Vegan Recipe: TVP Sloppy Joes

I demonstrate how to make
TVP (textured vegetable protein) sloppy Joes
1:16 I meant to say defatted (as in removing the fat)
3:05 I start rehydrating the TVP
6:42 I show the rehydrated TVP and start cooking
11:26 I show the TVP filling in the pan
12:11 I show the finished sloppy Joes and take a bite

Wow...this is some very useful information to me. I didn't know about TVP. You've got me thinking about making sloppy joes, spaghetti sauce, tacos, chile, enchiladas and meat loaf. I'm one vegan in a house of meat eaters. I sucks having to cook meat for my family and only getting to eat salad every night. I think the only thing I would do different is use tomatoes and spices because I have a reaction to the preservatives in canned foods. Thanks again Matt! Hugs

One heaping cup went to one little tiny cup :P I think it would be great to add finely diced carrots, dices onions and bell peppers to bulk it up, add texture, make it healthier and cheaper. You would have to cook the veggies then add it.

You can make your own sauce for cheap with ketchup, mustard, sweetener of choice, and any spices you like. You can also use products with no HFCS that way if it is a concern. Thanks for sharing :)

The large chunks are usually found right next to the smaller granules at natural / health food stores, either in bulk bins or prepackaged.

I'd recommend tomato paste instead of catsup, and always extra spices to taste. :) Chili powder, paprika, cayenne, whatever suits you. Spices are inexpensive per use, add a ton of flavor, and are a much healthier option than adding salt, fats or sugar. Thanks for the recipe, though, I've been wondering what I would do with TVP for a while now!

this sounds great, this tvp thing, but, will the food be hot? I keep having the thought that the tvp doesn't hold heat as well as meat and especially since you don't actually cook it, you rehydrate it, does it actually taste like a hot sloppy Joe or just some warm textury stuff? when I'm cooking I like for things to simmer and really mix well, not just get hot.

I add a tablespoon each of steak sauce and soy sauce to the water used to rehydrate the TVP to give it more of a beef flavor.

Not so sloppy joes, theres like an inch over hanging all around and it didn't fall off, that was freaky. And why did you cook it for like 40 minutes, seemed a little long.
