Even with the whole Epilogue, I still see it as Terry being his own person. Just cause you share the same DNA doesn't mean you'll end up a one for one copy. You will still have your own experiences and way of thinking. All it really means is you might have a better body physique. Kinda like how Stephanie dad is Cluemaster, but she became a hero rather than a villain. DNA only takes you so far. Also would explain how both Terry and Matthew have black hair but parents are clear gingers, was bound to be a twist that or gene pool of the family is not in favor of gingers. Edit: To infinity and Batman Beyond.

Yeah I agree also the concept of everyone can be batman is by itself wrong. Bruce has immense amounts of money and time something most people don't have. He also has immense amounts of training and an incorruptible moral code which would be hard to find.Terry was a very different Batman and it had nothing to do with his birth epilogue proved that if anything. Yes he was born Bruce's son, no he wasn't destined to be batman. He chose to put on the suit despite bruce himself saying no. Also I don't like his conclusion that him being Bruce's son invalidates his entirely different personality.

In some continuity’s tarry and Damian Wayne are the same person and in the brave and the bold tv show Damian is the son of Bruce and catwomen witch is ironic because 1. In the story arc where Batman proposed to catwomen. In a side story Damian asks catwomen sarcastically so now that you and father are getting married should I start calling you mother and 2. Damian Wayne and tarry maginus are both genetically engineered by secret organizations to replace Batman

IMO Season 2 was the BEST season of the show because it actually felt like Terry's story without being overshadowed with fan favorite episodes featuring Bruce's old (literally) rogues going against the new Batman. Sure, it kinda felt like Danny Phantom or the Spectacular Spider-Man where a high school hero went up against villains. However, I think it really helped Terry standout even more than him going against a Mr. Freeze or Ra's Al Ghul

I’d have to choose season 1 as the best. Season 2 while having a lot of good episodes, also had a lot of really “empty” episodes. When it came to the villains, the themes and the dynamics between Bruce and Terry, it just didn’t have as much depth as season 1. It was while rewatching season 2 that I realized Batman Beyond as a whole can be pretty style over substance at times.

Batman beyond finished it’s an entire run before Danny Phantom aired. Also Terry rarely fought Bruce’s old foes. Mr. Freeze in season one, the return of the joker movie, which takes place after season 2, and Ra’s appearance which was season 3. Bane made a cameo appearance. Terry fought his own foes mainly: Blight, Stalker, Shriek, Spellbinder, The Royal Flush Gang, the terrific trio for an episode, Curare, Mad Stan, and more.

When characters like Dick or Damian become Batman it feels temporary, and I know Bruce is gonna come back one way or the other. But Terry actually felt like a new Batman. I loved the Batman Beyond show and yes it wasn't the BTAS and it had its flaws (the weak villains) but it still was an amazing sequel. And about the clone thing in JLU, I agree that they kinda wrecked the mentor-mentee relationship between Bruce and Terry just for a little bit of conflict in a single episode, but due to Epilogue being the awesome story that it is I think I don't really mind that much.

The Beyond villains given the Arkham treatment would be shway, since many are creepy already. The Splicers for example. An Arkham Beyond game could also expand on the villain legacy gangs, with areas of Neo Gotham being controlled by gangs themed on modern Batman villains for variety, and the Court of Owls in the technological Beyond setting is just begging to be told.

I know why some people don't like the fact that Bruce is genetically Terry's dad, but I don't mind it. I mean if Terry grew up with Bruce being somewhat an uncle to him, spending a lot of time with Bruce, then becoming Batman later to find out Bruce is genetically his dad then yes I would hate it. But there was all this set up to Terry being a copy of Bruce, but wasn't. His parents didn't die, they weren't rich, and even got divorced. Terry even became a street kid, part of gangs, and went to juvy, and wasn't as intelligent as Bruce was. Not calling him stupid, just not intelligent like Bruce was, but more intelligent in other ways from growing up more on the streets. Then it was Terry's choice to become Batman and continue to be Batman, not because of genetics but because he wanted to be. I mean the whole episode of Terry finding out Bruce is genetically his dad he was pissed mirroring how people like you feel about this change. But I think the episode does a good job on showing and explaining that this doesn't change anything because Terry is still Terry and not a Bruce clone. He still went through normal hardships ordinary people could go through, like divorced parents and street life, unlike Bruce who had money and parents, until they died. Also, I my mind Bruce still isn't his actual biological dad, just genetically dad because of what Waller did, just what I feel about it. I do see your frustration with it, but I see it as just because they're biological similar doesn't mean Terry would always become Batman. Becasue his child hood clearly saw him going in a different way but Terry decided to do better, not because of genetics but because he wanted to. Just how I see it

