Phil Vischer and I join Ken Ham, Bodie Hodge and Dr Jennifer Hall Rivera as they discuss Creator of VeggieTales gets things wrong about the Creator of the Universe and more during Answers News, broadcast live from the Creation Museum.

This was one of my favorite Paulogia in some time. When Phil Vischer linked flood geology and the young earth creationism to Ellen White...I had some crazy flashbacks to when my family lived abroad (we’re from the US originally) and we lived in a place that the only school which taught in English was a Seventh Day Adventist school. So for 3 years, I was taught SDA religious beliefs everyday! Yikes. Flashbacks. But what’s funny (to me) is that my family came from the Mormon traditions and it was a constant intellectual battle to be taught SDA theology during the week and Mormonism in the evenings and on Sunday. (I also attended a Catholic high school😆). It’s why I’m an agnostic atheist now. Not because of science...but because I was at the front line of all sorts Christian traditions (my best friends were a Presbyterian and an Assembly of God members) all fighting for the poor souls of the indigenous population. I saw missionaries from many different denominations and even in my young mind thought “well, they can’t all be true”....and then as I got older, it all fell apart. SDA, Catholic, and especially my family’s Mormonism!
@dancingnature
@dancingnature 3 жыл бұрын
That’s what happened to my youngest at age 9. He started asking me theology questions so I told him to get it from the horses mouth. The Catholic priest, the fundie minister and the Rabbi all answered his myriads of questions . He even liked all of them ( we aren’t atheist , Jewish , Catholic or fundie) and came to the conclusion that they were all just guessing.

VeggieTales (before Phil left) was bangin'. It actually helped me realize as a kid that some of the biblical stories were just that: stories. Although I didnt leave the church for another 15 years or so, this did assist me in breaking past the notion of "you cannot question any aspect of the religion." I'm sure this wasnt Phil's intention, but I'm appreciative of his work!

As a recovering fundie that grew up on Bob & Larry, I appreciate this conversation so much. It’s quite a juxtaposition to think of the “newsworthy“ story I’d heard way back when was that the VT creators were lauded bc they couldn’t be bought when approached to take their show mainstream as long as they cut out the God stuff... and now to hear this. What a finicky business the public face of religion is. I guess I’ve known that for a long time- I grew up in the same town as Jennifer Knapp and saw that worldwide backlash front and center. It’s different to see from this side though. Way different.

A lot of really good science came out of the Christian church as well, as the clergy were the only ones who had the time and resources to perform it. The anti-science Christians are not representative of the entire history of the church luckily. A lot of major discoveries and philosophical movements were originated by priests trying to understand reality.

It never ceases to amaze me how every person in every denomination of every religion is personally sure their own interpretation of scripture/dogma is the right one, even if they are literally the only one who sees it that way. Gee, it's almost like religion is one big Rorschach test of selfish self-affirming confirmation bias...
