I’ve read and heard some things about the S60R’s cylinders that are known for cracking when put under high pressure, and was wondering if you knew how much pressure we are talking before I need to worry about a cylinder crack? I really want to get my hands on a ‘05 S60R within the next 2-3 years as a daily driver. Lets say the furthest I want to go is a classic stage 2 tune pushing 350hp. Will I need to buy sleeves or shims for the cylinders?
@ELEVATEVOLVO2 жыл бұрын
We can't give you a direct correlation to what would crack cylinders. The two biggest contributors are over heating and/or making over about 400hp. Shims are a lot of work for minimal gain, and they certainly aren't a guaranteed fix.
@wiktorhogberg16462 жыл бұрын
They crack because of shitty tunes on micro-sized turbos that creates too high cylinder pressures on low RPMs. You don't need sleeves to make lots of power with bone stock R engines. Here in Sweden we make 500whp and some even 600whp on stock 2.5t and R engines. The key is having it properly tuned on a dyno by a professional tuner on E85 with an aftermarket ECU. Keep torque in the lower rev range as low as possible and don't run too much ignition. Shims between cylinders will stop water from passing through and boiling. Americans always seem to spend money on the wrong things. Sleeves aren't necessary until about 800hp on 83mm bore block (that is 2.5t and R engine bore). If you want to make more than that switch to an 81mm B5244T5 block. They can make 1000hp plus. Or better yet, a D5 block. It has taller deck height and a beefier girdle plate.
@zfuru2 жыл бұрын
@@wiktorhogberg1646 The stock tune must be shitty too. My block most likely just cracked at 118k miles. Forums are full of factory tuned cars cracking liners. I always have used 93 octane when available, and installed a do88 intercooler at 100k miles. Engine wasn't ever over heated under my ownership. I never pushed it until it was fully warmed up and always let it run to cool off before turning it off. It was a big mistake to manufacture this engine with 83mm bore.

@clonetrooper5763 жыл бұрын
@@dominikhejl5748 I would do all those performance parts at stock power for maximum engine longevity. That being said, the bottom end of most of the whiteblock engines is already forged, and the T5 is the most desirable engine because it has thicker piston sleeves than the R engine, so it can take something of 400hp, while the R engine needs reinforcement to match that, they are pretty much identical though

@alouisschafer72128 ай бұрын
I think Volvo should have kept their performance engines for the R models a 2.4L or used the D5 Diesel Block. Both are stronger than the 2.5L Block especially the Diesel due to the nature of Diesel engines (very high compression, high peak cylinder pressures, etc). I recon one could build a 400-500hp gasoline engine using a D5 block.
