On today's episode of veganizing Filipino dishes, Janelle and I tackle Sinigang! Sinigang is a tamarind based soup that has lots of savoury tangy flavour and is full of vegetables and greens. Typically served with rice and traditionally made with pork, this version is made with roasted soy bites to achieve a similar fall-apart pork-like texture in this soup!

Why isn't your logo using the Vietnamese flag? - Actually I use the South Vietnam flag because it represents Viet Kieu (Vietnamese immigrants after the fall of Saigon), my parents were both boat refugees before immigrating to Canada. My logo combines two parts of my identity: Maple leaf because I'm Canadian, and the South Vietnam flag because I'm Vietnamese :)

There is a Filipino sinigang tamarind packet you can get that is vegan friendly. I think it may be called mama Sitas (not sure) but check the ingredients

wow, this is so similar to the south Indian sambar. Only for protein, we don't put meat, we use lentils. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Great recipe! I'm definitely gonna try this soon. I guess the best way you can get the tamarind pulp is to dilute it in the water you're cooking and get it to mix till you can strain the seeds. I hope this helps!

There is also a tamarin candy in the Philippines. It's sampaloc coated with sugar.

Thank you for showing me how to use tamarind paste! I've always wanted to try but I'm too hesitant to get because I'm not sure how to use it. I'm reaaaaaally trying to broaden my horizons and try all different types of sauces and spices.

My girlfriend lives in the Philippines and I told her I am going vegan here in the US. She didn’t understand it. We even got into an argument about it. She was offended. I then shared an article (that she probably didn’t read) with her last night about a vegan movement in PH. She was telling me about making banana soup, and I was like “is there a vegan version..?” and she said vegans are terrorists 😂… but then I looked up vegan sinigang and here we are. We have known each other for like 6 years and just started dating this year. She is going to come visit this coming spring. I am not changing my diet, and I’m not expecting her to, but we want to cook for each other. I can cook all kinds of vegan dishes. I wanted to try filipino food, so this is a good start. So I hope she will cook this 😊

This looks yummy, but I'm wondering if Janelle has any mixed feelings eating this? I can't have sick-day food when well, as it tricks me into feeling under-the-weather by association. Maybe it's just me. TFP : )
