I didn't take the criticism of Mindy self-inserting herself seriously until ALL of the mystery inc. gang wanted to hook up with her at one point or another in the show. I'd joke that she's got a harem, but it's more than a bit true. This is some fanfic stuff right there.

And I honestly cannot understand why the characters even found her attractive. Forget about her race and looks, those are absolutely fine (despite the writers' attempts to convince us that they're not fine. I'm talking about all those "Vermin Dinkley" and "you're not one of those hot girls, Velma" jokes). But she's not smart she's not kind. She's just mean. She always tries so freaking hard to humiliate others and bring them down. All the other characters, except her dad, would be better off without her in their lives. She doesn't even grow as a person! At one point she realized how awful she is, but after that she did not change her ways at all! So why are all these characters are attracted to her? What do they see that all the other people don't?

All the characters were trashed on, and though they paint Fred as an idiot who can't even take care of himself, he manages to be the only one I can tolerate and get a chuckle out of me. I hate that this show could have had so much potential. It was ruined by being extremely racist to everyone, terrible for representation, overtly sexual in a high school setting for an adult audiance(like.... just put them in college if you want sexual themes, i know its the least of the problems with the show but geez lmao). As a fan of the older scooby doo shows, movies(even the real life ones), etc, this show is a slap to the face to the original. The creator of this series just wanted to use Velma as a way of self inserting herself. As we all know shes a terrible person, hence why she made Velma a terrible person. @@FruitsChinpoSamuraiG yeah, you're right. I believe that most people can feel this sort of things. When the guys I watch on KZbin joke about such things, their audience knows very well that those are only jokes. These guys have been friends for a decade and they would never intensionally insult each other. And everyone can see it. When a joke about a race, religion or ethnicity is made in meanspirited, hurtful or insensitive way, you can feel it. And I'm very much against those kind of jokes. But if it was made because of a person's ignorance and if they recognized it, apologized for it and learned from their mistake, I don't really mind it. None of us are perfect and we can't just expect that all the people are well informed about every hurtful topic for every existing group of people. For example, as a person who grew up in Eastern Europe, I can't expect everyone to know that making bad jokes about Gulag is pretty insensitive (since almost all the people from around here have had a relative that was send there). If they weren't intensionally insulting and just weren't well informed, I won't be offended. I'll just inform them and move on. I say this every time they introduce a character that is hated by fans of a show series: It can and will be so much worse. Scrappy Doo was the bane of everyone’s existence and dumped on for YEARS after the end of Scooby and Scrappy Doo. Honestly, he didn’t bother me so much. Annoying? Yes. But I knew something that many people didn’t. It could ALWAYS be worse. And here we are some many years later and now we have Velma. Note: I also said the same thing when they introduced Poof and Foop in the Fairly Oddparents. People went on and on and ON about how much they sucked. Poof only said one word “poof” and Foop monologued like a Bond villain. They quickly threw both to the way side. What happened after that? They brought in the dang fairy dog and after getting rid of him after a handful of episodes due to unpopularity, they then introduced Chloe who was by far the worst of the three.

You can't be someone who happens to be X Y Z who is also a minority. You are just... a minority. You can't exhibit any other traits and you damn sure can't have any flaws whatsoever. They could always create their own stuff but it would never be mainstream at first because it's very specifically niche. Doesn't mean it can't be successful at the niche it fills but it's not the instant success like having your name attached to something already successful. The idea of 'representation' is insulting and disgusting. They never deserved it and never should have allowed it. Now if a character is created that so happens to have those traits IN ADDITION to being an actual person with all the hopes, dreams, virtues, flaws, fears, ups, downs, and everything in between, I don't think anyone would be opposed to that. You expect me, a straight white male, the most demonized class to exist, to feel any sort of empathy when I am given none? I'm expected to get the fuck over myself because no one is coming to my defense. Why should I do any different for you? Why should I be lumped in as this giant monolith and be judged by the aspects I cannot control then the content of my individual character? You asked that of me during the 'bad ole days' when you WERE actually being hunted in the streets and I agreed to. And now that the 'tables have turned' you don't ask this of me, you demand more. I think it's right of me to look back at you and call you and idiot for mistaking my kindness for weakness. You do not get to treat me as the demon when I agreed to treat you as an EQUAL human per a very reasonable request. That is what most of these 'representation' bullshit fanfictions are about. 99% of them ALWAYS turn out to be some kind of revenge fantasy because 'I had a hard life'. I've seen enough of them to know where they go and they always end up the same way. Representation has been tried and been found wanting. It always results in shit like Velma. Time to ditch it and go back to the old formula where we get the whole package then some garbage one note caricature hailed and celebrated as GREATER then sliced bread. As I also said, they want to write these kinds of stories, don't expect them to break out of their little niche holes because they only represent and very small percentage of the population. I feel everything was poorly executed. A story takes time to plan out and flourish. This just seems like Mindy didn't do her research on the subject panic attacks, or how to combat them. If the actor nails that, then they get the role! Period! Death Note Live Actors movie might have been not everyones favorite but the man who played L NAILED THAT ROLE. Scooby not even being there?? You can make things more adult but still have scooby there, though a part of me is glad Scooby isn't there bc they would've butchered him anyway, making him a cool cocky talking doberman or something. Obviously the OG designs reign supreme, but their characterizations were arguably the most important part of them.

