Vauxhall Astra Mk4 (G) Replace Rear Coil Springs And Corroded Rear Brake Lines

This is the last part of the MOT failure this Vauxhall Astra Mk4 needed to be done. I replace the rear suspension springs and also had to replace the rear brake lines. They were corroded to the pipe fittings as well so I had to cut the brake pipes and make new pipe connections using a brake flaring tool. It then passed the MOT for another year.

Martin, I can't begin to emphasise how helpful you are mate. Had a failed MOT on my Astra H in June and lost my job at the same time due to the inability to commute, so initial work was done on a budget and a lot of manual graft. I had to replace both front brake lines, hoses, de-rust and protect the entire underbelly, subframes, rear axle, all four knuckles, exhaust mounts, fuel tank straps. I did everything but the rear lines and hoses, due to cash flow. Now the rears have to be done because o/s is leaking after attempt to remove. Luckily both are connected by separators so no more aggro trying to loop them through the engine again. You proper helped me out about 2 years ago when I did my own first full service after Vauxhall wanted a Kidney and a litre of blood after the year previous only went half-arsed and conned me out of 400 sobs, so I told them to cop that, I'll do it myself! You showed how to do a quick air-bleed on the Astra Z16XER which is pretty much the same as my Z18XER, after replacing the coolant. My car was overheating after the change and with a few quick pumps of the hose it was resolved. I couldn't find a result anywhere, so if I didn't see your video mate I'd have been drudging through the internet for days. Now, you've got two new videos for jobs for jobs I want doing, this and the lower arms and drops, and the G near enough has the same subframes as the H from what I could see. I want to replace the lower arms but I have been a bit apprehensive about doing the work because of limited space and specific tools but watching you do them has given me the confidence to get it all done ready for the MOT. Honestly mate, can't thank you enough for the effort you put in. One of the most valuable and informative channels on KZbin. Once I'm back out of the red I'll throw you a drink mate. All the best 👍

Totally enjoyed that Martin. I’ve got one of those flaring tools I bought years ago but never knew how to use it. Thanks for the Tutorial it’s very much appreciated. I wouldn’t normally tackle a job like that on my brakes, but now if it arises I will definitely have a bash. JF.EGWO. 👍🔧

I was surprised that you chose to do a double flare with those nuts. I`ve learned that double flare nuts shall have threads all the way out to the flare, while bubble flare nuts will have a small threadless area at the end. Anyway I´m glad it worked out well for you. I´ve also noticed that copper-nickle tubing grows together with the nut. Next time I´ll try to use some copperpaste on the tube as a layer between the tube itself and the nut. Maybe it helps… Stay safe and keep posting :-)
