Thanks, Drew. I'm sharing this video on Bluesky. I'm no big fan of Elon (might have been a decade or so agao) and I've always thought that the Cybertruck is too stupidly large, heavy and expensive to advance EV adoption meaningfully, especially for crowded city streets. But there is still a lot of FUD about EV battery fires in general. This was a petroleum explosion, not a lithium battery one. The overkill bed floor on the Cybertruck actually kept things from getting worse in this bizarre terrorist event.

The firemen used a special fire blanket designed to snuff out an EV fire. Which then helped put out whatever was still burning inside since it wasn't a battery fire. Just some amatuer pyrotechnician that blew himself up. Looked like the plastics melted in places. Like the tops of the side rails either blew off or melted? I am most impressed by the SMC-CF truck bed; see a little bent up area by the top of the storage top lid. Which helped contain the blast. I think it is a very overlooked feature. It fared much better than the tonneau, but it is just aluminum. Even the tailgate liner looks pretty good. I hope Tesla gets to take a look at it after the FBI gathers more data. Maybe offer a little off a new one for the owner? I think the best way to look at it is that if it had been any other pickup truck in America, other, innocent people could have died.

Can you point me in the direction where reputable media outlets are saying the battery exploded? Within the first hour of this explosion, the reports were it’s a bomb. Was this video taped within the first 30m of the news? And there has been no manifesto recovered as I know, so how can we speculate his intent?
@florianschneider398223 күн бұрын
Every headline claims the cybertruck exploded.
@ibthmann23 күн бұрын
@ ok. But where are the headlines pointing to the battery being at fault? The truck exploded because there was a bomb in the bed. To say the bomb exploded instead of the truck is semantics. You put a bomb in a car, it explodes.

1:13 another detail with EV batteries is that Tesla specifically has been “involved” in a VERY LIMITED number of fires, 0 of which have been directly linked to the vehicle being the cause of the fire, rather simply being present in the fire.
@TroySavary23 күн бұрын
Obviously you have zero clue what you are talking about. Tesla cars have been in over 200 fires. There have been 2 fatal Cybertruck fires already and multiple fatal fires in other Tesla cars. The fact the electric door releases stop working once the battery goes has trapped people in burning Tesla cars when they would have lived otherwise.

OK, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt in that this video was probably written & filmed earlier in the day during a very fast-moving news story, but even so, you really need to step back a bit from your extreme narrow focus on EVs and realize there are other things going on in the world that an extremist suicidal nut job might be more obsessed with than any sort of pro or anti EV stance. No, we don’t know yet for sure what point the Vegas car bomb guy was trying to make, but given that he did it in front of a building with Trump’s name plastered all over it, that what Elon Musk is currently constantly in the news for is for his deep involvement with & influence on Trump which at this point seems to be making pretty much everyone, across the political spectrum, deeply uncomfortable, and that this incident is one of a pair of near simultaneous terrorist incidents sharing many commonalities, and that the other perpetrator made sure to make clear that his actions were explicitly in the name of ISIS, I think it’s pretty Goddam clear at this stage that the safety of EVs is not the issue that either of these nutjobs was driven by. And while we don’t know yet to what degree these incidents were connected, from the commentary I’ve seen apparently ISIS attracts all sorts of disturbed individuals to its recruitment web pages, where they list all sorts of tips, tricks &suggestions on how to martyr yourself in a terrorist attack, so if nothing else it seems likely these two were reading from the same “How To” manual, which apparently currently includes the suggestion to rent an EV off Turro, pack it with explosives and go out & create mayhem with it. Does this mean ISIS believes EV’s are dangerously explosive? Quite possibly, they don’t seem to have a lot of geniuses in their ranks these days, but even then they wouldn’t give a shit beyond the misapprehension that an EVs supposed volatility might be useful to them in their goal to cause death & destruction. And finally, even the media should be cut a bit of slack here for their knee-jerk assumption that the battery must have ignited. After all, if it had been a gas powered vehicle that had been packed with explosives and set off, everyone would just naturally assume in their reporting that in the process the gas tank must have ignited as well, even if somehow turned out to not be the case.
