I'm a farmer, an ecological farmer at that and this conspirac is ridiculous IMO. The thing that causes trouble for us is the same as for everyone else, increasing costs on essential items such as fuel and electricity. In regards to artificial fertilizers, we don't use then, but that's not a viable prescription for anything but a small number or specialized farms. There are ways to reduce the dependency on artific fertilization in conventional farming as well, mostly by utilizing livestock more intelligently, but stopping its use entirely would be disastrous. Modern farming does have an issue in that prolonged growing of only grains or only vegetables supported by massive additions of artificial fertilizers and herbicides/pesticides does reduce yield over time and in some areas the soil has almost become barren. Grain and vegetables needs to be cycled by grassland growth and grazing animals to retain soil viability. This is why the notion that we should entirely stop keeping livestock ludicrous. This said, the conspiracy makes no sense; the kind of changes I'm talking about are happening, farms like mine are the "cutting edge" of developing these altered methods of sustainable farming and it has nothing to do with some globalist elite taking over. Also, Vaush's characterization of farmers is very US centric. Globally, farms are still on average family business. In northern Europe, where I operate, the average farm has no employees and about 400 acres of land, which is about what I have. I work about 2800 hours a year and make about $25k. Yes, on paper a farmer has a lot of wealth because land costs alot of money, but the return on that invested capital is minimal and very few people are farmers unless it's something they really really want to do. I'd make more by selling my farm and buying stock, but if everyone did, there would be no food and no life outside of cities.

For those who don't know the inventor of artificial fertilizer was Dr Fritz Haber. His idea was later industrialized to scale by Carl Bosch, which is why the process is often called the Haber-Bosch process. Haber however demonstrated this process in 1909, which was around 5 years before wwi. It is also true that Haber worked for the German army in wwi, mainly as a military chemist making chemical weapons for the soldiers. He also had a few of the factories that were making fertilizer make explosives, which can be done because Ammonium nitrate can be a powerful explosive. His chemicals undoubtedly were also used in WWII by the nazis. But to say that he was a nazi, that's unlikely. The dude was jewish, and a really close friend with Albert Einstein, even having sleepovers with him on occasion. So saying that this process is a product of Hitler's Germany is just wrong.

A lot of people spout nonsense about GMOs but the fundemental health concern is breeding crops to be ultra-resistant to particular, overused, PROBABLY carcinogenic herbicides like Glyphosate. GMOs are good and herbicides are good but the movements about awareness and accountability for their widescale use are not fundementally rooted in the woo-woo nonsense you OFTEN unfortunately hear from anti-GMO people. Big ag and herbicide manufacturers have spent a lot of money to make this issue go away, but they also benefit heavily from the conversation being focused on anti-GMO people who don't know what they're talking about. I'm not suggesting a conspiracy there but there is some widespread strawmanning of the movement for accountability and transparency on these practices and their true health effects.

I'm so disappointed in where Brand has ended up. Once upon a time when he was a TV personality and controversial comedian he was pretty funny. Then years later when he really started talking about politics on his KZbin channel he seemed honest and to have good ideas. I met Russel back in 2014. I was messed up and in rehab after coming off heroin and methadone, and Russell came to the rehab. It seemed like he actually cared at the time, and was there doing things to actually help people. He didn't have any cameras watching him or anything, and at the time he had given jobs to other recovering addicts. I didn't hang about at the rehab, but was happy to meet Brand, everyone was really. I know he dismisses talk that he's right wing now, but that's just more infuriating tbh, like he's insulting everyone's intelligence. Yes he hasn't come out as a Conservative, but his content is nicely tailored to right wing conspiracy type people. He seems no different to Jimmy Dore now really.