The show had some abhorrent moments for sure especially in the earliest parts and it's got a lot of problematic elements even if you don't look at the race swapping aspect at all but I went through the first four episodes and honestly my thoughts were... it's just plain boring? I agree on the animation and art. It's not bad to look at imo and Im glad they took the animation aspects seriously and there are cinematic visual elements for sure. But it's really just not worth the hype it gets kinda like that High Guardian Spice show that came out awhile back. Though I will say i've enjoyed the creativity coming out of it from the fanbase. Some artists and animators here on YT have reworked the character designs (even keeping the elements of race swapping but giving it purpose beyond "woke points") and premises for them, how they'd do the show, redone scenes, etc and it's been really cool to see the amazing ideas out there! Would love to see that level of creativity and effort in shows on platforms like HBO so im feeling hopeful for the industry's future that there's a lot of people out here who care about great content and all the elements included it it :)

Like, hear me out, race swapping in Scooby Doo shouldn't have been that big a deal. Like Scooby Doo has had so many version and the characters have had do many personalities that race swapping (done right) shouldn't have affected the show. Velma was just trash and gross.

let's put it simple: if the only thing you can use as a promo of your series is race of your character(s), then you're racist; if sexuality, then homophobic; if gender, then transphobic etc., etc. being gay and non-binary, i also feel sick of this "woke" stuff trying to hype using us as a stonks machine

7:19 Velma was bisexual. Sometimes she was into guys, sometimes she was into girls. Pretty sure Fred, Daphne, and Shaggy were all straight. Though, Shaggy was kind of married to his dog and food. Those tended to come before girls. But every now and then he liked a girl. Fred and Daphne often seemed like a couple, though sometimes Daphne would go gaga for some cute guy. Sometimes Fred would get jealous... you know, I can't recall Fred showing much interest in anyone besides Daphne. Guess he was a bit of a loyal golden retriever?

Great video review. FYI - Velma has never been canonically gay. In Mystery Inc she does have a relationship with Shaggy. But the only same sex attraction alluded to was in a 2022 Scooby Movie where apparently she expresses a crush on a girl.

I just don't see why the show treats panic attacks and hallucinations as the same thing. Sure a hallucination might cause a panic attack but that doesn't mean it should be treated like as if hallucinations and panic attacks are the same thing Not to mention all the political jokes and racism just makes it a bad show in general and makes me want to avoid it

Velma has been dating guys and having guy crushes way more than the amount of time people trying to justify she was gay. Have people forgot she once crushing on Johnny Bravo in the crossover episode and even implied to be dating with him in the CN Bumpers? Or the Scoobynatural episode where she kissed Sam? Or any of the dvd animated movies with detective Beau, Ben Ravencroft, Winsaur as well as the live action movies where she dated Seth Green. Hell, she's been dating Shaggy in the Scooby Doo Mystery Begins and Curse of the Lake Monster and in the Scooby Apocalypse they both have a baby. I'll die on this hill that the obsession to retcon Velma into lesbian is dumb AF and that Johnny X Velma would make for a power couple.

Apparently, they have been trying to make Velma a lesbian but every time it gets to editing it gets cut. Which is why you see her in no relationship/no love interest. Or if she is, it is a heterosexual relationship. Besides, Mystery Incorporated tried to hint at Velma and another female character, Hot Dog Water, as an interest. Besides Bisexual and pansexual people exist. If this is true, I wouldn't be surprised. Film, animation, and shows, are in the end an industry that wants money. And having LGBT is a plot that is not about LGBT coming of age story getting cut. And not to mention back then when laws and regulations were being made to Regulate what film can show being gay was seen as illegal. While it is not anymore but centuries of discrimination are not something that can be solved easily. Take films adapted from comics for example. While comics may not always have the best LGBT representation there are plenty of them: Red Robin, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Loki, Deadpool, etc. These are pansexual/bisexual characters that have been adapted to live-action films/shows. But can you count a single love interest/relationship that was not straight? No. Because any plans of them were cut or "straight washed". You can have actors, writers, and directors, all up for just gay characters and homosexual relationships but if being gay is not "important" to the story then it gets cut or "straight washed". Margot Robbie has been pushing Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's love story for the big screen and quotes "I have been pushing that for years... I cannot tell you how hard I have been pushing for that." There are probably many iconic characters that have been attempted to be depicted in a homosexual romance but before they can make it to your screen it was cut and maybe even straight-washed. Even nowadays you see LGBT theme shows/films. Can you recall any show or film where the characters happen to be gay but are not important to the plot? Probably not because homophobia still exists. People can lose their jobs or have the show/film they have been trying to make get cut. Just because they have one character that just happens to be gay. It is an issue that still exists today. Seriously how many times have you heard an uproar of homophobic complaining about a gay couple in a film or a kiss between two girls that aren't even the main characters and don't even last two seconds? You would be surprised by the lengths companies would go to silent workers or cut films/shows just so they don't lose money. And the trouble writers and directors would go to give a LGBT character.

