Black ice cream made with charcoal has been trending this summer, but vegan versions are hard to come by, so I make my own recipe and show you how to make black ice cream at home! While I don't know precisely how activated carbon is manufactured, but I do know if it is burnt organic material, it is by definition carcinogenic. The only ingestion use mentioned in Wikipedia for activated carbon is for a handful of fairly rare ailments including absorbing certain kinds of poison. The recipe might have worked better with brown sugar and cocoa for color. There is an excellent Korean/Japanese dish that would be pretty easy to veganize called Beef Yakisoba. In the traditional version, beef is marinated and tenderized in low-sodium soy sauce and meat tenderizer; then sliced thin. (This could probably be achieved by marinating Tofu in soy sauce.) Other ingredients include thinly sliced mushrooms, garlic butter, teriyaki sauce (slightly diluted with cornstarch water), and Wasabi (Japanese horseradish) (The only glitch here would be making garlic butter with vegan butter.) So, for one large serving, about 3 oz of the "meat" is saute'd in garlic butter with a small handful of sliced mushrooms. About midway through you add about a third of a cup of teriyaki sauce and about a rounded half tsp of Wasabi. The sauce should thicken around mixture, but not enough that the mixture is floating in gravy. Then you serve this over rice or noodles, and some steamed veggies on the side. Shredded cabbage and carrots steamed with a little water works nicely. For extra zing Siriracha is a nice accent.

I (and my tasting friends) did not love the texture from the charcoal. For the 2nd batch, I just used black food coloring. Problem solved. (I think all the store-bought food colorings are now vegan...the one I got certainly was)

There are , Sam. The brand is Nature´s charm . I know it from my holidays in New York. Nature´s charm offers vegan sweetened condensed milk from coconut -and new: From Oat. You can get it online. You are canadian, right ? So maybe you can´t get it in a canadian grocery store but alwaas online from the U.S. PS: Sammy-darling would ypu make vegan dulce de leche for me ? I tried and failed. With cow´s milk it works but with coconut it doesn´t. I would love to have you helping me Thank you !
