Hey, just wanted to let you know that after (maybe a year?) of passively watching your videos and agreeing with your reasoning but not doing anything about it, I've started my journey to becoming vegan! Can't say what the future will bring, but I'm researching information, trying new recipes, only buying food at the supermarket that doesn't come from animals. I came here to say the same. I always like to think that vegan restaurants are owned and run by a vegan rather than just a business person targetting a specific demographic and that is going to be the case in most places because vegans are such a small minority and mostly not well off enough to eat out often enough. We had just such a cafe/restaurant here in Brisbane. It was so disappointing when they gave up and added meat, dairy and eggs to their menu (it may have changed hands, not sure) but there are few vegan restaurants here and most struggle so I understand it. And they have kept much of their popular vegan options so I have been back a couple of times because they are literally the best vegan option still in that part of town. For me becoming vegan late in life (I was 60) I cannot understand how it can be anything other than a one way street. I now see the meat for what it is. The body parts of exploited young animals. And I just cannot unsee that. I understand the mentality of omnivores because I was one, and vegetarians, because I transitioned via that but ‘ex vegan’ seems like an oxymoron to me.

I think something important to note about nature vs. animal agriculture is that mammal and bird livestock vastly outnumber wild mammals and birds (from Our World in Data "Wild mammals make up only a few percent of the world’s mammals"). So if you thought "nature is cruel so why does it matter what we do", humans are actively perpetuating far more suffering in mammals and birds than nature while having the sole power to end that suffering.

We have a saying here that translates to something like "they sat on the floor between two chairs", meaning they tried to have their cake and eat it too, but their compromise ended up failing both. A formerly vegan bistro going omnivore to save business sounds exactly like that, as you said, selling meat is a surefire way to drive away all vegan customers, and them having been known as a vegan bistro previously will drive away many omnivores too who think vegans are too extreme. Aside from them turning into laughing stock for doing such a 180 on their morals.

If regerative agriculture works, it’s because of the work the animals are doing while they are alive (ie, grazing, stomping the soil). Slaughtering the animal doesn’t do anything to help the soil. You don’t need to slaughter the animals if you want to participate in regenerative agriculture.

Regenerative agriculture is not a sustainable solution, if only for the sheer amount of land it requires. I don't think most people fully grasp how much grazing land you need to feed even just a small herd of cows. Plus, if you're in a northern part of the world, you not only need grazing land, but also land to grow hay for the winter.

Admitting my bias here as it's my field of study... But soils are actually a HUGE carbon sink. Soil health is incredibly important. Now, cover cropping and other non-animal regenerative ag practices are probably just as good. They do require more hands on effort on the part of the land owner though. It's important though to keep the carbon content in our soils at at least a reasonable level because otherwise we will lose yields and not be able to sustain our population.

And? The animals have to eat as well and it isn't possible for all cows with a fate on a plate to eat only from green meadows. We better use the land to produce food directly. So much land has been already deforested and used for agriculture. We can continue using it. Carbon schmarbon is a topic I'm so sick of as it is so often used as an excuse. It seems to justify anything at the moment. Talk to China and India about it.

@@baum7des7lebens7 the idea is to use the land we already use for agriculture in a more responsible way so that we can continue to use the same land. Also, just a note, forests aren't the only important ecosystems, especially in the US. A lot of prairie ecosystem has been destroyed to make way for agriculture. And we really should care about carbon 😅 climate change is a really big issue. Making small changes to a lot of our ag fields will make huge differences. I know other countries are worse, but it's about what's in our control.

