Funny how most of the things you experience in Canada mirrors mine in Australia. My class comprised 95% student of Asian origin. And as you said, they stick together. I can't speak to their level of wealth but I know a few of them were well to do. I do know I was isolated. Even while lectures were going on, they shared ideas amongst themselves in their language making it difficult to learn from them (if something relevant had been said). . . I can't overstate how I struggled through my studies but I kept my eyes focused on excelling knowing how much sacrifice my family were making in order that I may be there. . . That aside, I had a different experience with people of diverse cultures at my place of work. Beauty in diversity.

Fisayo Fadairo Yup. Uber wealthy Chinese (plus some other Asian ethnicities) have immigrated in massive numbers to Australia, Canada (especially Vancouver), and some parts of America (it’s weirdly not as prominent). It’s sad that Canada is willing to turn a blind eye to the housing crisis because so many Chinese bought millions worth of homes. They also stick together. I don’t blame them. They clearly share almost mirrored interests and ofc they enjoy the comfort of their native culture/ language.

Not always been that way !Teenagers with serious off-the-chain-money, for the last 25-30 yrs. We have always had a strong asian presence but mainly middle-class and working class. There’s a distinct difference between the early Cantonese and Toisanese-speaking Chinese from Guangzhou and early Hong Kongers (and other places around the world like the Jamaican-Chinese, Chinese from India, etc.) who have been in Canada for generations, with the largest influx in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I’m 3rd generation Chinese...my grandfather immigrated to Montreal at the age of 18 in 1918. He had to pay Chinese head-tax due to discrimination laws at the time (lots of documentaries about that). Most Chinese during that time and prior (who built the railroads) were either poor or middle class and were seeking a better life. So, our family and many others like our ancestors were NOT rich like many of the new Chinese mainlanders. So, when people say, “Chinese are rich and buy up everything” it is a stereotype and only a small part of the picture. Yes, there’s quite a large community of us early Chinese and Canadian-born Chinese primarily in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Our ancestors were the unsung heroes who built the Canadian railroads (paid much less than their white counterparts) and original Chinatowns across Canada! Due to past hardships and humble beginnings, we tend to be very humble, generous and polite folk. Not trying to brag, but it’s a common trait amongst all longtime Canadian-Chinese folks I know. Hence, there’s usually a big disconnect between us and the mainland Chinese community. I personally don’t know any mainlanders well and I don’t even know how to speak Mandarin. Primarily, because as mentioned in this video, they tend to stick within Chinese communities like themselves. That part is true. It’s interesting how we are one race ethnically and culturally, however we’re totally separate socially and in most cases, linguistically.

Those really rich Chinese communities are new money Chinese. The old China towns were pretty humble actually. The Chinese tendency to be very insular and not bother to learn our language was part of keeping them back, since you can't benefit from everything we have to offer if you can't be bothered to integrate. Now, w/ these neauveau riche Chinese (often w/ ill gotten gain from their own corrupt country), they can come here because of lax laws and they no longer have to learn the language to get ahead, so they don't. This has created all manner of problems for Canada, like drastic housing bubbles. There's all sorts of documentaries and information on that last, so I'll leave it there.

I live in Prince Edward Island, Canada. We've been having a growing population in Chinese people buying out businesses, even my own son's daycare centre which ended getting closed down due to horrible and deployable practices.. like putting my son in a closet for misbehaving. they later found out that he was employing people without proper credentials. We now have a housing crisis that is serious. No one has anywhere to live let alone anywhere within reasonable prices compared to just a couple of years ago. There is nothing for us. They have taken over and we are in a terrible housing crises and hundreds of children left without proper daycare facilities even. While they drive their expensive vehicles and our government leaving this happening.. I can't help but feel outraged. What to do about this rage, I don't know. Because as of now, there are literally hundreds and hundreds of people living in their cars because of nowhere to live, meanwhile they keep opening up fake business at the cost of even children (including my own) so that they can achieve their own financial bonus. How can I not be mad?

Not really. i was about to start my own thread to explain this, but I'll explain it a bit here. If you live in an area (and this likely what we now call Hongcouver), because the Chinese have close to balkinized it, it can appear they mostly are. It's only because of that area, w/ a large and recent influx of rich Chinese w/ new money. Most China towns, the old ones, the Chinese are far from rich. They may have worked their way up to middle or even upper middle class, but lots of them are still poor and struggling to establish. The rich Chinese are a concern and also a scandal to those that know the inside scoop, because there's a lot of money laundering going on in our countries. China is super corrupt, but because of lax laws we had and lack of protectionism, they could come to countries like Canada, launder their money, create drastic housing bubbles as well and other long term problems. Some of these legal loopholes were rectified, but Retardeau is likely opening the laws back up since he's very into globalism and doesn't care about our people, or culture at all.

I also met and worked with the Chinese as friends and co-workers. Mostly middle class and paying rent .For the past 25-30 yrs - a new class migration with work/business attachment(s) to Hong Kong or mainland China and deep pockets started. House, kids, sometimes mother, here - but work overseas. Even a teenager left to care for a big, expensive house/condo by himself - but work overseas. !. Now its common to see a UBC student driving a Maserati. Not all are Chinese, some are white or Punjabi. Vancouver prior to house speculation was like any other Canadian city with better parks and beaches. Very working class, all ethnicity(s). Now its Rolls Royce and $1mill homes everyone engaging in land speculation. Unlike Quebec, the business community has been allowed signs solely in Mandarin/Cantonese or Punjabi. Although, English is the majority language in Vancouver. Mandarin/Cantonese and Punjabi are the most commonly spoken second language. In a generation, the very fabric of a city has transformed as though what existed before was only temporary.
