I gotta say, I greatly appreciate your ability to give criticism in a way that's sympathetic to the intents of the creators. I feel that these videos could be shown to the animation team behind Super with little outburst or hurt feelings. As someone who loves to analyze stories and video games like you do with animation, giving feedback in such a comforting manner is a skill I need to work on. Now, just for funsies, I'd like to bring up something with the episode quality graph you showed near the end. Wouldn't you say that 125's quality is higher than 126's, haha? Other than that, it is an effective graph. Edit: As for the story of this episode... I'm pleasantly surprised, at least with the second half. They remembered Vegeta's character arc. Changing the match-ups on the fly like feels both organic and does a great job tying Vegeta's arc with Topo's own arc. The call back to the blast from the Buu arc is extremely an effective contrast, showing how far Vegeta has come in both power and character. That said, Vegeta's resolution is a tad cheesy, and not in the good way. It's utterly simplistic. On top of that, I can't help but feel there's a missed opportunity to bring up Vegeta's thoughts on bringing Freeza to the tournament. That would have been a great way to transition Vegeta's emotional ties to his friend and family to Topo's destroyed faith in justice. As for the rest, weak and boring. A predictable formula we've seen time and time again, with no nuance to keep the audience on their toes.

That shot of Goku in his base form at 7:45 might be one of my favorite from Super. He actually looked irritated for once. It doesn't look anything like Yamamuro's work for the Blu-ray covers. The story was very flat during the first half and most of the second one too, but Vegeta's 'big' moment sort of overshadowed all of that for me. It wasn't too intense or dramatic, but it was fine considering who is the writer of this episode. I do consider it to be a significant improvement compared to whatever the hell 119 ended up being. The lengthy usage of BANK animation + flashbacks from Kai are the type of things that make me glad that this series will come to an end pretty soon. That's quite distracting when you watch these episodes more than once.

Filip Jeglic honestly im not surprised given this episode's writer, like on paper it all sounds good and i even thought that this episode was going to be great, but it was really bad executed (and this could have been the PERFECT way to eliminate Vegeta)
@Jegfil6 жыл бұрын
Probably, Toppo and Vegeta could both eliminate eachother, I think that would be nice. And it would be much better if they showed more about why they (Jiren and Toppo) changed their opponents...it felt so meaningless, that why I don't like it. I mean it would be much better if Vegeta saw Frieza and 17 struggling and he would come to help. But no, they just weirdly changed it, 17 and Frieza weren't even eliminated (no one form U7 was). I can't even explain it, it was so weird for me (like I said before).

This episode was terrible, narrative wise. Everything established last episode gets thrown out the widow and nothing has consequences. Last episode anything that touched Toppo got evaporated, this episode everyone is surprised throwing rocks at him doesn't work and Vegeta can safely grab and punch him without losing a hand. Beerus said last episode that Toppo needed to charge his hakai, this episode he spams it. Last episode a speck of hakai destroyed Freeza's death ball, now even 17 can hold the hakai back no different from how he would have handled any other ki blast. Not to mention, as you pointed out in the video, Vegeta's not-actually-a-selfdestruct-anymore-selfdestruct move he used unnecessarily when Toppo was several meters away from him and already badly loosing to Vegeta in a fist fight. Oh yeah, and Vegeta's already back to his new awaken form in the preview despite being "completely drained" and canonically not more than maybe a minute or two having passed. I'm glad Vegeta got a win finally but this was the wrong way to do it.
@Dfeneck6 жыл бұрын
TheBlueSpikes Nice man, you summed up my thoughts. Just feels like there's no consistency to any of this, its just writers doing there own thing each episode. Its fucking terrible. I can understand now why they're taking a break, something is seriously not right with the way they're producing episodes. Honestly, I've been an absolutely fanatical db fan all my life. I lived for this show. I begged life to bring back dbz when it was gone. And yet... This last episode was the wall for me. I realised that in its current state, it feels like nothing really matters any more. No continuity at all. So why should I care? Watch zeno bring back all the universes at the end and there be an entire arc without consequence. I'm done. Fucking Naruto produces much better story than this trash. Dragon Ball is a show completely based around power scaling, and they've fucking ruined it to all high hell. I don't know where anybody stands anymore. Vegeta's new form is a joke. He got a boost of power akin to the boost he got again just by thinking of his family. Not to mention it took no time at all to reach. What was the fucking point? Nothing changed but his colour. And his eyes look sooooo fucking stupid. Feels like a lot of the emotion is just gone. Everythings just speedy convenient plot. Kinda over dragon ball. They're killing it. What a sad time it is for dragon ball fans.