7:15 Yeah this. If you are going to use the land, you could probably make more food by growing stuff to feed *directly* to people. I’d have to dive into a pile of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to get into the gritty details (ie how much land to get a proper balanced vegan diet vs equivalent with as little meat as possible but using it for things like core protein+what vegans may need supplements or more intensive vegetables/fruits for etc) And yeah between No or Low-Till agriculture, which should have a similar effect on soil (potentially not as quick, since the “mixing” action of the animals walking about isn’t there, nor the insta-composting of the digestive system, BUT in what i am planning one would do an initial till-in of any needed minerals and a BUNCH of biochar+compost+humic+fulvic acid etc to get it “jump started”, them sprinkle in some Compost Leachate “compost tea”, add in some local worms and whatnot, (hydro) seed your plants and you are good to go. Nearly all clay or sand to Synthetic Amazonian Black Earth in One Year or so! The only advantages i can see are 1.) Low Entry Cost (ie Needing Piles of Soil Additives / Compost / Seeds + Farm Equipment or a Pile of Paid Labor *vs* Some Cattle and Time). Also some ducks and/or goats etc is a far cheaper way to Get Rid of Pests+Weeds than novel Herbicides or Biologics (+Integrated Pest Management Consulting and/or Training on when to use what, which may not be a thing in all areas of all countries yet) and Steam Weeding. Thus may be a valid reason in poorer areas; and I’m not going to shame some farmer in Subsaharan Africa doing this to fight desertification and so on. BUT In wealthier/more industrialized areas, and/or also via more novel concepts like Open Source Hardware (and potentially even Tool Shares or Tool Libraries / More Co-Op Type Stuff) bringing down the cost to get going, I don’t find that argument too applicable especially to the types of people going to bistros (*myself included, i am not holier than thau!*). Also 2.) More Local Grasses and Biomass vs a Farm. This point doesn’t hold up too well since…you can just rewild the place if that is your concern. Granted complexities of property rights, doing rewilding and reforestation not *afforestation* with non-native stuff or making near monocultures that fail etc, but it is doable. But between distributed no/low till gardens for most things, larger commercial operations for staples (Mainly Soybeans and Maize, but also beans/lentils and wheat maybe) we can EASILY have some land to spare for rewilding. In the near future if we lean into Plant Factories (aka Vertical Agriculture, Controlled Environment Agriculture etc) using Renewable or at least Low Carbon (Nuclear as well as renewables) Energy we could MASSIVELY shrink agricultural land needed. I’m rambling but yeah look up Amazonian Black Earth / “Terra Preta” and No-Till Agriculture etc TLDR: Soils can get VERY good without animals. There is a minor point to be made on accessibility to poorer people/social impacts, but at the end of the day, from a Homestead “Food Forest” to an ultra-modern best practices giant Corn-Soybean Field, you can get the same soil quality and probably more food *without animal agriculture*

Also less risk of Zoonotic Diseases that could go Pandemic and *potentially* less food insecurity spikes due to culling and/or mass die-offs from those epidemics, even if they don’t cross over to us Humans. *Although* i am uncertain on the latter, specifically on how much more resilient a proper Modern Best Practices, but not Food Forest level Polyculture (ie Cover Crops/Coplanting, and no-till, and heck maybe even subsurface irrigation and all sorts of great tech is used…but it is still a giant field of Select Strains of Soy and Maize) Farm would be. My brain is telling me it is probably easier to diagnose and treat a field than a herd of animals, but I am neither a Veterinarian or Proper Agricultural Scientist etc so that is NOT a question i can answer without the proper digging for papers and/or consulting actual experts.

Is plant compost as effective for adding all the needed nutrients to the soil as animal based compost? I'm sure the Amazonian black earth comes about from not only decaying plant matter but also from all the wildlife manure and bodies that break down into the soil. I like the idea of veganic agriculture, but also keep hearing about how all the vegan produce still requires either animal manure or lots of chemical fertilizers.

@@oksanakaido8437 On the note of animal stuff, short of maybe beneficial microbes from the animal’s GI Tract and all that, and *maybe* speed, I don’t think there should be much of a difference as long as you have the right chemical composition (can get complex with this, or typical composting “carbon, and nitrogen” material ratios and all that) On the note of “chemicals” they aren’t *that* scary, the main thing is checking that (“Safety Data Sheets” or SDS) and also *Ethical Sourcing*. Most nitrogen fertilizers are made with fossil fuels, but they don’t *have to be*. My dream is decentralized production of them but that’s a rant for another time. Your typical soil test will say what you specifically need, but the only potential hard to find additives from this perspective would be Phosphates, and also some odd trace minerals. On the note of Phosphates, one of my ideas is a sort of mix of Bat Houses (especially GIANT ones like the “Bat Barns” at the University of Florida), and some sort of collection system. Basically the concept of those “Guano Islands” and Bat Houses. Could also maybe work with some types of birds. I think it’s neat because it’s mostly renewable, the animals can probably be *mostly* wild, they probably eat pests and/or do pollination, so all in all pretty neat! The one risk would be potential zoonosis risks, although between monitoring the animals, some sort of automated collection/extraction/application system, and *maybe* a sterilizing step it SHOULD be fine. That’s my rant, but at the end of the day TLDR: Do a soil test, read up on what “optimal soil” is, do due diligence in sourcing materials (although in our current world perfectly ethical is probably out of reach so don’t get TOO overwhelmed trying to do so, although nuance in all this), and have amazing soil!

there is a video you might be interested in discussing. its from philosophytube and in it she is discussing willful ignorance. there is a line in the video where she is talking about how we are all guilty of it, and then she flat out says that she isnt vegetarian and that she deliberately ignores discussions about industrialized meat production for fear it "might" cause her to believe that "eating meat is morally wrong". and she doesnt want that bc, amongst other reasons "her relationship with her body would change". it is simultaneously infuriating and reassuring to hear a carnist say this out loud. she has nearly 2 milllion subscribers and i cant imagine you could get away with saying that about any other cause. would love to hear your take on it. the title is Why We Can’t Build Better Cities (ft.Not Just Bikes) and she says it near the end. her next video is supposedly about how to get people to learn when they are actively refusing to, so it should be all about her going vegan, right?

