The flat angles again, yeah they definitely lowered the quality of the episode quite a bit, but the choreography was good and animation was decent too. I totally disagree about the music placement, I thought it was spot on, and that's about it.

Amir I think music placement was fine until the ui transition
@christianmarcotte40686 жыл бұрын
Amir it was way too jarring for me
@Manganization6 жыл бұрын
The music placement was odd as hell, simply because it was overused and felt like they were trying to cram as much OST as possible into the episode, and banking on them to gauge a bit of emotion when the actual narrative just didn't support it. If you want an example, this arcs' version of "desperate struggle" played during Goku vs Jiren (the one you hear during the Kefla vs Goku battle), but it was such a short scene, it made you wonder why they even bothered putting it in.
@angrydaniel29056 жыл бұрын

When you spend years learning about something, let’s say how movies are made. You learn how all the effects work and how death scenes work ect. Once you see all that you can no longer see movies the same way. While watching the movie all you can think about is the work that went in to create the scene and how fake it is. I feel like that’s how Ajay is with anime. He is able to look way deeper into episodes than we are. Majority will say this was a 10/10 episode amazing all around. But we don’t look at it critically. Ajay does, give him some slack and stop being so toxic. I did love this episode though lol.

Did you just actually argue that scenario continuity and consistent art direction "aren't the point of the episode?" Jesus christ dragon ball fans really do have the lowest expectations possible. No wonder this series is destined to be forever rushed and mediocre, the fans are just fine with it lmao.
@Vargles6 жыл бұрын
Yes but the problem is Jiren's and Goku's hits had no weight to them either. Felt like they were slapping each other around. The only hit that kinda felt heavy was Goku's UI hit and Jiren's blows on Goku before UI, that's it. Shit episode. An episodes quality is the sum of its parts not one aspect. If you wanna keep your standards low you do you. If you have to completely destroy continuity to make a dramatic impact you simply suck at your job.

I tend to agree with you on this one. The smoke was gorgeous, the artwork was quite polished and there was even some interesting footwork to look at. Other than that, not much in the episode actually moved. I can't shake the feeling that this episode was just a bullet point on a checklist in the grand scheme of things. "Eliminate Vegeta, bring back Ultra Instinct" and that kind of bugs me. I feel like some detailed action could have acted as a centerpiece of the episode to elevate some of the lackluster elements. Too bad.

That intro...damn 😂. Now onto the episode, i actually liked it, even thought, you're right, the direction wasn't really good and the execution as well. But for me, this is like, THE WAY A VEGETA EMOTIONAL EPISODE SHOULD BE WRITTEN. Ep 126 was a real disaster for me even thought it looked so good and damn those great storyboards, i feel that while in #126 the emotional moments felt cheap as if they were added to the script just because; here i actually feel that these scenes were actually meaningful. Hell, while in that episode the emotional conflict between Vegeta and Toppo felt really god damn stupid (making Vegeta look like a big hypocrite which made me wish for his defeat); in this one it's actually well handled and makes complete sense. On #126 Toppo was somehow antagonized by everyone including his own team mate just for throwing his ideals away to protect his universe which actually makes sense given the fact that defeat means erasure; at the same time we got a stupid scene with Vegeta babbling " you have no pride You loser" when in BoG he did the exact same thing (throwing away his pride) to protect his family (which was good development for him), then powered by the power of friendship and love Vegeta suddenly uses a suicide technique with the episode making a big deal about it as if that scene was like the second coming of Majin Vegeta vs Buu; and what happened next? He survived. On the contrary, in #128 the conflict makes sense because current Vegeta is full of emotion and cares a lot about his people while Jiren gives 0 fucks and doesn't care about anyone, Vegeta is able to trust in other people, which he demonstrated by giving energy to Goku and fighting first to give him more time to rest (and he does all of this while accepting that he failed); and Jiren thinks that all that kind of shit is worthless (which makes sense given his backstory). Funny how the good storyboarded episode is the one i hate and the not so good looking episode is the one i like, what are the odds.

