Guruji A.S.Raghavan looks like a "great musician" and "Natya sangeet singer-Abhang singer" Dr.Vasant Rao Deshpande in Maharastra. Both of them have sung lot of Raagas in Hindustani as well as Karnataki. Vasant Rao born in 1920 and A.S.Raghavan born in 1928. Vasant Rao was famous in singing lot of Abhangs over Lord Panduranga, as well as Natya sangeet. A.S.Ragavan was famous in Thiruppugal over Lord Subramanya in all Skanda Temples all over the world. A.S.Raghavan got the opportunity to learn music from Sri Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, a great Pundit. Guruji not only compiled in one work the available hymns of Saint Arunagirinadar and titled it “Thiruppugazh Madani”, he also set to tune more than 500 of these in more than 100 ragas to melodious music and precise tala, matching the chhanda (meter) of these hymns. He also evolved a pattern from the verses of Thiruppugazh for conducting an elaborate ‘wedding function’ titled “Valli Kalyanam”, which signifies the finality of life in the unification of “atma” with “paramatma”. Besides Thiruppugazh, Guruji had also set to music the “Abhirami Andhadhi” and “Abhirami Padigam”, the verses on goddess Shakti. Guruji commanded instant respect and was a source of inspiration to hundreds of disciples and followers. People who did not have any knowledge of music, too, started joining the group. Guruji was held in high respect and reverence by devotees in general but also by saints and sages. He was blessed by Sankaracharyas of Kanchi and Sringeri. There was an instance when Sringeri Acharya listened to his Bhajan and blessed him. It happened at Calcutta where Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidya Teertha Maha Swamigal of Sringeri was to preside over a devotional program. Among the many program planned, there was a Bhajan also. When the Math authorities consulted Maha Swamigal in advance, Swamigal said: “Invite Sri Raghavan, the Thiruppugazh wizard”. Thus, the “Raghavan School of Thiruppugazh singing” spread and became well established in India as well as in places like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Singapore and the U.S. Guruji’s efforts had blossomed into a large “Anbargal” family which accepted the principles enshrined in Thiruppugazh as a way of life. Apart from the regular monthly Shashti and Kirtigai bhajans that are organised in a number of localities in the Capital, the “Padivizha”, conducted on the first Sunday of January every year, and the “Saint Arunagirinadar Ninaivu Vizha” organised on October 2 every year, at New Delhi’s Malai Mandir, are most looked forward to. On 17th May 2013, Guruji attained the Lotus Feet of Lord Karthikeya. At the age of eight, Deshpande's talent was observed by Bhalji Pendharkar who launched him in the role of Krishna in the Hindi movie Kaliya Mardan (1935). He obtained his PhD in Music. Deshpande performed classical and semi-classical music. He acted in movies like "Kaaliya Mardan", "Dudh Bhaat", and "Ashtavinayak". He had several commercial releases under his name. He created raga Raj Kalyan, a variant of Yaman without pancham. Deshpande learned from several gurus, refusing to tie himself down to a single school of singing He began his musical training with Shankarrao Sapre of Gwalior, a disciple of V. D. Paluskar,[6] in Nagpur. After this, he studied under various musicians such as Sureshbabu Mane of Kirana gharana, Asad Ali Khan of Patiala gharana, Aman Ali Khan and Anjanibai Malpekar of Bhendibazaar gharana, and Ramkrishna Vaze of Gwalior.[7] Dinanath Mangeshkar, a direct disciple of Vazebuwa, is said to have had the greatest influence over Deshpande. Deshpande is regarded as Mangeshkar's sole musical heir, having adopted his signature mercurial and dramatic style of singing. Deshpande's students include Chandrakant Limaye, Vijay Koparkar and Pt Padmakar Kulkarni, His grandson, Rahul Deshpande, is also a singer, and has also reprised some of his roles on stage and screen, such as Khansaheb in Katyar Kaljat Ghusli a film. A foundation, the Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Pratishthan, organizes an annual music festival, Vasantotsav, at Pune in his memory. The annual festival is held over three days during the month of January, where musicians and performers are invited to take part. During the festival, two awards, the "Vasantotsav Youth Award" for Promising Artists and the "Vasantotsav Award" for veteran artists, are given. In 2011, a three-day music and dance festival in his memory, was organized by the South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC) of Government of India in Nagpur. A film named Mee Vasantrao, based on the life of Vasantrao Deshpande, was scheduled to be released on 1 May 2020, but was postponed due to Covid-19 lockdown. He passed away on 30th July 1983.