I would love to have a vegan restaurant near me. I've checked on HappyCow and there are only vegetarian restaurants and other restaurants with vegan options. but yeah. this definitely is justifiable for a boycott. A vegan restaurant near me would mean so much to me that if they started serving meat I'd definitely not eat there again. a small part of me died after clicking the video because of the thumbnail. maybe it's my child-like naivety, but I actually clicked because I thought there would be a heartfelt twist and a restaurant was going to serve food to cows to eat, not serve cows as food to eat.

Very random, but I would love some advice. I have been vegan since 2018 (f23) and am struggling with physical health since end of 2022. I am currently getting diagnosed with fibromyalgia but trying to reduce my symptoms with lifestyle changes I know plant based food is quite good in my case, but sugar and many oils that processed foods contain are not. I really want to stay vegan, I am just struggling with what to eat, as I heavily rely on vegan foods like mock meats to reach my calories and protein intake. And even now I‘m always on the limit. Could you do a video on veganism and certain health struggles (that are not caused by veganism)? Or does anyone have any tips or suggestions for me? Thanks in advance!

No expert, but as a physically active 6ft male I eat a lot of calories every day and it's not a struggle at all. I'd focus on more calorie dense foods (nuts, beans, tofu, tempeh, oils, starchy vegetables, avocados...). I don't eat a lot of processed mock meats. Best to talk to a professional (vegan) dietician though.

Honestly, talk to a vegan nutritionist. It can be difficult to make a plant based diet work for everyone, but at the end of the day if you’re wanting to stay vegan(which you should), then go seek out a professional who can assist.

Well... When Cows are managed in as nature-like way possible, as in, eat it clean and move on because predators(or a human managnent analogue) the end result is a pasture that is healthier, with more dense growth. And yes. Carbon negative, as in, removing carbon from the atmosphere. That pasture requires less active investment, no pestisides, or herbicides. The Cows will happily eat bug, small birds and rodents. And will be healthier for it.

I don’t understand the animal harm arguments about regular plant farming. The cows and chickens aren’t being harmed if we use their manure as fertilizer. It’s a fact many of the animals are in captivity, but it’s not like for the purpose of their manure collection LOL. What’s the deal with the fish and bone meal soil additives?

Video well done. I live an hour away from the Pasadena Sage and have driven there many times to have great vegan food. I am so disappointed with this and now I wont be driving there any more.

I can totally see that there are people who care enough about animals, even raised vegan, to eat a vegan diet, but not care enough about animals to be seduced by profits and social pressures. I would say that she was vegan at one time but not really. Just like someone can be anti-racists until a black person moves next to them or dates their daughter. You can claim to be a certain type of person until your morals are tested.

It's possible to do regenerative farming in a vegan way. KZbinr Hermann goes to a vegan farm in Italy and they show how they "regenerate" their soil with their composting of plants. If the owner wants to change their business model, that's their choice. Trying to keep their current customers by fence sitting seems incompatible with said choice. If their current customers want to continue patronizing, great. If they don't, that's also great.

Vegan geography student here and kinda neutral on the subject, it wouldn't be neccessary from an ecological perspective but ig they do have to make money. Do you have any better ideas for a business model involving grazing? /gen I do know an organic farm with sheeps that graze on one half so the wool can be the fertilizer for the plants on the other half, but it's a smaller one and ig it's not realistic for every bigger farm

The point was making was that if one cares about the environment and the treatment of animals, why would breeding and selling animals for food be necessary to improve the environment other than profit. The claim is often made that regenerative grazing is better than vegan diets for the environment and good for the animals. What is the advantage of eating the animals even if regenerative grazing was better for the environment. Couldn't the animals live on the land and rotated without being slaughtered? The justifications going from veganism to regenerative grazing and eating animals don't give you a better environment or better treatment towards animals.

They should rebrand to "Sau Sage Bistro" so it communicates clearly: "I want to sell meat now because it sells better than tofu". The "Sage Regenerative Kitchen" is just terribly convoluted, like the argument that you need to continue animal husbandry because you need to use manure for growing veggies. Rotate your f* crops smarter and you will be fine.

Regenerative agriculture is unsustainable when you look at thermodynamics. 95% of the food you give a cow for example is wasted, as an the animal moves about using the food for energy. So it’s highly wasteful, as well huge water usage for farm animals e.g it takes a 1000 litres of water to obtain only 1 lb of beef.