The complete focus on the animation side of the product and less on the narrative side will make a casual viewer see you as cynical or having too high standards. Pea brains. I loved the episode, I understand your POV and actually agree with a lot of what you said regarding the inconsistencies in tone and the overall lack of polish with the storyboarding .The 129 preview looks stunning compared to some of what we got this week. I'm under the impression this episode is being so well received because it was a massive moment for Vegeta in particular, and we got some more context behind the motivations of Goku and Jiren. The polar ideologies they have regarding trust and what it means to gain power/fight for what you believe in

I always look forward to your reviews, because it shows me such a deeper world than I comprehend. You're totally right that upon first watching it, I thought it was pretty cool for Vegeta(even if he's just 'jobbing' again.) You're absolutely right about the composition and weak frames though. And though the art/animation tries to make up for it, upon review it makes it look weak. Like Toshio's script is trying to make up for all of the other lackluster elements and there's not much a script can do to cover up weak presentation. As far as it being overdone with Vegeta's flashbacks and monologues, you're right that context can make all the difference and I feel like it did here. Vegeta's really not trying to 'win' this fight, but rather Vegeta refuses to give up on himself, on his team and his universe. It's a really emotional way of looking at Vegeta's struggle and to see just how selfless he is. The Script tries to convey that with Vegeta's line: "Even if I can't win, Universe 7 will." And then seeing Vegeta fall and cry for failing to uphold his promise really hits the feels. The way his hair is falling back as he weakly extends his hand to give Kakarot his last remaining ki is the most graceful exit Vegeta could ever have, as it perfectly represents the proud Warrior Race he hails from as well as the trust he has in Kakarot. But also, that ki beam has more significant meaning than just Vegeta. It symbolizes that it's not just Vegeta, but everyone on Universe 7 believes in him and that belief itself is ki as well. At least that's how I saw it in the epic flashback(which was beautifully and wonderfully colored to show that all of these thoughts and their meaning is actually playing out on the subconscious level of Goku) It's a shame it'll be lost on everything else, but Toshio's Script did deliver. You can't take that away from him. Flawless Script.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed that they changed how SSB Goku looked like when he was charging to attack from the preview from last week of this episode and the episode itself.

Yea, I agree. The emotional beats just did not land for me at all thanks to the very poor direction. I feel like an emotionless asshole because I'm just sitting here with everyone in the fandom around me going on and on about how "deep" and "emotional" this episode was...and I just feel absolutely nothing.

For me, it felt like the tired board almost reflected Vegeta's tired state in the first half

I agree with everything. I liked the hand-to-hand combat and martal arts, and there were some good scenes with Vegeta and Goku's flashbacks/reminiscing, but other than that it fell short for what was supposed to be Vegeta's sendoff. I guess I was just expecting more impact throughout the episode. It's kind of the opposite of episode 113 (I think), where the art and animation was questionable but everything else made up for it and turned the episode into something enjoyable.

That intro was fucking excellent. Also I liked the episode, but I agree it could have been better and the points you drew were all very valid.

From the Perspective of someone who enjoyed the episode a lot, it's good to see your critical thinking on this one. I can see why you're not satisfied, but I was just happy an episode dropped on my birthday. I felt for vegeta hard, though.

First off, I enjoy your content, and whatever your opinion is about super wont change my view of you and your channel. Secondly, I have a question... I, for one, did enjoy the episode to a degree but I was unable to see those repetitions and flaws that you were able to see the first time I saw the episode. (heck, you even compared it to the Res F arc). But after all that, I still think it's a pretty alright episode. So the question is that am I a fool for not noticing these things that you mentioned?

DBS is a weekly battle anime and not everyone is watching to be as critical as Ajay. You don't need to know why you enjoy something to enjoy it. If you do not find specific elements repetitive then that's like, your opinion man.