Indeed, I'm Dutch too and the Dutch farmers are protesting because they refuse to reduce the amount of ammonia they release into the environment. The amount of ammonia and other nitrogen compounds released into the environment has to be reduced by order of the highest Dutch court because the nitrogen pollution is destroying Dutch nature and wild life reserves. Dutch farmers practice the most intensive and technological agriculture in the world and the Netherlands are the second largest exporter of agricultural produce after the US while the Netherlands are a tiny country with an area 1/237th that of the US. The protests and farmers action committees that organize the protests are heavily sponsored by this agricultural industry. To make a long story short: Russel is supporting farmers that are polluting the environment to such an extent that it's destroying nature. These aren't small farmers either, some of them run so called "mega barns" with hundreds of thousands of chickens, tens of thousands of pigs, or thousands of cows under a single roof. IOW they're exactly the kind of farms Russel says he doesn't want.

As someone who lives as an expat in the Netherlands, it is so wild to see how much this topic has been picked up by international media. Please never forget how many of these farmers are using rhetoric like "they are taking our land to give it to ukrainian refugees" or call the conservative prime minister a communist for allowing the country to get closer to current climate goals. It is crazy to me that Russell and Vandana want to paint them as victims. They have known for ages that certain practices they engage in are harmful to the environment, but of course they have continued in the interest of producing more yield. People who claim to be for saving our climate taking this stance is exactly what makes people get "doomer" about climate policy. If you stand with the dutch farmers on this, you cannot authentically want real change.
@become-pneuma
@become-pneuma Жыл бұрын
Forcing local farmers to sell their land to the state is not change its control. If the Dutch government was serious about these farmers adjusting to environmental regulations, they would have a transition period to give these farmers time to adjust to new fertilizer rules (btw other options besides nitrogen fertilizer are not viable for mass farming atm), and they would compensate the 30% of livestock they want to kill above market value, not give them an ultimatum of change your fertilizer without any viable alternatives and kill your livestock or we take your land. If the Dutch government was serious about combatting climate change they would go after Shell with billions of dollars in oil drilling operations not Hans the farmer from the lowlands with 20 cattle. What makes me a doomer on climate change is people ignoring the biggest polluters and going after people instead, pretending like this will solve the situation.

The history of extreme totalitarians attacking farmers and causing famine lingers over this topic like a dark shadow. Even if environmental problems are urgent, totalitarian violence will likely cause far more environmental destruction and not do much of anything to slow down human industrial activity otherwise. How many citizens in the Netherlands can make lifestyle changes on individual and collective scales to exit the industrial system if they are literally starving? If you have important information that would add nuance and explain the situation more clearly, from a different angle, then share online- make videos, write about it. Especially if you are in the Netherlands, you could get more localized info and give better cultural, economic and historic context than outsiders might otherwise see. I care a lot about the environment, but aggressive and hostile Environmentalists pushed me away from partnerships in their groups. And even worse, by repeatedly calling anyone slightly different or less aggressive than them "Deniers", they actually got me to think of myself as more skeptical of Climate Change than I actually was. Because I saw it as a very complicated concept and would rather learn from a variety of sciences and industries etc, than act dogmatically from a blind faith. The irony here is that many people who are seriously afraid/shocked by the attack on Dutch farmers are actually VERY receptive to the idea that we are going through a major crisis and that is why they care about it. They would not be close-minded to the idea we are in an environmental crisis, if you are wise in how you interact with them.

Maybe I can shed some light on the farmers protest in the Netherlands, since I’m Dutch. From what I understand, years ago the EU set up some guidelines regarding the emission of nitrogen and ammonia. However, the Dutch government (and especially of the parties in the coalition) kept putting it off saying that “future technologies” will allow the yield to keep growing while the emissions would come below the EU guidelines. Surprise, surprise, that didn’t happen, and now regulations have to come in place to get emissions at and acceptable level before the deadline. The farmers got lied to, but they knew the regulations would come eventually and didn’t do anything about it. On the contrary, they kept expanding, thus increasing the emissions. This all led to the protests with farmers blockading motorways and distribution centers of major supermarket chains, dumping manure and hay (and sometimes setting it on fire), and in some instances even dumping asbestos. There haven’t been any deadly accidents yet, but if those protests continue, it’s not a question of “if” but “when”. One farmer caused an accident which might have paralyzed him for life. Also, one time they caused an accident involving multiple cars, but since nobody got wounded or died, their reaction was something along the lines of “we don’t care”. Funnily enough, because of these types of protest, their support among the Dutch is dwindling. If someone can to add something I forgot, feel free to!

