I mean, not succumbing to groupthink is a good thing. This phenomenon you're complaining about wouldn't be a thing if 70% of the population wasn't religious. Bad ideas that have the most power are socially legitimized. The obnoxious atheist thing is more about delegitimizing a bad culture, not necessarily showcasing superiority. Similarly to Vaush, yes the ideas are simple--if you're familiar with them. His objective is about proliferating his ideas to a broader audience, not showcasing the nuances that necessitates an advanced degree to visualize.

Stupid, but normal for a 17 year old to believe it. Rittenhouse's moral intent was to prevent violence and he was protecting the businesses of Indian immigrants. He was working in town as a lifeguard and his dad and other relatives live there. He was staying with a friend. He lived in a town of about 14,000. Kenosha is the nearest "big city", of about 100K. This is also just, not at all what sophistry is. If anything, what Vaush is claiming Destiny is doing is way more akin to what Socrates does. Socrates would argue points that he didn’t agree with to show how inept his opponents were and how incapable they were at defeating well thought out arguments. Many sophists, such as Protagoras, actually believed what they were saying.

@CrestOfArtorias
@CrestOfArtorias Жыл бұрын
Destiny argues the other side to understand their position, which leads to a better understanding. Which means he can better evaluate whether or not his opponent might be closer to the truth. And since Destiny only cares about being correct aka representing the truth as best as possible, this is a long way from sophistry. Ironically, Vaush by his own admission is a sophist, because he doesnt care about truth just about winning the argument, which is not one and the same.
@ParoTheUnderstander
@ParoTheUnderstander Жыл бұрын
@@CrestOfArtorias I may be incorrect but I thought sophists believed what they were saying, they were just incapable of defending their points soundly? My primary exposure to sophistry is through Platos dialogues, and most of the sophists seemed good faith, just incapable of comprehending their own positions.
@CrestOfArtorias
@CrestOfArtorias Жыл бұрын
@@ParoTheUnderstander A person engaging in sophistry does so with the intention of deceiving the other and usually without a solid understanding of their position or intention to engage in good faith. In short, they are a liar. And Vaush stated he doesnt care about lying as long as that results in his side winning. Which is by definition pure sophistry. He will attempt to rationalize this with an argument at times but that usually doesnt go beyond "me good, you bad thus me lying is actually good, cause you bad". Most people that engage with Socrates and Plato in Plato's writing havent thought their positions through and while you do have a couple who result to sophistry when they realize they can no longer engage with Platos/Socrates and still hold on to their position, they arent outright sophists.

As a centrist, I think Destiny is worth listening to because he certainly goes that extra mile to be rhetorically and ethically consistent and he's very well grounded in facts, but he's anything but fair and that stands to reason because he's openly admitted that his express purpose is to draw in more voters for the democratic party. He gives far left woke progressives a hard time to draw in moderates, not because he actually has a problem with them. His criticism of the woke left amounts to "it's cringe" which isn't real criticism, is it? At the end of the day, there is no world where he recommends any republican over any democrat at any level of government and there is an inherent unfairness in this.

If anything, accusing someone of playing devil's advocate is sophistry, ie instead of directly addressing the argument you go after the reasons someone is making it.
@Oyster--
@Oyster-- Жыл бұрын
Of course Vaush is going to denigrate playing devil's advocate. Devil's advocate is basically indirect steel-manning and Vaush is disinterested in actually holding a position that can beat a steel-manned opposition; in fact, he's much more keen on straw-manning for the appearance of a victory, as he's said himself. Which makes it incredibly stupid of him to say that Destiny is causing problems for debate when what Vaush does is actually harmful to honest discourse.

Why do you guys just call everyone you don’t like a Nazi!??’ Lmao. Subreddit brought the video receipts of his exact listed definition of a Nazi (which he stated in 3 separate videos) and then when other multiple videos demonstrated that Nick met these standards, he just banned the poster and said ‘You can’t call me out for takes I had 3 years ago’, which is pretty funny considering Destiny cited takes Vaush had in HIGH SCHOOL in his manifesto lmaoooooo

Can confirm destiny's hunch. Watched Destiny back in the sc2 days, but hadn't heard about him for years. I occasionally dipped into the politics side of youtube and while I was never a regular viewer I would occasionally watch some of Vaush's bigger videos. Heard him mention Destiny and just assumed it was true for like a full year before I got recommended a Destiny video. Watched a few and say Vaush was pretty blatantly mischaracterising a lot of Destiny's position.

To me, it seems like Vaush has plateaued when it comes to his intellectual capacity. Instead of seeing him grow, we've just seen him dig his heels into thinking that he's right about everything and has everything figured out--and even when you take this as a joke (which it could be), it's evidently not, when all of his arguments are bad faith and his only interest is in hyperbole. Instead of embracing the Western value of communally seeking the truth, Vaush is only interested in trying to humiliate the people he debates with, and in the end all that this has done is just make him look incredibly weak, and now it's just embarrassing when he tries to debate people who you really want to see get put in their place, because he's doing nothing for the good guys. He's got a great sense of humor and a good sense of justice, but I just don't enjoy listening to him any more. By contrast, when Destiny speaks with people, it feels like he's really listening, and he asks clarifying questions and tries to get to the core of the issue--and as a listener, I find that so much more engaging. When Vaush debates people, he doesn't listen to anything they're saying and constantly tries to mischaracterize them and attack their character. It makes for a really uninteresting viewer experience and gets us nowhere. I feel like if Andrew, that one guy--you know who I'm talking about--addicted to excuses and cigarettes--were to bring the argument that he brought to Vaush to Destiny, that Destiny would actually have been able to dismantle him. I don't think he would even bother to bring those points to Destiny, because he knows he would get owned. Instead, I got to hear Vaush flounder for two and a half hours trying to score a point on the guy, and it just made him seem more reasonable.

It's so obvious to anyone with a brain and who isn't knee deep in streamer brain rot that Vaush was joking, even without going back 30s lol. Source: I haven't seen Vaush content in ages, and only watch Destiny once every 6 months when I'm bored. Destiny has his fair share of blind spots, and it's kinda sad how he probably doesn't even realize that he's deflecting by stipulating what kind of apologies would need to be supplied him before he considers building bridges again, when he is guilty of the very same behaviour he wants apologies for. He does that kind of joke all the time about others as far as I can tell, even just from the limited stuff I've watched during my current Destiny cycle. Even the thing about Vaush's audience's proclivities applies to himself and his own audience, judging from the comments here at least. If these manbabies could just chill for a second they could stop injecting themselves into each other's brains in a really convoluted and stupid game of "he started it" but I guess you're at a unique disadvantage if you do this for a living