Vegeta could touch Toppo because he was using his hakai too much, thus not being able to use it to defend himself since he didn't have enough hakai left in his hakai reserve Nah you're right it's bullshit
@lev62366 жыл бұрын
TheBlueSpikes Firstly, any matter that touch Toppo would evaporate. Vegeta has God-ki plus a stronger form of Blue so one could use the argument that his god ki allowed him to touch Toppo. If you’ve noticed, they’ve never actually made 17 or Frieza have contact with Toppo (I do agree that the rocks plan was pretty stupid). Secondly, 17 blast barely hold back Toppo’s hakai ball. You’re acting like they had a beam struggle similarly to the one they had in 126. It did destroy his beam in less than 1 sec. And to compare 17 to Final form Frieza is hilarious. You can’t compare that death ball to a beam of someone who fought evenly with SSB (albeit, both were holding back) Thirdly, Toppo still has to charge his hakai blast. He still can’t go “Hakai” without forming the destructive ball. That’s what Beerus was eluding to. Beerus and Sidra can destroy things without charging the ball. Toppo has to. Fourthly, not defending that one. Super is ending so expect a lot of “throw back to Z” type episodes which is why they made Vegeta do that, as you said, unnecessary attack. And finally, this is poor writing and execution but if you’ve been watching the Tournament of Power from the start, you would have realized that Goku is the number one suspect for the completely draining stamina/power thing and be relatively ok the next episode. Just look at the times he went UI and look what happens the next episode or 2 after that. It’s nothing new to be surprised about.
@PipoPoppy6 жыл бұрын
Hey! An episode that looked legitimately good after a few pretty weak ones! I really enjoyed the second half's storyboarding. I think a lot of the story complaints people seem to have are overblown, though. Writer consistency has been a problem all across Super, but the actual consistency and interesting parts are overlooked, whether it's because of the length of the arc, people just not noticing or some other reason, the ToP does have pretty strong consistency at points, especially when it comes to characters, but also actually some plot elements. Ultra Instinct is one of the better explained and foreshadowed powers in all of the Dragon Ball series as a big specific example. I've never watched DB for consistent and good plotting. Right down to the og series, I think it's kind of a plotting mess with contrivances, inconsistencies and asspulls everywhere. The original series and Z mostly have consistency in terms of writer voice - because one guy is writing it and it has the same style all across it. I think that's what actually might bother people the most. If you look at the consistent elements of the episode, it actually pays off several elements set up in the very beginning stages of the arc. Vegeta was set up going into this arc to fight for his family. It's about time we actually saw him think about them. It actually combines it with his promise to Cabba all across the whole arc. It's actually kind of the perfect final moment for Vegeta this arc and what he's been set up for and I think he can freely go out now. Toppo"s character arc was already set up during the recruitment stages of the story, too, with Kahseral's comment about how heroes shouldn't look intimidating, up until the previous episode of him stating justice is worthless. The fight even has a perspective clash that uses a callback as a legitimately strong character moment for Vegeta AND Toppo, not just for callbacking for the sake of it. DB doesn't really do themes. Arcs have little slivers of themes scattered here and there in some significant fights, but Dragon Ball just doesn't do that stuff, so seeing a legitimate perspective clash and a very relevant theme to the arc is very cool. Toppo is a version of early Buu arc Vegeta here. Vegeta is faced with a version of himself that threw away everything for the sake of power. This time, instead of turning his back to being a good person, Vegeta decides to stick to being one. Toppo loses because he couldn't stay true to himself and his values in the face of survival. I'd even argue him having no eliminations is part of the point, but that might be too much to assume. The theme even has actual consistency within the arc, with so many fighters sacrificing something to survive. From the Namekians fusing, to Gohan's silent vow after U10's erasure to keep fighting despite it going against his values and innocent people dying as a result, but they don't turn into brutal brutes. So I think the problem is that the writers do have the memos about the key points of the arc, but sometimes only connect them via the general idea in their own writer voice, rather than consistent direct references to each other. I've seen people talk about plot inconsistency which at points really is true, but I think the real problem is consistent writer voice. Even the powerscaling makes sense for once. Freeza could block Sidra's power and survived Toppo's destruction energy so a powered up Blue going all out should be able to take and block Toppo's attacks. Vegeta essentially saved Freeza and 17. He even used Toppo's established weakness when using the Hakai energy to attack him. You can see him not being very quick with it. It wasn't entirely just power-based. There's the complaint about Toppo's Hakai not evaporating everything, but he straight-up says he can't always use it because of the danger of killing his opponent. Liked the episode. It had the dumb stuff about the characters being too happy about Toppo being buried in rubble, Freeza's brief appearance was strange and Vegeta is back to Blue in the preview which is strange out of context (hopefully it's with 17 or Freeza giving him energy or at least some sort of explanation that is more grounded than "regaining stamina as he fights", which is the weakest bit of writing for the arc for me), but the character/theme stuff far overpowers that to me.
@SAsaiyajin6 жыл бұрын
PipoPoppy agree, the writer of this episode doesnt now how to storyboard visually in relation to the specific character. He literally just follows the plotpoints but doesnt consider the details, that a pile of rocks would obviously have no effect on ToppoGOD. "It doesnt conflict with the overal story, so hey".