At least not that I'm aware of, and, in case there's an exception, it probably accounts for a very tiny minority of cases. What I'm saying is, just because a GMO can survive the gene insertion, does not mean that said insertion won't fuck up it's internal metabolism and maybe produce shitty by products, like carcinogenic toxins or something. Don't get me wrong, I don't *think* there's a high chance of this happening, but... Is it honest to say that we know it's safe, tho? Most chemical fertelisers are made with fossil gas, which isn't great. Main problem with chemical fertiliser is that it doesn't add any humus content to the earth making the earth worse at absorbing nitrogen with every crop cycle since most crops themselves consume humus to grow. Earth with low humus content also holds less water which makes the chemical fertelisers flow out of the earth when it rains, ultimately ending up in the sea. Overfertlization of bodies of water is currently a ecological disaster and the use of chemical fertiliser has a major part in killing most life in the Baltic Sea.

I’m pretty sure the issue wasn’t that they don’t seed because no farmer is out there using last years seeds to plant the next years crop because the rate of each seeds success is really important.. they buy new seed each year because each seed is picked to be successful.. if only 90% of your seeds germinate that’s big lost money.. so they rebuy each year and the germination rate is like 97.. the issues are way more complex then that they makes seeds that withstand sprays because they are modified to and then those sprays wipe out other plants and cause issues if you want to switch back to other brands of seeds after and the contracts are pretty much a deal with the devil that you can never leave montasanto seeds once you do them.. that and if seeds do blow onto other farms crops they were doing some shady shit like suing the neighbors farm for having their plants when they were not under contract and trying to put other farms out of business using this mob like tactic. I watched a documentary about it and it was crazy.. they were acting like the seed mob and farmers with montisano seeds were spraying chemicals that traveled miles in the air that only their crops could survive and wiping out other farms crops.

This issue was the beginning of the end between me and Facebook. My lib friends started posting hysterical anti-GMO memes, I did a bit of research about it, asked some questions on farming pages (the average farmer is quite matter-of-fact about how the tech is applied, go figure), then tried to introduce a little reason into my lib friends' organic fandom. Instant retaliation. Never mind that my history of progressive political opinion was firmly established over years of discourse...defend the use of GMOs, and suddenly I was a corporate shill. Pro tip...crunchy libs love being asked whether the organic farming industry has its own profit motive or if sellers of "all natural" products benefit from emotionally manipulative propaganda. They're *totally* willing to engage in that conversation. 😵

One of the biggest reasons GMO's became less liked is how they were being used and not necessarily because the tech is inherently harmful. Though admittedly that nuance is lost to a lot of anti-gmo folks. Glyphosate-resistant products and terminator seeds (as well as a few things Vaush mentioned in the first quarter of the video) are some of the biggest culprits I can still remember. You're not a corporate shill by defending the technology, but you do inadvertently enable the abuse of the technology by exceedingly powerful agriculture companies and that is probably why they were upset. Of course, that is not your fault. GMO technology can and does work. But like any technology, it can be used in incredibly self-serving and careless ways. This is the issue. Anti-GMO narratives are a lot easier to spread when the abuse of the technology is unregulated. But I guess even the GMO argument is really more about corporations getting away with greedy crap that hurts the country/world than it is GMOs in particular. It's kinda like what people would do if we had a full blown nuclear war and survived. People would reflexively hate nuclear technology for generations.