I love the fact that Terry is Bruce’s son. Lineage is not nothing. It explains how Terry is like Bruce. He isn’t a clone. Genetic behavior is a real thing; look it up. It helps explain why Terry was still Batman in the future and why the rest of Bruce’s team members are not. Not anyone could be a Batman. I don’t mean because of his money or anything like that. It’s his brain and his love for his fellow man. Batman’s allies did it for the fun of it. They did it because they had a chip on their shoulder. They did it for selfish reasons. It was Bruce’s love for people that kept him going. It was said, and shown, in the show they Terry didn’t become Batman out of some want. He did it because he felt it was is responsibility. The same responsibility that Bruce had. He was smart like Bruce. He was caring like Bruce. He was willing to sacrifice like Bruce. Yes, these traits can be found in a random person; but it only works with Terry and Bruce because they are alike enough to where those traits are perfectly balanced. That is why I like that Terry is Bruce’s son. Plus, the show hints at it HEAVILY. Superman hints at it. Ink hints at it. Even Max hints at it. So, the idea is a solid one.

Seeing him take on Inque in the Bat Armor, or having his youth restored was a treat, even if it was short lived. Such a damn shame this series didn't last a lot longer, and that the Batman Beyond era is pretty much forgotten about. I'm so bored of seeing all these Bruce Wayne movie reboots. I wish they would just give us a Batman Beyond live action movie already. On a side note, I loved the Beyond suit, and Bruce looked badass in it in the pilot episode. Would've been cool to see more of Bruce in the Beyond suit before he called it quits. I hated how they made Terry related to Bruce in that epilogue. Okay, so regarding the whole "Epilogue" thing, I'm going to go out on a limb and say I like it. While on paper I agree with all your points (Vee) and would be inclined to agree, I think the episode really worked overtime to justify it. I think the important thing is that Terry wanted to become and was proficient at being Batman long before he knew he was Bruce's son, as he'd been Batman for like 15 years at that point. I also think he wasn't really bred to be Batman, exactly, as Amanda Waller abandoned "Project Batman Beyond" after the Phantasm wouldn't pull the trigger on his parents, which was meant to replicate the trauma Bruce suffered. Thereby, everything that happened after that point you could say was Terry's free will. Even though he has Bruce's genetics that doesn't guarantee that he'll excel in everything his father did; just look at Harry and Norman Osborn. Lastly, what I liked about the execution is that the revelation isn't met with enthusiasm by Terry, but sorrow and regret. While he had stuck with Bruce through so much the idea that his life wasn't his choice nearly made him quit. All to often in these legacy stories recently the protagonist is borderline obsessed with their origins before they even strike out on a heroic journey, just look at Rey in the sequel trilogy. However, Terry (similar to Luke Skywalker) starts on his journey before he knows he is anyone important and is thus not defined by it, as he was a proven hero before the reveal. Hope this helps and/or sheds some new light on it! Keep up the great content!

I remember not even giving a chance to this show when I was a kid, it was only after I played the Arkham Series that I felt nostalgic about the BAS and then finally watched Batman Beyond, and I loved it, this series is just was good as the original animated series, I don't think Terry is as good of a Batman as Bruce Wayne, but he wasn't bad by any means, just different and original in its own way. The only thing I didn't like about it was how he got to be the Batman, he just casually walked into the Batcave and putted on the suit, it was just too easy for some random kid to find this super secret cave purely by chance when literally no one else could, but he also had all of Bruce Wayne's strenght and talent despite not going through the same years of training and dedication as himself or any of the Robins, but even then I must say, I think he gives a far better Batman than anyone else in the Batfamily could be, and the episode where Bruce gets the magic soup that makes him young again and they fight side by side together is one of my favorite pieces of Batman media.

