Thoroughly enjoyed that Mel, used to rebuild diesel engines in Liverpool and go all over the country and Europe repairing and overhauling... I got out the game when I split up with the missus and now own a vivaro for my own little business now that I've seen how you did that I will have no questions now when I do mine... My van is a 57 plate 2.0 has covered 184000 currently... Same engine and box I bought from a family member wit 94000 on clock I service it every 4 to 5 months oil and filters wise and it never skips a beat... Still on original turbo too! Never gets abused daily commute from Liverpool into north Wales and back daily... Served me very well so far mate I can't complain. Keep up the content mate very helpful indeed. 👍

Timing tools for this are MOT 1969 and MOT 1970. They must be used. Cam timing is out on this engine. Slot in the exhaust cam should be horizontal.

What brand timing tool would you recommend? I have oil leak from timing cover and my traffic 2008 is on 130k miles without service history. Many mobile pros has rely long booking list and mine has quite bad oil leak so doing research on how to do chain replacement but finding timing tools are used even by mobile pros on these engines to time it then turn twice and see if the timing tool fits perfectly to confirm good timing. People feedback about lower mpg after timing done ( obviously right way ).

@@JJ-jc8yv I used an eBay kit on my 2.3 master which is the same tools as the 2.0 dci in your van. Different tools to the 1.6 in this video that I’ve listed above. The Renault workshop manual doesn’t actually say to turn the engine over and recheck timing. It is a good practice, however. Can only see lower mpg being from not using tools. Using the tools correctly and following the correct procedure, the timing cannot be wrong.
@JJ-jc8yv

@richards4456 I'm in same mind about mpg consumption, need timing tool to make sure it's 100% correct. I thought one tool does m9r, m9t and r9m engines but you have mentioned as 1.6 is different . I seen timing tools starting from as little as £35 quid on bebay but obviously not branded what's your thoughts on not branded tools. In past non branded tools served me well if taking care of. Sealey timing kit looks same but cost about £135 instead ;) Laser kit isn't cheap too.

Hi, this is a great guide for the job. I'm doing a chain replacement on a 175k Nissan Xtrail that broke its chain at 70mph and would be interested in how the crank /cams can be re-timed if no marks are present on the sprockets and the chain is off. Fingers crossed no valves are damaged - the cams/valve springs are not easy to view on this engine without a load of extra top end strip down.
@melsmotors
@melsmotors Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, sadly on this engine I didn't have any tech data for locking tools, hence the painted marks. At 70mph you would have almost certainly broke every cam rocker. I would be astonished it there was no engine damage, you may be lucky! I would remove the injectors and a carry out a cylinder leak test for bent valves. If they're bent, engine out, this is the easiest way to remove the head, not a driveway job! Good luck and fingers crossed. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂🤞

Great video and great explanations. I think it was a hard work spending probably 5 hours on it. Really nice video! Aldo it looks good I'm confused why you did not used a chain locking kit for installing the new chain ? Very complicated and handy job and there's a high chance of damaging the whole timing without it. I noticed that the new camshaft sprocket wasn't lined up with that mark (the little camshaft sprocket hole should be at 12 o'clock and also use a permanent liner paint for marking it, so that the guys that will change that in the future should have a pro and easier job). The new chain (if it's OEM) has two special links (coloured kinda brown) that should be on top (12'o clock) on that camshaft sprocket and one special link (also brownish) so that link goes under the crankshaft sprocket at 6 o'clock. Are you guys upset with the Torque wrench? Haven't seen one bolt tightened while using it. (or mention the torque for special bolts)

Thanks for your lengthy message. My videos are for entertainment only and not a guide for repair, I don't want to be liable for your mistakes, I never mention torque settings in my videos as they differ from vehicle to vehicle and I also don't waste time videoing me torquing up bolts as to appease people. There was also no data available for locking pins as shown in the video. Thanks again for watching and I look forward to watching some of your accurate videos. 🙂👍

Even if you use chain locking kit, which actually locks only crankshaft and camshafts, you will need to install the camshaft chain sprocket yourself anyway, as you said hole to 12 o'clock, but there is no way to make sure it is exactly there.

Can't believe its only 66k. Mine is on 160k with no issues. The timing chain is inherently noisy at times on start up. Mine has done it from 55 miles delivery mileage on the clock. It is intermittent, and goes after.4 or 5 seconds of starting. It seems to be a characteristic of this engine.