I just wanted to point out something small but imo quite eye appealing: since Vegeta got this "ultra blue" form , they actually changed the color of his clothes, taking away that excessive "blue" he always presented when in ssb , and since this new "greyish blue" is pretty similar to his grey outfit from the revival of F arc, which was made specifically to match the ssb transformation(just like Goku's) it looks SO MUCH BETTER. Idk , it's a nitpick . but imo it just made him look so much cooler and better .

I thought the idea of the suicide explosion being survivable if you’re “strong enough” pretty asinine. The episode itself was weak compared to last week as you stated. I was proud that while watching I’ve been able to notice animation re-use and appreciate the story boarding (even if it kinda blew this episode but ah well.).
@SilverAlex926 жыл бұрын
But is the idea of the suicide kaioken times 20 being survivable (and spammeable) if your ki control is strong enough in super saiyajin blue isnt? Really its the same thing. Super saiyajin blue is all about ki control, not wasting ki, and not letting it run wild. Vegeta ascended that to even a higher level of ki control, with his bluer new form. Goku can control the kaiken, which is canon that would kill him in normal super saiyajin, so why is it so asinine for vegeta to be able to control his ki and blow up withouth killing himself in the process?
@JakeDeeJake6 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Arturo Pumpido because of the meaning behind both attacks narratively. The kaioken was made to be a power up with a cost. It still retains that to extent (much less in this arc but hey, I never said that wasn’t asinine). The point behind the suicide was that it was a sacrifice. Literally pouring your entire life force out to save others. The point was that the attack kills you. It was the first truly selfless act Vegeta ever committed. The idea that it was ACTUALLY just a super powerful move that can be survived with enough “strength” undermines the punch the attack has.

NINGEN!!! That intro is amazing. Swol Rolax is just genius, my friend. God, why do I love to hate Zamasu?!? I should just hate him for what he has done!!! But when it comes to the story, this was a mixed bag for me. Vegeta doing the Final Explosion was nice, and I liked the the explanation of why Vegeta survived. Jiren FINALLY getting some personality was welcome, even though it wasn't much. The biggest problem with the episode is Toppo. He was, in my eyes, wasted. Last episode, he turned into a God of FREAKING Destruction and was EXTREMLY hard to beat last time. In this episode, Vegeta could break through his defense was weird, to say the least. That and that he was eliminated the next episode after a big power up! Next week's episode looks great, with Jiren's Aura HAVING AN AURA, and 17 holding his own against Jiren looks great. It also looks like Jiren is finally taking SOME damage. The only thing I want, and I mean ONLY ONE THING, is that Frieza should be the one who wins the Tournament. We didn't see him in the ending shot AND he is nowhere to be seen in the Preview. They are clearly making it seem that way. It was a good episode with problems 7/10

Regarding your call for feedback on the story: I work as a consultant for screenwriters professionally and tend to get a bit bothered by the discussions of Super’s narrative. One thing that especially bugs me is when people claim this arc has no story or plot. In screenwriting terms, this is as inaccurate as the improper use of animation terminology that you have fought against. This arc has quite a large story if we go by the industry definition of “story” being everything implied by the on-screen plot. As for the plot, that too has had a healthy number of beats. The issue with this arc has largely been a lack of scope within the plot and near-total absence of narrative turns. That lack of scope I can somewhat forgive. Super seems to be copying the original manga’s structure of alternating adventure and tournament arcs. However, confining everything to one location and one “hour” of time makes things feel too small. Even the original tournaments took place over several days. Had this taken place on some kind of “battle world” and over the course of several days, the plot could have been exactly the same but with a much larger sense of scope. The lack of plot turns, though, is what really damages this arc. It is not a coincidence that so many people were trying to figure out the “twist” that would disrupt this arc. Would the Grand Priest turn evil? Would the tournament be stopped to lead to the real adventure? Would the final fight be something other than Goku and Jiren? These theories were due to viewers understanding that Toriyama’s plots generally do shift. Without a turn in the second act of an arc, the third act becomes procedural. The other universes had to go. They’re gone. Dyspo had to go. He’s gone. Toppo had to go. He’s gone. Now Jiren needs to go. You may also notice that this sense of narrative obligation only really set in after Kafla was defeated. The buildup from other arcs, coupled with the new element of Ultra Instinct, gave that a sense of flow. It is difficult to avoid an episodic nature with a step-by-step plot like that. This episode could have been better, but it was an uphill journey for the writer. There have also been outright bad writing at points, but nothing abnormal for this franchise. I still generally like this arc, but I have to ignore that it is a finale. I have been holding out hope that, perhaps, the final battle will be UI Goku against UI Freeza in a bonus match over who gets the MVP reward. That would transform this into a suitable climax for most of Super’s narrative.

