To answer your confusion (no spoilers here) regarding Sherrezade: she doesnt show up in Aladdin, she's a folklore character with "a thousand tales" that was mentioned in Friend like Me. She's the teller of Tales of Arabian Nights, which includes the original non-Disney version of the Aladdin story, which Disney based theirs off of. Notably, all of the characters have names that Disney hasn't technically copyrighted - Ja'far, the Princess (notably not Princess Jasmine, as that's Disney material), a djinn (the original term for a genie), etc.
@book_Emmy3 ай бұрын
And she's also mentioned in "Never Had a Friend Like Me" in the og animated Aladdin
@leoweinreb99203 ай бұрын
She's not just a narrator for that collection of stories (Arabian Nights or 1001 Nights), but has a really interesting story in her own right which frames the whole piece. She's the consort of a King who plans to execute her the next day, but she tells him a different story every night and always stops right before the end, so that he has to keep her alive the next night to hear the ending, after which she immediately starts in on the next story.

I am soooooo excited for this and can't wait for more. Scheherazade is only mentioned briefly in Aladdin. When the Genie sings "You Never Had a Friend Like Me" there's a line that says, "Well, Ali Baba had them forty thieves, Scheherazade had a thousand tales." This is in reference to Scheherazade having to tell a Sultan 1,001 tales so he wouldn't kill her. These became the 1,001 Arabian Nights in which the story of Aladdin was one of the tales. At the beginning of the Disney movie, the vendor sings Arabian Nights . . . before telling the story if Aladdin. Anyway, that is where she comes from and how she is connected. I also just want to say that this parodies Aladdin and Wicked, but also references other movies (Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Little Mermaid, etc.) as well as the Disney company. The letting go of the 2D department, the Disneyland/World references, the contract with Pixar (also Prince Achmed references Toy Story, Finding Nemo/Dory, Wall-E, the Incredibles, etc.), and more to come. Just pointing that out as well. Can't wait for more. 🙂

To answer your initial question: Aladdin's music is written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and the two of them have written some of the best musical music of the last 50 years, both on Broadway and in Disney films. However, while Aladdin's music is very special to me, I think The Lion King is a better movie with a more compelling story. To answer some of your questions: - Twisted is mainly a parody of a few things: Aladdin, The Disney brand, and the "villain is secretly the good guy" trope popularized by Wicked, the Wizard of Oz subversion musical on Broadway. Incidentally, after Starkid released Twisted, Disney started REALLY leaning into this trope themselves. Maleficent came out about a year after Twisted di. - Aladdin is played by Jeff Blim, who you actually HAVE seen before! He has a cameo in A Very Potter Senior Year as Aragog, and he sings the 'Get in My Mouth' song in that show. - Sherrazade is played by Meredith Stepien, who does indeed play Hermione in A Very Potter Senior Year. Sherrazade is not a character in the Aladdin movie, but her name is mentioned in the song 'Friend Like Me' (Well Ali Baba had them 40 thieves, Sherrazade had a thousand tales) - The actress who you refer to as Malfoy is named Lauren Lopez - Jasmine is played by Rachael Soglin and this was her first show with this group! Some additional trivia: - The music in Twisted was written by AJ Holmes, who plays Gilderoy Lockhart in Senior Year and helped write a lot of the music in the Potter parodies. The lyrics were written by Kaley MacMahon, and this was her first time working with the group. - Starkid were very careful with this show because they wanted to spoof Disney without technically infringing on copyright law. This is why they never mention Jasmine by name (people only refer to her as the Princess), and why they say Djinn instead of Genie. This is because Aladdin is an old fairytale, and so the names Aladdin and Ja'far are public domain, but Jasmine and the Genie are copyrighted Disney characters. This is also why there are some songs that sound REALLY similar to classic Disney songs without actually ever using the same melody. They were successful in this goal by the way....today they're actually able to sell the rights to Twisted to other theater groups, and local productions of the show have been put up all over the world. Thanks so much for this video! I've been looking forward to it ever since you finished A Very Potter Senior Year, and I'm so excited to see part 2!

@seansilence2697 Жыл бұрын
I think "The Golden Rule" is based on "Bear Necessities" from Jungle Book. The premise is based on Wicked (the premise being that the bad guy isn't really a bad guy), but it's a parody of Disney as a whole, while the main story is a parody of Aladdin specifically.