Really good video, I liked the explanation of there not being a "stretched chain" and instead the links wear out giving the impression that it's stretched. The camshaft timing confused me though, on another video there seems to be markings on the sprockets, some even have one or more gold links on the chain which you then have to align up with the top and bottom sprockets. Whereas this relied on good old tipex, be fluffed if that rubbed off 😂 I'm glad you shown how to time both the top and bottom without the camshaft locking tool, unless you get one imported there's none in the UK I can find. Any reason you decided against the crankshaft/flywheel locking pin to keep the bottom in time? Also, with the gasket sealent I tend to find a lot of people stating you should tighten bolts just a tad and leave for around 24 hours for the sealent to fully dry and then Nip them upto torque specs, I was going to do that myself as the R9M is notorious for leaking on the front cover. Last but not least, was it not worth replacing the oil pump chain?
@melsmotors
@melsmotors 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, unusually there were no timing tools recommended in my technical data for this engine, I do keep a lot of timing tools but I only needed one, Tipex! The pump chain didn't seem too bad, I guess only time will tell. I siliconed both faces saving me 24 hours, every mechanic will work in their own way and will have their own tricks and tips for repairing different jobs. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 👍😊

unfortunateley on that engine in the Video it's one of the recent R9M engines which doesn't have an oil pump cover any more, it's the whole sump that needs taking off to remove the oil pump and therefore change the pump chain = means removing the fxxxxxg gearbox ! :o My R9M engine is quite old, maybe yours too, we have a small oil pan you can easily remove and take out pump and then the chain, the chain kit only costs around 30 quid too (~25 euros) so yes I strongly recommend to change both. Also gives the sump a good inspection :) I changed my oil pump at the same time which was a bit of a waste of time as the old one didn't have much wrong with it, I thought it was the cause of strange noise sometimes, it just seems when the oil is very hot and I start the engine the tensionner drains itself so makes a big chain rattle for 2 secs. This was happening all the time before changing the chain, but now just occasionnaly.

It's impossible to get wrong. The exhaust and intake cam sprockets are geared together and they can't be out because he never touched the gears. They don't even recommend a cam locking tool for this engine as it would be completely pointless, for this reason. I didn't see a single thing wrong with what he did and I work on a fleet of these horrible tin can vans. Brilliant for the price you pay for them but far from brilliant by any other metric.

good video. Just a extra bit of advice though. Always turn the engine a least 2 revolutions by hand before starting it. that way you will detect any valve to piston contact in case you've made a mistake. otherwise just using the key will bend valves.

great video, would never dare risking without the cam timing tool however, I recommend it to assure the camshafts are lined proberly ;) The OEM's recommend to take the engine out, they're wrong I've seen many do this job in the car haha. I changed mine with just 80 000kms on it, how many did this one ? I'm guessing about 100k miles by the look of it. Mine has now near 170 000 km, but sometimes starting to rattle again, I'd suggest every 200 000kms at most we should change this chain if we don't want noises, saying that some are noisy some aren't... Really good, informative video. What was the mileage of the van, there seems to be so much conflicting information as to when the chains need replacement.?
@melsmotors
@melsmotors 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lawrence, the mileage on this van was around 65k miles. You replace the chain when it's noisy, there is no interval usually, some manufacturers have recommended intervals and there's further information within the dealer network as they have recommendations through their TSB (technical support bulletins) BMW's 125-150k miles, Ford 1.8D 125k miles. This isn't information you could readily get. Most of the info you find on Google and like are out of date and recommendations change frequently. Most reputable garages subscribe to up to date technical data, we have subscriptions inside and outside of the dealer network. We spend £1000's per year on tech data, diagnostic updates and diagnostic tools, also on technical training so that we don't get left behind. Thank for your comment and thanks for watching 😊👍

I changed the timing chain on my 1.6 dci on Megane 2014 at 150k km because it was rattling during cold starts. Hi, changing an oil pump is a bit drastic! You can't just change something as expensive and as reliable as an oil pump! Don't get me wrong, pumps can pack up. But have you done any kind of checks? at least an oil pressure test? You can't see what an oil pump does so you'll require a gauge.

Depends what engine you've got. Really doesn't matter that much either way. Specs are something like 90 Nm +50° or 130Nm + 50° for a biturbo. Either way, as tight as you can by hand it's not critical. It's a 12pt 21mm bolt into a steel shaft so to break it you'd have to weigh a ton. You did hear the engine start and run in the end right? and it's been back for 2 services since without an issue. This isn't a tutorial on how to change your timing chain, it's for entertainment!
