This film was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year. Priyadarshan later remade in Hindi as Khatta Meeta in 2010

I've come here after watching Khatta Meetha (2010), the Hindi remake of this cult film.There are only few movies in India which do not fare well at the box office but over a time become cult, Khatta meetha, a parody drama on the MNC & PWD of the nation is one of them, rather this movie is one of a kind and much ahead of it's time, only veteran filmmakers like Priyadarshan has the knack of doing such films which are remembered for ages and can be enjoyed on home media, these filmmakers don't bother about profit or collections at the theater run, and the audience who didn't turn up for these films during the release have been enjoying it at home, that's where you call it a 'Win of the Game' , a good and quality cinema, that's what makes the filmmaker more satisfied and happy than in those events when the movie gets humongous collections or that SUPER HIT tag and public forget it after sometime. Honestly it is not the collections but the heavy streaming of netizens is what makes a movie a cult. 👌👌👌👍👍👏👏

Khatta Meetha is actually one of the worst remakes by Priyardarshan. All actors who acted in that remake where acting like as if they were forced to act ; in simple words they were overacting. Whereas, Vellanakalude Nadu has one finest performances of National Award winning actors ; Mohanlal & Shobana.

@@appu3376 Yes i agree, Khatta meetha isn't the best works of Priyadarshan. Picking any movie from Malayalam for remakes is a tough task, owing to the natural and fine performance of artists there. But both films were filmed by Priyadarshan only so I'm slightly biased towards the version also though it flopped at BO.

Khatta Meetha is one of my favorite childhood films. I enjoyed it as a kid and even now as an Akshay-Priyan fan. I am a north girl but liked this version too with some difficulty in understanding it.
