It’s so interesting how, without necessarily realising, people have internalised a whole host of arguments against veganism without ever taking the time to actually substantiate them. Veganism is one of those issues which everyone has a set of beliefs around, yet so few people actually scrutinise their arguments or think about them deeply. Do you think Geoff will make changes? I will never understand how plants have feelings but fish don’t Edit: come on y’all ur smarter than this.. When we get injured, our pain receptors release neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters then transmit a signal to the thalamus (part of the brain). The thalamus then sends that signal to other areas of the brain to be processed. Once the brain has received and interpreted this signal, the brain sends a “personalized pain signal” (simplest way to describe it) back to the nerves-It is *only now* that you will feel pain. *You’re brain is what creates the sensation of pain.* Everything else simply gives your brain information so that your brain can decide when, where, and how intense you should feel the pain. Saying plants can feel pain is like saying plants can have kidney stones. You need a brain to feel pain, and you need kidneys to have kidney stones. Not to mention that they also need to be sentient in order to *experience* pain. There is absolutely no reason to believe plants are any more sentient than my skin is. And honestly sentience is what really matters, the ability to feel pain is just an added reason why hurting animals is double fxcked up.

That’s not really their argument; if plants have feelings then vegans are hypocrites. Never mind that mammals are infinitely closer in their experience to that of humans, and can feel orders of magnitude more pain compared to plants, no matter how you look at it. As long as vegans are wrong, meat eaters are morally justified to do whatever the hell they want in their own eyes.

I think he deserves a lot of credit for the way that he assimilated the arguments and reached a conclusion. I doubt that he possesses the moral fortitude at this time of his life to actually be vegan as this means going against his family and peer group who presumably all eat animals and always will. But he has the potential because, like me, he is so appalled at the way animals are treated by the billion and you simply cannot buy any animal products in the grocery stores without knowing that you are funding and tacitly supporting that treatment. Giving up animal products is actually surprisingly easy when you remind yourself why you are doing it. The only problem to overcome is those social occasions and our meat eating culture. But it is slowly becoming easier to be vegan even in a backwards conservative (with a small c) State in Australia where I live.

Ed tried to summarize the Jeff's argument into "we can base our morality on the actions of wild animals" which was a strawman of his argument. What Jeff said was that there was nothing inherently immoral about eating meat given the fact that many creatures prey on others for sustenance and that humans once did as well. I think Geoff seemed like a very intelligent and nice guy. Much more educated than I was before going vegan in certain questions raised here. He had some arguments that needed to be debated. But he listened to Eds counter arguments and seemed to take what Ed said seriously. We shouldn’t call his arguments ”dumb” as I see some people write here. Remember like 95% of all not-yet-pro-vegans come equipped with similar arguments. It’s not because they’re dumb, it’s because they are taught to believe these things since childhood as well as through constant indoctrination campaigns from the animal-industry. Before having the great fortune of stumbeling upon a legend like Ed who challenges your unquestioned beliefs and can help you connect the dots, how is a non-vegan supposed to find the right way? It needs to be prompted. It won’t happen automatically. Please, let’s all help keep the vegan community nice and welcoming, so that people will feel compelled to join and be willing to associate themselves with being ”vegan”. This is the way 🤓😊🖖😎🚀

I stumbled upon your book and I read it. What got me the most was the impact we have on our environment. I already knew that the suffering of animals is terrible but to read about the destruction of our planet, that broke my heart. Furthermore, I wasn't aware of the exploitation of other humans in the food industry. Unfortunately, I'm still on my way to veganism since the change isn't that easy for me. But I became vegetarian and try to get vegan options whenever I can.

@@rondarkman. I fully understand where you are coming from. You feel attacked and you think people who don’t want to eat meat are woke lunatics..I get it. Have you ever considered though that you might have been brainwashed by what you see on TV, just like those "woke maniacs" you want to make fun of? Throughout history, we've witnessed horrible events depending on the time people were born into. Today is no different. In the past, people endured slavery, Nazi atrocities, and persecution for their sexual preferences. Currently, we need to address how we treat all other life forms that we share this world with. The American Dietetic Association states that a vegan diet can lead to vibrant health, adding 10 more years of vitality. Who is filling hospitals with health issues like diabetes, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol? Is it people who eat fruits and veggies? Nope! It’s people who consume dead bodies. Please consider that it’s possible that you have been brainwashed by the meat industry. In the past, commercials like "Milk Does a Body Good" were popular, but today, many are turning to plant-based milks due to concerns that indeed milk actually does a body bad! As a self-proclaimed "soy boy," I'm living proof of the benefits of a vegan lifestyle with flawless blood work and excellent health. True strength lies in being a leader and thinking for ourselves, rather than blindly following the crowd. So, in conclusion, let's each think independently and make informed choices. Most plant consumption doesn’t kill plants. Fruits, nuts, and seeds are a symbiotic relationship between plants and animals… and grains and beans are seasonal plants that complete their natural life cycles before being harvested and resowed.

It’s the non-judgmental and open discussion that allows for critical observation of the choices we make in food, like consuming meat, that makes it so easy to begin eating plant-based foods. Let's remember that the hook for this kid was the images he had seen of factory farms. If people just open their eyes and look, they can make a start; they just have to realize there is no meat, dairy, egg, or fish consumption without cruelty and suffering-- there is no kind way of engaging in animal agriculture, and there is no humane way to kill someone. When they see a factory farm, they are looking at their consumer dollars at work.

I completely agree that factory farming is awful. I was vegan for almost 7 years. Could never have dreamed to eat animals again. But then my health took a turn and found out that there are so many former vegans who have had their health deteriorate but feel better after eating an animal based diet again. Now I eat pasture raised as much as I can. I do think there is a moral justification for eating animals if you need to. I think Ed’s argument (and something that I agreed with for so long) is that we only do it for taste and that’s not always the case.

It really isn't difficult being vegan in cities or towns around the world. However, it is a little difficult once we get into the countryside of some countries, such as Vietnam where there are no vegan restaurants unless I travel 45 minutes one way and that kind of defeats the purpose. So, I have found that I needed to learn to cook things like tofu and learn how to roast peanuts and grow my own vegetables. Yes, it takes a bit of effort, but in the end it's all worth it.
