Most modern cars today have disc brakes front and rear, but there are some still using rear brake shoes, this video shows how to replace rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders on a Chev Aveo, most cars in this class are similar in design.
Enjoy the video, thanks for subscribing, like and share, until the next time, Safe Motoring.

Great video, sir! I am currently fixing up my first car (Pontiac g3 2010) and I will be changing the rear brake drums completely and I needed to see a similar car. Thanks for this. Also, your accent sounds South African😲😲 Would you be from there by any chance? Just curious since, as a Nigerian, I have heard the accent from so many fine folks who visited my country😂😂

I'm an idiot and had a new cylinder installed but not the pads and popped the end of new cylinder off. I stuck it back together. My question is will the cylinder be ok or should I replace it.

Replace it if in doubt, it will save you more cost down the line if it fails.

I need to do this but my drum doesn’t have those screws to hold it in place and it’s very hard and stuck, haven’t been able to pull off. Not even with a pry bar. Any advice?

You have to adjust the shoes down 1st, there is a ridge worn on the inside of the drum, start by loosening the hand brake adjustment. Good Luck hope you manage ok.

The 2005 manual trans the lug studs are attached to the drum and the hub is built into the drum. There's no adjustment access from the rear (we should cut one to be honest) these get really stuck only way to get them off in my experience if the pad has lodged itself is to use a hub puller, make sure you grease the heck out of the hub puller threads if its a cheap one, had to order another one this year because the threads busted doing the other side. Aside from that everything else is identical. Hammer never worked for me. I'd of knocked the car off of the jack onto my steel wheel if I hammered any harder & also annoyed the neighbors since my car was stuck in front of their house.

When there is a ridge worn into the inside of the drum by the brake shoes over time it is difficult to remove, I normally adjust the handbrake all the way down and then attempt to remove the drums. @@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 ya no access port to the adjuster on mine, nearly busted the hold spring caps. Didn't seem to be a ridge on my drums, pads were half worn. I sanded the grime off of my drums they looked fine, lightly sanded as even as possible. I think when it freezes old pads stick to the drum instead of the original mounting service, pull off and get lodged especially on the model where the lug studs are attached to the drum. I have a puddle at the bottom of my gate although I don't think that is what is causing it, it's freezing related and brake shoe age related mostly as well as the wheel cylinder rubber age too. Those factors seem to cause the issue but mine is fixed for good now, wont have the car next time it happens is my guess.

Screws are there for the production line, as the rear hub assembly comes as a unit, so the screws hold it in place till the wheels go on. Yes not needed after, and can be removed and left out, or just leave in place and not tight, so that the drum does not fall off or pull loose if the drum sticks to the wheel rim when changing a flat. Also a tip is to use a small amount of high temperature lubricant, Copaslip or similar, on all those points where the shoes touch the mounts, on the ends where the cylinder operates, and on the picot point for the handbrake. Plus a little on the self adjuster, so it does not rust solid, a thin coat all on the threads to keep them rust free, and on all the ends of the springs, plus the contact points of the shoes on the backing plate. Small amount, in total no more than an ear bud tip size for all, and thin coats, keeping it free from the friction linings, and a tiny amount on the end of the handbrake cable, so it does not get water in there to rust the cable in the sleeve. Another place is on the threads of the bolts, or studs for the wheel, plus a thin coat where the wheel bears on the drum and the centre, so that the wheel does not rust fast. Good job there Gary, proper adjustment, great details as well, and you have a very good service provider, who did the rebonded oversize linings, and skimmed the drum, even cleaning and painting the outside for good looks for the customer. Most I see just skim, line and you get them back like you sent them, keep that shop there, they are excellent.

This is fantastic. Thanks so much for making this video. My 16 year old son and I just got one of these cars for him to learn manual driving on, and we're fixing it up together. The rear brakes are stuck and before I look at them this video is really helping giving an idea of how everything works. So helpful!

watched it all the way through to find the part where you adjust the hand brake cable (which was the part I needed to know). But the rest was very informative. Interesting to compare to my old Beetle, which has drums all round, and is quite a bit simpler tbh, especially when doing the hand brake.

The 05 that I have has no screws, solid rear drums, still comes off the same way. I used a hub puller to get mine off. Pry bar was a pain in the Arse well worth the investment. Right now trying to figure out how to remove that freaking 10mm bolt without striping it.

@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 thanks again for the video 👍 Believe it or not you may have saved one man's life with this video.....perhaps two. You see myself and my father did the job ourselves (neither of us mechanics).....and it got hairy for a while there.....but only for we found this video at least one man would probably be dead today 🤣 Cheers 🍻
