The new cylinder liners are far stronger than the originals. Not only are the walls of the cylinders thicker but they also stiffen the deck of the bock to handle the high pressure created by big turbos. The cylinders of open deck blocks will flex and cause numerous issues like piston deflection and head gasket failure. With more area on the deck of the block for the head gasket to grab, the less likely it is to fail and high boost pressures.

Why are the old cylinders ground out like that and then completely replaced? Also does a new set of cylinders affect the volvo reliability?
@Meatsweats_o_O
@Meatsweats_o_O 6 жыл бұрын
so those engines (which are in 2004-2007* s60r's) and maybe a few other models but i'm not 100% sure which. have weak cylinder walls especially at the top of the cylinder. As you're able to see from this video, there isn't anything around the top of the cylinder to give support. so they can move/warp under high stress, because of the PSI that is required to make high HP (these make around 300 bhp and will start to break around 450 bhp). So what this does, as you see, removed the top of the cylinder walls, then replaces them with something that is a lot stronger, like a fully forged steal, instead of caste aluminum. Thus, allowing more pressure = more glorious HP. This is a very simple explanation and i'm not a mechanic, i just own a 05 R, so i work on it. a lot.
@AutoRestore1
@AutoRestore1 6 жыл бұрын
Isnt the engine on the S60 R another Code? The B5254T is the 5 cyl, 2.5cc 4 valves per cylinder, while the S60R haves a 2.3 5cyl. Anyway, other part of the explanation is right haha, is an open deck engine and theres a lack of support for high pressure boosting, but is cheaper to produce, many Opels (Corsa and Astra OPC's), Fords (ST, New RS and the old one) and so many others, use the same kind of block.
@eformance
@eformance 6 жыл бұрын
The 5254 is 2435cc, not 2319cc, like used in the early 850R and V70R. The 2000 V70R had a 2435cc 5244T2 engine, commonly confused with the 2319cc engine. The 2319cc block is often used in performance applications because the parent material is essentially the same between the 2319-2521 IIRC, just the liners are bored larger on the bigger displacement engines. The bigger 2.5l engines also have problems with coolant flow through the block, there is a stupid stamped metal restrictor in the water jacket that impedes flow between the ends of the block.
@eformance
@eformance 6 жыл бұрын
Affect reliability? You mean make it *more* reliable? IMHO, the Achilles heel of these engines is the solid cam followers and the lack of a service interval for adjusting the valves. I seriously doubt Volvo even had part numbers for different bucket thicknesses.
@Sketch1994
@Sketch1994 6 жыл бұрын
3 reasons for the first pass...The liner is first bored out all the way down to remove it and make a probably clearanced hole for the new sleeve. At this point they can measure the precise diameter of the tool and set it correctly for the next pass which will make the mating hole for the sleeve, and this way they also make sure there isn't too much material left requiring a second pass.

Why would you drill the coolant passages in the semi open deck after the liners are installed? How do you get all the chips out?
@zackraiden5875
@zackraiden5875 3 жыл бұрын
Late reply but this is the answer for anyone who asks the same questions, for one drilling usually if done right causes most the junk to come out the top, only tiny chips would remain and those could be removed by flushing the block with a hose or by simply putting the block on an engine stand, putting it upside down then blasting with compressed air. Also they drill them after its installed so drilling doesnt affect fit between the block, if you drill something before putting the pieces together that drill could slightly push something out of place thus causing an interference.

All Volvo whiteblocks (aluminum block) are open deck design. Sadly the stock liners cant handle high levels of boost so this is literally one of the few options to make the cylinder setup reliable for high boost/high horsepower builds. There are a few different applications from Ben Kaplan, CSS, and Darton that can be used to make these blocks more reliable

Looks like they cut those garbage OEM nikasil-coated aluminium cylinders out and replaced them with cast iron cylinder sleeves like the ones they used back in the old days? I guess that makes this block actually reuseable and not a modern disposeable piece of alloy shit. I have only been able to get 250k-280k miles out of these newer Volvo nikasil blocks before the cylinders are junk, not to mention catastrophic piston meltdown when engine is overheated enough. Happens in the newer BMW engines as well :(
@eformance

Blame BMW for pioneering these blocks. I traded an 850i in on a V70R, still think the Volvo is less maintenance.
@eformance
@eformance 6 жыл бұрын
ElectronicRedPanda it was a 10yo $25k car with 66k miles, needed a bunch of new parts which were not available, some obscenely overpriced parts (rear shocks at $1200 each, because BMW refused to share part numbers between models back then), the build quality was crap. The Volvo was 1yr old and $39k. Today I bet the prices are evenly matched or favor the V70R, because the 850i was crap.
@eformance
@eformance 6 жыл бұрын
ElectronicRedPanda in 2001 Dinan was making replacement parts for these to fix the faulty factory parts. It had a leaky intake and worn out shifter, both items were out of stock and no time frame was give when they would produce more. The shocks were the same as the 7series hydro shocks, but because they didn't bear the same part number, any certified BMW place would refuse to install them. It was neat to have a V12 stick car for a minute, but 6mo of ownership showed just how poor their build quality was. It was also useless for carrying passengers, I already had a Mustang, Corvette, and pickup truck, I really needed a 4 seater. I sat in the Volvo and said "wow, this is the first new car I've seen in 10 years that doesn't make me want to throw up in my mouth", so I bought it. That was 2001, and the then-new Volvo cars were back to the "I want to throw up in my mouth".

Just to be fair, we do have a customer with a 1982 Porsche 928 with over 400k on odometer and original engine. He hotrods the car all of the time and I had to rebuild engine couple of years ago after he hydro-locked it. That was a very early example of alloy block with Nikasil cylinders and pistons which Porsche was able to make work after the Italians failed at it in the 70's. His engine had severe scoring and chipping in Nikasil because of piston/rod damage, but most of the coating showed normal amount of wear with no aluminium showing through. Recoating Nikasil cylinders and pistons runs about $12,000-$15,000 dollars last time I checked, so we ended up getting a used block. I don't know how Porsche managed to do it correctly, but I am sure that the 928 being one of the most expensive new cars in the late 70's and early 80's has a lot to do with it.