Okay, so the thing about the newest musical (Nerdy Prudes Must Die) is that it’s actually the third instalment in a series. Before watching it, you’ll first have to check out The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, Black Friday, and the spinoff series Nightmare Time if possible. Unlike the first two, the spinoff isn’t actually a necessity, though: the callbacks NPMD has to Nightmare Time are almost exclusively subtle references that hardly count as spoilers without proper context.
@itskimmay911 ай бұрын
I'd argue the Nightmare Time series (or at least some of the episodes) are necessary to understand who the Lords in Black are, who are quite important to NPMD, as the other musicals are pretty vague about them. But NPMD is definitely still an enjoyable musical without seeing Nightmare Time first.
@markerofthemidnight746911 ай бұрын
@@itskimmay9 Oh, yeah, the Summoning is totally an exception to that rule, but at the same time, wouldn’t you say that scene is even more impactful without the context of Nightmare Time? Yes, Meredith played Hermione in Senior Year, because after college Bonnie wanted to focus more on her family and working with her church. People toss rumors around, but she was at the 10aversary so there's no bad blood The book Wicked is more based on the movie TWoO and the musical is even more tangential, so yes this is a play on that show but by now we're like 5 degrees removed from the original Baum books

Here are the actors you'll recognize in this one from the Very Potter series: Jaime Lyn Beatty (plays some ensemble roles) - As you guessed, this is Ginny Jeff Blim (Aladdin) - He played Aragog in Very Potter Senior Year; he's actually a very major member of the modern Starkid shows (he writes the music) and AVPSY was one of his first Starkid shows Denise Donovan (plays Iago and some ensemble roles) - She was the woman at the orphanage Voldemort came from in Very Potter Senior Year Lauren Lopez (Monkey) - As you might have figured out, she played Malfoy Jim Povolo (Captain of the Royal Guard) - This is indeed Goyle Dylan Saunders (Jafar) - You are correct, this is the guy who played Dumbledore Meredith Stepien (Sherrezade) - This WAS Hermione in Very Potter Senior Year, good eye Joe Walker (Prince Achmed) - Yep, that's Voldemort Also, a lot of the songs ARE references, not just to Aladdin songs, but to other Disney songs: -Dream a Little Harder- parody of 'Belle' from Beauty and the Beast; similar melody, it's ALSO an introduction song where the protagonist is walking around town interacting with people, and they even make a joke about it by having him bump into someone who's dressed EXACTLY like Belle -I Steal Everything- parody of 'One Jump Ahead' from Aladdin; there's even a part that parodies the one part that goes "Riffraff, street rat, scoundrel, take that!" to "Hippie! Fucker! Slacker! Sucker!" -Everything and More- parody of 'Part of Your World' from Little Mermaid -Follow the Golden Rule- parody of 'You've Got a Friend In Me' from Toy Story; the content of the song doesn't really match, but you can hear that the melody of the song sounds VERY similar And there are even more songs that are references, but you haven't heard them yet so I'll let you discover those when you get to them
@amrys_argent Жыл бұрын
Follow the Golden Rule also reminds me a lot of What's Mine is Yours from All Dogs Go To Heaven, though that's a Don Bluth movie rather than from Disney. Of course, Don Bluth did formerly animate at Disney, and his films often get mistaken for Disney movies.

Yeah, there's so many different Disney references in this... Mostly to the era around Aladdin, I think... Like the 90s... The opening is based on Beauty and the Beast, which is maybe why Belle shows up and there's talk of Baguettes to Marie lol... And yeah, when they talk about ways they wish he might die, those were all references to how different Disney villains have died... It might be worth watching Aladdin again before continuing, but it's not essential... Still it might be worth watching all related movies after to see if you can spot the references... Actually, I wonder if someone's already listed all the references... Oh well... Ani is an amazing show for Star Wars fans, in my opinion... But you kinda need a basic Star Wars knowledge to really get into it... Plus it's not your normal musical... It's more of a comedy play with dance numbers... Starkid fans probably tend to prefer the musical theatre side a bit more, so it's less popular, even though it's great... Personally I'd say it's good not to leave the earlier shows until last... Especially if production quality bothers you... Certainly go back and forth between old and new, but you may not want to watch the early stuff last... That's my opinion anyway... It might be worth watching the Hatchetfield musicals and such together, including the Nightmare Time stuff, ideally in order, although it might be a lot in one go... Might be good content for next Halloween if you can get through it all quick enough lol. Either way, I expect you'll have a great time with this. It's certainly one of my favourites.

(And some of the jokes are yes, from behind the scenes, or like early KZbin Top Ten Thing You Missed! videos, like the hidden 1 frame SFX easter egg in The Lion King making people think it said SEX, or the original cover of The Little Mermaid DVD having a castle that kind of looked like a dick. Or the controversy about Jasmine being like 16 but so sexualized, etc)

I‘m so excited to see you watch this for the first time. Maybe my favourite starkid show after senior year. I really hope you‘ll stick with the early parody stuff first before going to the new original material. I feel it would be more logical to go that way and I‘m also kind of over the Hatchetfield stuff by now (that‘s the 3 newest full musicals plus the nightmare time shows). I definitely prefer the other shows

Starkid is my favorite thing in the world and I’m ecstatic that you are watching twisted. I could say a lot about jokes you didn’t catch, referenced and characters, my interpretations and all. But that would take too long. YOUVE NEVER SEEN THE WIZARD OF OZ?

If you are enjoying starkid you should start their Hatchetfield series. First The Guy Who Didnt Like Musicals, the Black Friday and then Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Its really really good, but you need to watch it in order to fully understand

"A whole new world" I think I love the most! And I agree... the comedy is better in Aladdin. I also like the Lion king my favorite Disney would sort of still be Mary Poppins and Pete s Dragon, though!
