas, other from South of the Vindhyas. So, medieval Shastriya Sangeet had its inspiration from the Bhakti tradition, which later on was mostly pushed towards the confines of kothas in Northern India due to invading elites who didn't appreciate it much... Pranaam.
@gauravmitra80913 жыл бұрын
Hindustani or North indian classical is not for human enjoyment, rather highly spiritual, more than the South indian style. Only light classicals maybe put into that category, but not the actual Classical raga representations such as Khayal or Dhrupad.

Absolutely wrong hindustani music is not influenced by persian music ,hindustani has dhrupad ,khayal ,thappa thumri ,haveli etc ,only khayal and semi classical thappa thumri can be said to be little influenced by them not dhrupad and haveli sangeet ,correct me if m wrong
