Fun historical fact: The political entity of the PRC has never held the island of Taiwan in the country's history. Taiwan was an imperial possession of the Qing Dynasty which ruled China, then Japan invaded and occupied it as an imperial possession, then it was given to the Republic of China after WW2.
@JosephKerr273 жыл бұрын
Yet the PRC continues their unfounded claim. It seems pretty distasteful, too, as it echoes the logic of Israeli claims to Palestinian land based on cultural association rather than legal right. The ROC claim for the mainland feels similarly unfounded.
@christophergreen65953 жыл бұрын
@@JosephKerr27 unfounded, but... in a real realpolitik sense, they can't leave an autonomous state allied with foreign interests to have such a geographical position. At best, I imagine Taiwan could come up with a Guantonamo Bay style compromise in the future.
@kokorodokoro3 жыл бұрын
@@JosephKerr27 I don't think that comparison holds 'cause Taiwan and Mainland have a history as a single country, but that country was technically a different one than the one that now inhabits Mainland. So on a legal level it seems reasonable to me too that the country called PRC has no claim over Taiwan (and vice versa). But since PRC and ROC are basically founded by the two factions contending for power over the single territory, it's predictable that each one claims the other.
@christophergreen65953 жыл бұрын
@@waltergrace565 i mean, well... regardless of the 'justice' of the issue, its bad security policy. Similarly with Guantanomo Bay. Leaving aside the awful human rights stuff, most of that is a large naval base for US power projection, 'rented' off the Cubans quite some time ago in a compromise. We were afraid enough of Soviet warships 'in our backyard' and so the Cuban government did a security deal, of sorts. It meant that we stopped trying to overthrow the main island militarily, for the most part, as our security rationale was satisfied. Now its China, a growing economic power, and they have the same concerns about US naval and air bases inside a certain geography. Its rational behavior, like it or not. Again; i am in no way condoning or defending their actions, simply explaining what I believe to be part of their reasoning here.
@arskakarva74743 жыл бұрын
Just to mildly correct (more like expand on the matter) a little bit, Taiwan was not exactly given to ROC after WW2. ROC was put in charge of occupation after Japanese surrendered, and then on their own declared it was a part of China (Japan doesn't care, but it's an important historical detail for the Taiwanese independence movement). It's pretty important to understand that Taiwanese independence movement has always been divergent from mainland politics, and that the period of Japanese colonial rule (and then the 28 Incident and subsequent KMT martial law) did set Taiwan and Taiwanese identity on a part apart from that of the mainland. Taiwan has been separate from China for over a hundred and twenty years now, the situation is such that the PRC's claims are really well beyond even some Sudetenland level of bullshit justifications (and the KMT's claims on the mainland all the more comical if anyone there still takes them seriously).

For people who don't know: for a country to be "officially" recognised as one i.e. a member of the UN, they require the UN security council to vote to confirm them as a member by a majority as well as having all 5 of the permanent members of the security council (USA, France, UK, Russia and China) to vote in favour so regardless of whether America recognises Taiwan as a country in an "official" manner doesn't matter because China will never be in favour of it. So Jackson's triade on America offically recognising Taiwan is irrelevant because it doesn't matter what America does in this regard it matters what the security council as whole does together.

What about the Bay of Pigs? Cuba was only able to defend against US backed invasion forces because of intelligence and military support of the USSR. Does that mean that Cuba didn't have a right to exist due to their reliance on Soviet support? That's not hypothetical; that shit happened.
@dantealighieri84033 жыл бұрын
I love Dylan, but man he needs to grow a spine. The moment he got to his Cuba hypothetical and Jackson said 'I don't deal with hypothetical, only facts" after having forced Dylan through all the hypothetical hoops of Israel having no right to exist because of outside help AND having to prove Taiwan wouldn't use the weapons for aggressive purposes: that should have been an immediate kick from the call. That and combined with the childish insults, the Alpha bro posturing, the constant lying, the bad faith interpretations of Dylan's points, and the incesent talking over to stall Dylan from talking shows Jackson wasn't here to debate; he was here to force Dylan into silent submission to claim 'The W' and siphon Dylan's viewers for his failed channel I hope other content creators learn from this and Vaush's experience that Jackson isn't worth platforming for views

One day I got in a small disagreement with him about the “get out the vote” stream Hasan did with AOC, Ilhan Omar, etc. Jackson was just being unreasonably non-supportive about it - claiming Hasan did it merely for clout. His reaction was a non issue but it gave me pause, you know? Not too long after, he was pushing for Tulsi Gabbard, even after her transphobic bullshit, so I stopped watching his content. It’s kinda wild seeing him like this. His personality is significantly different. If I wasn’t busy with coursework, I’d probably do a deeper dive into his journey - why he is where he is.