You know the , when the show the flashback of Vegeta blowing himself up against Buu , The art seemed sooo awesome and it gave me goosebumbs . Super's art isn't bad but the old art was really the better one , at least for me it was .

I was hoping to hear your thoughts on the animation and art of when Toppo was being blown away by Vegeta’s suicide bomb attack.

Overall I enjoyed the episode, I think for the most part the story was good, the callbacks were smart, and the contrast between vegeta and Toppo's values, including (surprisingly) vegeta's pride being his advantage and not just his defiance. Story wise I would say the start was shaky, mainly frieza coming back again, that felt underwhelming when he popped up all of a sudden just to get the same treatment, but on a whole I think deadlines and other factors made the story for 119 'meh' I mean this was a good piece so I'd say 119 was a bad fluke for the writer compared to this.

I just hope they’ll continue giving Jiren more character. It’s about time too. It was a bit surprising to hear him call Dyspo and Toppo dissapointing, but we’ll see next week. If they don’t these final episodes will be very very... Probably not boring but Jiren won’t be the most interesting part of them, that’s for sure.

In terms of story what's rubbing me the wrong way is the seemingly lack of consequences of battle damage. A few episodes ago Vegeta was pretty much blown up by Jiren and was pretty much out. Then one episode later he's back up, gets a new transformation, and can fight as if nothing happened at all. This episode he blows himself up but survives despite earlier battle damage, and from the preview it looks like he's just back up in his strongest form next episode already. In a way, I miss the battles from the Piccolo arc and the Saiyan arc where battle damage seemed to last. You really saw the characters get worn out over time, but here characters can get overpowered for a while with seemingly little to no consequences. And Vegeta isn't the only one who does it. Goku doesn't even seem to feel the negative effects of the Kaio-Ken anymore, and he actually recovers from his first fight with Jiren by fighting with Caulifla and Kale instead of resting. Granted, it's not exclusive to this arc (I recall Goku Black doing similar things last arc, and Freeza standing back up after taking the Spirit Bomb back in Z is also up there), but it is very jarring here. I'm not that enthusiastic anymore, most of the characters I was invested in are already out and Jiren is just not an interesting antagonist to me. Apart from being strong there's nothing about him that stands out. No interesting or unique attacks, no personality, he's just so bland. I loved the stuff with Caulifla, Kale, Obuni, Hit, the U6 Namekians, and Ribrianne, but U11 just doesn't gripe me. Their characters just don't seem to work. U11 was the one universe where everyone was already on the same Pride Trooper team, but you don't see that in action. Jiren just sits back and does nothing while the rest of his team gets eliminated and seemingly doesn't even care. They've got that sentei theme going on, but the writers don't do anything with it. They don't go nuts with their theme like with the Ginyu Force. They had some great opportunities to introduce some subtleties and make the antagonists actually likeable, but they're not doing anything with that option, the Pride Troopers are just antagonists and don't really seem to do anything to step out of that role.

I liked this episode fine. Gotta say I'm getting tired of how intense the camera shake effect is on stills that are meant to convey dialogue rather than action, but if they fine-tune that a bit, the effect could be worth keeping. 17 running was my favorite bit of animation from this episode as well. As for story, it seems to me like they're setting up Freeza to surprise us with something in the near future. Note how he's absent from the final frames that show the faces of every other remaining character. He doesn't have very many episodes left to hatch his master plan, and I'm excited to see how that pans out for him.

Absolutely despised the writing in this episode. You could clearly tell it was written by the same guy that did 119. Just a disjointed mess on every front. From 17 thinking ROCKS would somehow work, to Freeza somehow coming back after getting shit stomped SECONDS prior, to the TERRIBLE Vegeta suicide callback. This was Dragon Ball writing at it's worst.

Not to mention, as pointed out in the video, Vegeta's not-actually-a-selfdestruct-anymore-selfdestruct move he used unnecessarily when Toppo was several meters away from him and already badly loosing to Vegeta in a fist fight. Oh yeah, and Vegeta's already back to his new awaken form in the preview despite being "completely drained" and canonically not more than maybe a minute or two having passed. I'm glad Vegeta got a win finally but this was the wrong way to do it.

Despite all of Supers vast improvements, I feel the best piece of animation from the episode was the flashback. I have been wrestling with this idea that nostalgia clouds judgement and appreciation for what is new, but when I see the scene in the episode alongside the current style of animation, it hits me clear as day that Super is not reaching those moments of quality. I appreciate at some level this will always come down to taste so to each their own! but this episode has clarified for me at least that it can't be nostalgia alone that makes me think Super just doesn't look as nice as Z.