Vaush I gotta correct you on a thingat 15:00. There's a common story about some farmer who got sued by Monsanto for seed blowing into his field. That seems to be what you're referring to. It's bullshit. There was a case in 1998 of a farmer being sued by Monsanto for infringing their patent because he had roundup resistant canola seeds in his field that he hadn't bought from them. (Whether they should be allowed to patent a seed is a seperate conversation but legally they can prevent that) The facts of the case though are the farmer found some errant canola growing outside his property and isolated it by spraying roundup on it all to identify the resistant plants. He then saved all the seeds from those plants and replanted his field with them the next year. This is not in dispute, even by the farmer. He DELIBERATELY planted his ENTIRE field with Monsanto seeds, his argument was that he should be allowed since he just found them and had not signed the usual agreement to not save seeds that Monsanto requires when selling their product. He lost the case. Monsanto has sued a lot of farmers yes, but there is no documented case of a lawsuit solely for seeds landing in their fields accidentally. It's a very common claim, but it's not true.

I'm Dutch, so I can explain something about the farmers causing an ecological disaster. The Netherlands is the second largest exporter of agricultural products in the world, after the USA, but The Netherlands is 237 times smaller than the USA. Our country is 54% agricultural land, with cows, pigs and chickens shitting on it. How do people not understand that will cause problems? But he's right that it is being addressed incorrectly. @@FlipjevanTiel I am from Finland. And while I agree the nordic model is probably the best system we've had thus far, it's not without its issues; mostly the inevitable drift towards more "free" capitalism or fascism. The nordic model peaked in 70s and 80s, after which the inbuilt oligarchical tendency of capitalism took over. Its easy for few of the rich to consolidate more and more power while shifting the structure of the society towards oligarchy, whereas the worker or voter organisation is extremely difficult. One could argue it was possible in the first place only because USSR existed as an proof that alternatives (even with all their shortcomings) are possible. Today theres no such example, and its easier to imagine an apocalypse than it is an alternative to capitalism. The neoliberal economic ideology empowered by the red scare and the lack of alternative systems as examples has crumbled the power of the unions, eroded much of the state power and centralised power more and more towards the hands of the handful of the rich in each of the respective countries.

@@voinekku Really? I hope you took it as a compliment then. The Netherlands used to be a left-wing country too. That's why we realized an extensive social security system, education for everyone, a good median wage and acceptable income differences. Then the right-wing started fear mongering about immigrants that they brought in themselves as cheap labor and the unemployed leaching of working people, blaming it all on the left and telling people we need to modernize labor, social security, healthcare, education and all those things that normal people benefited from. They promised people that the market would solve all those problems and they privatized all public utilities, privatized our public healthcare system, made the labor market more flexible, made education more expensive, made public housing organizations sell off their property to private equity and private rich investors who don't pay taxes over their rent. That created a whole lot of very rich people, but it also created a race to the bottom for the lower wages. Now we have arrived at a point where housing is only affordable for well educated couples with good jobs. Everyone else is on waiting lists up to 15 years for some small expensive apartments. But we were talking about farmers. Many farmers have been forced out of business, because the price they get for their products is kept low, by food corporations and super markets who have all the power to extort them. They have tried to survive by up-scaling and boosting efficiency. That created massive surpluses and huge exports, which created big profits for the food corporations and automation system manufacturers, but only just kept the farmers alive. It also created a big manure surplus problem, lots of environmental pollution, greenhouse gasses, animal cruelty, barn fires, farm animal disease epidemics, food fraude cases and nuisance to local residents. Left-wing politicians have been warning about the growing problems for decades, but have been ridiculed by the right-wing and silenced by the media. The only way to get attention to the problems has been through lawsuits, forcing the government to act on the escalated problems, because our law obliges the government to protect citizens and nature from destruction caused by companies. Our government has been ineffective in solving any problems it has created in the last decades, so in this case it's not different. They throw a whole fucking lot of money at the problem, but offer no solutions. They just shift the responsibility to the provinces, who are probably forced to take impopulair solutions like asset forfeiture and relocation. Meanwhile only the left-wing is asking to provide perspective for farmers, like scaling them back to sustainable production, with good profits for farmers.

Do research first. GMOs, especially where pesticide forming genes are inserted into the plant genome. I would rather have zero direct genetically modified plants if that stopped the plants with pesticide inserted.
