I did not get this concept from my Guruji but I am into film music and light music as well, so in that way I understood these. It is impossible to sing from the chest after a particular note. The sound automatically comes from the head. The support always comes from the diaphragm though. This is my understanding on the concept.

Many years ago the great late Panditji sang concert in Amsterdam, Tropen museum. It was magical, divine, i was spell bound, tears streaming down my cheeks most of the concert, which ended with a Durga bhajan. After, i quickly went back stage wanting to catch a glimpse and thank him, i expected many people but there I was with him alone for a few brief moments that seemed like eternity. looking into my eyes, he seemed transported in to a state of complete abandonment, surrender. He then completely unexpectecly fell into my arms, hugging me tightly, crying, while continuing to chant the mantra of Durga Ma. He had given everything , I will never forget it, the love and gratitude I feld that evening. Such a great blessing had befallen on me.

Whatever he did is indeed diaphragmatic, cutting of breath like that how Rick expected is not at all allowed in Hindustani Classical music. If you go out of breath anyway then you can stop for a few note, (don't even try to sing those particular notes with less breath in distorted way) take full breath then again start singing from the next notes. So all the cycles he did were in a single breath. Also the vibratos he did wouldn't have been this beautiful if had been done with taking breaths in between. ❤️

It is diaphragmatic, with a perfect appogio, but not a cutting of the breath. With the right appogio, you have to modulate your pharyngeal space so as to adjust the air flow, to bring that taan. The airflow as in, the Crescendo and decrescendo done at such an insane speed is what gives that taan. You have seen Kowshiki Ji's practice videos, so the same and similar stuff when done in 5 vowels is what helps us achieve that. 5 vowels and 6 speeds to be precise about our practice. Do give it a try if you want to, maybe you too can achieve it with years of practice.

Many years back, I had the privilege of listening to Panditji in an open-air auditorium in Mumbai. He had become old and had to be carried on stage, but his voice was the same. It was a chilly January evening and the audience was shivering, covering themselves with shawls and pullovers. Then, Panditji started singing. And gradually within a matter of about 10 min, the temperature in the air changed!! It became warm and the audience started taking off their shawls. And the temp remained that way even half hour after his performance! It was incredible! I experienced this live! Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (pronounced Pun-dit Bheemsane Joe-shee) belonged to that category of classical musicians who devoted their lives to the craft, practising nearly 16 hours a day. You can't sing like this without putting in that kind of effort, and of course without the Grace of the Almighty. Those who listen to him experience God. Period. Thank you for your video :)

What he is singing is called Miya Ki Malhar. Malhar is associated with torrential rains. There are various varieties of Malhar. Miya Ki Malhar is one of them. According to legend, Malhar is so powerful that when sung, it can induce rainfall.. The complexity of those Taans & sticking to the Malhar Rag framework & Tempo of Tabla comes with years of Riyaz. (Practice). If you listen carefully you will get the feeling of torrential Rain while listening. The people were listening to him calmly because they were in trance with his singing. If you really understand Raag Music well, you will be calm & concentrating towards listening. Nothing else. That's why you will find people without any reaction. Occasionally when the singer lands perfectly at correct tempo after taking various complex Tan combinations within Raag Framework, they will just nod at the moment. That's it. Listening & appreciating Indian Music also requires some understanding (training) in Raag.

The taans come from the throat. Your Vocal chords need to be that developed and that happens with only one thing. Practice. Endless and thousands of hours of practice.
@arundhatiroy77993 жыл бұрын
Not exactly vocal chords, because singing all of it using only vocal chord muscles would create an immense pressure on the voice and the taan would sound very forced and unpleasant too in that way. Mostly breath modulations along with a little manipulation of vocal chords make these taans sound right.

It used to rain when he sang raag Malhar. He had siddhi in it. Not many know it.
@arundhatiroy77993 жыл бұрын
Is it so? I have always had this feeling that he must have been able to make that happen. Whenever I listen to this clip, every single time I feel like it's raining. It really made me wonder what would have happened during the live performance. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was the last of the maestros who had siddhi in some raag. No doubt about it.

You love classical music so much, you NEED TO WATCH the Amazon series Bandish Bandits. Don't go by the trailer, it's a brilliant and beloved show perfectly taking you through the process of classical music. It has Naseeruddin Shah in it too. That should be your next watch. You've only scene crime thrillers/ dramas till now.

The way he was singing it was "Taan" in hindustani classical music which they form with several note in accending and decending Order to remain in raga or mode in western music fast eg. More than 180 bpm. not the vibrato. It takes life to master of it. And the way he sang will take 3 life cycles of practice