Well, Justice League (and later Justice League:Unlimited) was a sequel to both Batman: TAS & Superman:TAS. And of course, I guess it depends is you consider *The New Batman Adventures* to be a sequel, or simply to be "season 3 of *Batman:TAS* with a revamp" ...

From all the interviews and commentaries I found most often they say that the show takes place 50 years after the original Batman animated series and 20 years after Bruce retires from being Batman. So that would put him at about 60 years old in the opening sequence of the Batman Beyond pilot and about 80 in the remainder of the show. Lazarus Pit episode notwithstanding.

13:00 - Honestly, other than the logistical loopholes that you'd have to leap through to make this happen, I don't mind this change to Terry. Like, it's ultimately Terry that chose to be Batman even with his origins retconned like this. He easily could've just gone further down the bad kid path in life because with his talents, he could've become Gotham's most unstoppable crime lord. But he chose to do the right thing, and by choosing to do it his own way, it makes the differences between him and Bruce stand out even more. He didn't beat Joker by beating him up or outsmarting him like Bruce always did, he did it by getting into his head and tormenting him in a way no one else ever had. Side note, wouldn't this retcon to Terry make Bruce Wayne the biological father to Terry's little brother as well? To infinity and Batman Beyond.

I remember when the show was announced and it WAS confirmed that the show took place 40 years after the events of BTAS. Bruce was supposed to be in the 80s. Why Bruce Timm started to backtrack on this is beyond me. As for the DNA reveal, I agree it wasn't my favorite plot twist, but at least there was a feeble explanation for it. It seems that TPTB thought it odd that two light haired parents produced two dark haired sons (yes, Terry's brother was also Bruce's biological son) so they decided to have the DNA change to better explain it. Of course this lead to speculation that the McGuinness' marriage dissolved because Terry's dad suspected infidelity!! Personally, I was glad that Barbara was spared from being Oracle here, as I never liked making her shooting and paralyzing cannon (initially, it was supposed to be a one off story, but some do-gooders wanted to make her a heroine of the disabled). I was also disappointed we didn't get to see what became of Nightwing/Dick Grayson in this universe, or see him try to mend fences with Bruce.

Also, I can not agree more with you Vee that Terry McGinnis is, without a doubt, my favorite successor/non-Bruce Batman. He is such a great, multi-layered character (played to perfect by Will Friedle) that really earned the right to be Batman, genetics or no. If I were to sum up Terry in a word it'd have to be: loyal! Especially in a world where every other of his sidekicks left Bruce and had enough of him by a point, Terry sticks with Bruce through thick and thin. Another aspect I always liked about him is how he comes off as something of an old soul in this futuristic setting, as certain of his values seem divergent from a lot of his school contemporaries and make him similar enough to Bruce to be able to relate. I feel like the whole juvi stint Terry did made him grow up younger and gives him a level of maturity/sense of perspective that make him feel psychologically old enough to be bought as Batman. Great character!

Its funny you bring up Spider-Man because I've always looked at Terry as a Peter Parker clone and this series as "what if a Peter Parker clone became batman in the year 2050". And I love every second of it. I love that they managed to keep the same gritty tone as the OG animated series....what set this whole combined series apart was the simple fact that consequences and sometimes even death actually kinda existed...that wasn't the case more times than not with most animated superhero/comic shows/series from my childhood....there's a reason this one (including the OG Animated Series) are truthfully the only ones that stuck with me. I loved them as a kid because it was made from kids in general at the end of the day but I've gone back and binge watched a few of my favorite episodes and tie-in movies multiple times as an adult and from the beginning to the end, it all still holds up and has reasons to appreciate it as an adult as well as a nostalgic kid lol. Don't get me wrong you always knew Batman/Bruce/Terry was never in any mortal danger for obvious reasons but it was always believable that literally everyone else could be atleast to some extent....from Alfred or Gordon to Ace or Barbara. From the beginning of TAS to Beyond was one the best 10 or so year runs in all of comic related media regardless of publisher company or medium. I say this is as someone who typically strongly prefers Marvel. I legit almost put this series on the same pedestal as the infinity sage in marvel/the mcu. (And I haven't even gotten around to watching the justice league stuff again yet lmfaooo)

Actually the wb network never allowed Bruce Wayne's age to be revealed because they didn't want people to see him as old and decrepit. In the episode where Bruce has a birthday, the writers said his age in the script but had to take it out because the network wouldn't allow it. But the writers still maintain Bruce is around 80.

