never made a video about vector synthesis and how you utilize it to the max in Bitwig studio. Its even probably super powerful now with the scrawl oscillator.

Nice video as always 😎! BTW the Vector-4 is actually ideal for making a vector synth IMO. Take a mixer, connect the oscillators, turn down all volumes to zero, set modulation intensity to 1 for each corner and the modulation curve to logarithmic to avoid that the volume drops when fading between oscillators. Done :)!

Inspiring video! I'm now picturing 20 wave sources and a dodecahedron with a ball bouncing around inside it... Damn, I wish I had time to learn to code VCV rack modules - I have SO many ideas, all the time.

You could make an enormous wavetable synth if you used 8 wavetables oscillators and also modulated their index's ( maybe with wavetable LFO's that also modulated their index's with LFO's too ) Edit: Ahh, I see you already did this at the end of the video. I guess then run each oscillator though an individually modulated mid/side eq for spread and pan. I mean let's face it, Bitwig is utterly bonkers at this point. ;)

There are no EQs in the grid tho, and getting polyphonic EQs is not an easy job either (it's possible only through duplicating poly grid layers in the instrument selector).

Cool! I've been wanting to try this myself since v5 was released. Makes me think that it would probably be possible to define a '2D' wavetable, where you can define waveform cycle key frames in two directions, and the space between those two axes gets smoothly interpolated. Then you could achieve a similar thing (and more) with a wavetable synth. Btw, I wish the XY pad would draw a dot per polyphonic voice, like it does for the envelopes and most other modulators.

@PolarityMusic

you can switch the blend mode in the inspector between "equal power" and "equal gain"
@theRumbleChannel

You can also change the modulation curve to logarithmic, which will give you an equal power crossfade

@@PolarityMusic I guess I meant to say a vector modulator that has an even mix of all 8 sources at unity gain when the blend node is at the center of the vector field, which is why I think your first example might be closer to that result.
@TheSameDonkey
@TheSameDonkey Жыл бұрын
Here’s a thought. If you use the vector 8 and want sound in the centre position like you were trying, you could have the volumes down at say 25% and modulate negatively for the attenuators that are on the opposite side. It might take some balancing to get the levels to behave, but it should be doable

Hmmm, this could be very useful for evolving bass sounds where you just need simple sounds but also some "dynamic range" in the higher frequencies. This method makes that very easy. Thanks!

Can you use this technique to blend between different samples using the sampler instead of the oscillator?
@avgchoobafan

its totally possible since the technique is just blending between the volume outputs

in channel or project level the vector 8 can now even blend between complete different sounds + effects. but it was long ago possible using a instrument layer modulating the volume outputs by vector? using the vector for sort of modulating arrangement flow is interesting indeed :D

This approach reminds me little to the FM8 from native instruments, where you could place 4 different presets to all corners doing fm stuff.. THIS is wavetable, right? Very nice! Thanks and best Regards PSPS: thx for explaining the difference, I am asking myself now is that an addition of those x/y scaled wave shapes? Would that be even possible to use different mathematical operations, like XOR, NXOR, Convolution or some exotic stuff? PSPSPS: would that imaginable have that in a 3D space? Even maybe controled by a hygroscope sensor aware device like Iphone?

I would like to make the dot inside the vector modulator to always start from the central point and spiral outward in increasingly larger circles until it reaches the border, then come back spiraling toward the central point in increasingly smaller circles, independent of the project phase or bpm. What modulators should I use? I spent lots of time trying to achieve this behavior using 2 or more LFOS, but my dot seems to always move in a weird pattern accross the field. My maths background is obviously not that great, but I suspect it would have something to do with sine and cosine. Thank you in advance for your reply and also for all the tutotorials you have been putting out over the past several years.
@PolarityMusic
@PolarityMusic Жыл бұрын
you need either one lfo for the the circle, or two if you cant alter the phase. for the x or y coordinate you need to put the lfo 90° out of phase (same sine modulation) and you need one lfo that modulates the amount of the lfos modulating the xy coordinates. then you get what you want.

Wait, this means it's possible to have 3D blend? This is so powerful for sound design. Imagine having a 3D blend between different scrawls, samplers, FX, whatever. I wanna upgrade so bad lol

if you want to call multiple vectors 3D then yes :D. you can also creat multiple of these 8 blends and blend between them. so maybe 8x8 and crossblend everything. and maybe add/blend fm :D

Idea for a workaround for bipolar values in vector 8: you can add negative modulation from the modulation point opposite to the one you use positive modulation from. So 16 modulation assignments instead of just 8 positive ones. But should we? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wavetable synthesis is not more like a sampler than any other form of synthesis. It's rather less like it. Every oscillator which is playing static waveforms with only the pitch changing could be easily realized with a sampler. That's the case in basic subtractive synthesis, FM synthesis, and also vector synthesis. With wavetable synthesis, it still works more or less but it works worse than with other forms of synthesis. Let's say you want a wavetable with 10 waves. You arrange them in one sample which is 10 times as long as one cycle of those waves. You set the loop length to the cycle length and modulate the start from 0% to 90% for the wavetable position. What you get is not the same as with a normal wavetable oscillator. In a wavetable oscillator, you slowly blend between wave 1 and wave 2. With a sampler, you slowly replace wave 1 with wave 2 starting at the right. That could drastically change the sound because you get a value jump.

please do not always take everything literally i say in my videos :D for me its a funny meme and i alway say, "a sampler is all you need to make music", which is also not true if you take it literally. because you can just stomp your feet and call it music ;) btw the sampler has a cycles mode, to imitate wavetable osc behaviour and i highly recommend it, because youre not limited to a number of tables.