She even had andrea buemont there, not only confirming that she survived mask of the phantasm but that it still was terrys choice to become batman. But at the same time, its an inverse of what happened with the robins. All of them had their families before but bruce became their adoptive father. With terry mr mcginnes was the man who helped intill that drive in him and bruce just helped refine it.

Pretty sure it's both 20 and the 40 (roughly speaking) years later. When we watch the pilot episodes Batman is older and has some gray hair and is struggling to fight crime which leads me to assume it's been some years since the original show roughly 20 years imo. After the opening Bruce now has full on grey hair making it clear a lot more time has passed since the original and is using a cane to walk, personally I would say it has been another 20 year or so later. So imo this show happens many years after the original batman.

All of the old characters they brought back were done brilliantly. Bane as a strung-out wreck of a man from his decades of magic steroid abuse. The tragedy of Mr. Freeze's second chance getting stolen from him like that, and his redemption at the end of the episode was great storytelling. I also loved the episode with Superman and I would have loved to have known more about how Clark's life went. And best of all was the episode with Ra's al Ghul, where his actions were both monstrous and completely in character. The only one of the new villains I really liked was Inque, and she was really just a second rate Clayface. One thing they sort of hinted at in the first season and that the creators have confirmed is that Bruce had lost most of his fortune in the time between BtAS and Beyond. And I'd always had the opinion that it was mostly because he'd just stopped caring about anything once he couldn't be Batman anymore. And that was definitely in character from Bruce. He's tied so much of his identity into being Batman that without it he felt he was nothing. Best illustrated in the episode where the villain tried gaslighting him and Terry asked him how he knew it was fake. Bruce said, "The voice kept calling me Bruce. In my head, that's not what I call myself."

I agree that making Terry the son of Batman dose kinda feel like a sellout but in the episode it also pointed out one of the most important differences between Bruce and Terry , which is that Bruce was driven by trauma were Terry was not, drawing a greater contrast between them proving that it's not the DNA that matters but the man

I actually like the Epilogue reveal. It showcases how both nature (genetics) and nurture (upbringing and experiences) make us who we are. Waller goes through all this trouble to try to recreate Bruce Wayne. Finding a couple with similar psych profiles to Thomas and Martha, giving the father Bat-sperm, arranging for the Phantasm to kill the parents in a recreation of the Wayne murders. Yet it fails, because Andrea respects (possibly loves) Bruce too much to do that to another kid. So, Terry grows up with a completely different childhood from Bruce. His parents are alive, he has a brother, his parents divorce, Terry falls in with a bad crowd and becomes a gang member for a time. He's about as far removed from being Bruce Wayne that he could be. Terry is his own person, shaped by his upbringing and life experiences. Bruce Wayne might be his Father, but Warren McGinnis is his Dad. Terry McGinnis didn't become Bruce Wayne, but he did become Batman.

@@boxingbull523 How? The only thing it changes is explaining the plot hole of hair color. The decisions Terry makes, his achievements as Terry and Batman, are down to how he was raised and the circumstances he’s been in, and Bruce had no part in that. Terry’s motivation to redeem himself in his own eyes is his, not Bruce’s nor given to him by Bruce. In fact, it’s by going against Bruce’s instructions Terry manages to get under Joker’s skin, heckling the Clown Prince of Crime into submission and ultimate defeat. Given that the reveal is the last known point in the DCAU timeline, at least as the TV episodes are concerned, we don’t see how Terry acts long term knowing he’s a biological legacy. In fact the next thing we see him do is reconnect with Dana, which is a Terry thing and not a Bruce thing.

Boxing Bull Terry chose to become Batman on his own actions, because of the events in the two part opener. He got the attention of the Jokerz by distracting them from civilians, Warren was killed because he was about to become a whistleblower and Terry coincidentally was chased to Wayne Manor, which had the tools he needed to investigate the circumstances behind his father’s death. None of this was Waller masterminding events nor Bruce’s DNA influencing Terry. You can see Terry’s sense of justice before he has anything to do with Bruce Wayne or Batman, because he engages the Jokerz with intent to at least inconvenience them during a robbery.