@@strangevol5264 While, yes, bisexual people do exist, it's abundantly clear that the more socially-driven people aren't trying to make her bi; they want her to be a gold star lesbian beyond reproach.
@kyleellis1825
@kyleellis1825 Жыл бұрын
All of those are explicitly done due to production mandate. Velma never had a romantic interest the studio didn't force. The Live Action movie tried to have her be gay/bi and the studio flipped out, making Jmes Gunn write a love interest for Velma. It's why her Love interest in the first movie has 0 relevence to the plot or interactions with anyone but her. He was reshoots only. People have seen queer coding in Velma since pretty much day one of the cartoon. It was always unintentional but it was noticed before the studios gave her dates to curb the 'Velma's queer" comments.

It's so surprising and wonderful to see a fellow Nigerian making this video😲🤩! So many of us grew up back home on these cartoons either on cable or DStv and we loved them, the humor, the writing, the irreverent comedy, genuine diversity (e.g. Hey Arnold) and we also loved how they had no divisive identity politics (wokeness). That's why whenever I see much of current western media that pushes divisive identity politics and the lie that they are "promoting diversity" I am disgusted.

Mindy is a hypocrite she's playing victim acting like everyone who dislikes the shows only hates it because of the raceswapping (which is valid) but she's also ignoring the fact that aside from the raceswapping Velma has many other problems like the bad jokes and terrible character personalities which is why it's also hated and her crying about racism is ironic considering some of the past shows she's worked on have racist scenes in them there's a scene in a past show she was in were she complains about having to perform surgery on someone whose black because she only wants white patients.

this show is so bad. I didn't even watch it. Just seeing Velma make a joke makes me hate the show. they could've make it better if FRED was the same strong handsome man from the original show. I will never forgive them for making Fred a spoiled rich brat. Out of all the adult shows I seen this one is the worst!!!!. I don't care about the races changed I'm mad how Fred is a spoiled brat!!!!!! when I saw Fred I fainted. THIS ISN'T MY FREDDDDD. Srsly they made panic attacks look like getting possessed! every single thing about this show is horrible. the art is good and the lighting. The designs are okay BUT NOT FOR FREDD?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? i can go all day talking about this......

Being horrible to people who were horrible to you doesn't make you any better than those who were nasty in the first place. I really never understand how fighting back with vitriol made you have the higer ground.... it doesn't, it makes you look bad. Change doesn't come from being arseholes to each other, unless you want to make the world a worse place. That's all Mindy seems to think is funny and it's not. (Seriously I come from Australia where our humour is darker than most, however we also know how to take the micky out of ourselves. Mindy has zero idea how to even do that 😅) How to remake a show right: watch Thunderbirds Are Go. Sure, still aimed at teens but it is still very faithful to the original source material despite changes and making some characters have so much more personality than the original show let them. Shows that do this well never get the air time they deserve.

Mindy shouldn't produce anything, she made this show called the Mindy project, and it's practically Velma just minus the mystery side plot which was supposed to be the main storyline and sexualizing teenagers. Supposedly more funny (due to my guardian laughing at it a couple of times) but still shows how much of a jerk Mindy is. Tbh episodes 5, 6 and 7 were pretty decent in comparison to the rest; I almost forgot that Mindy voice acted Velma in those episodes. This show had a bell curve in how good it was(a kinda flat curve albeit), they actually focused on the mystery in those episodes and was alot more show than tell, while the others could be listened to like a podcast and you wouldn't miss a thing because of how much telling they do. Velma constantly acts like she's the smartest person in the room when in fact she's just a narcissistic brat who can't tell how much of an idiot she is and needs to make everything about her when everyone is dealing with their own bs that a good friend would help with. I watched this show by others reacting to the episodes, bless their souls, and I feel bad for everyone who had to deal with Mindy; especially the animators, who had to make their jobs less traumatic by putting background gags that were funnier than the actual show. This show would be slightly better if it was it's own thing and didn't go after something that's been done 20 times already, may it be an adult remake of a kids cartoon due to the previous audience being adults now or just a Scooby Doo remake, just put this trend and the OG show to rest *PLEASE* .

It gave me "Not Another Teen Movie" or "Scary Movie" vibes. I know not a lot of folks are going to know what those two are, but basically they're parody movies that poke fun at cliché BS and there's SO MUCH of that in the first half of the first episode of Velma I cracked up. The jokes are bad, yeah, I'll give it that. Some lines are weird. You've got the "straight ace" Shaggy that's kinda butting into everything. Some people are mad Scooby isn't in it, I have to remind them that Scooby wouldn't have been born yet 😅. There's so much I could touch on for this series. It could be better if the storyline/character lines were cleaned up a bit, but it really gives me parody vibes HARRRRRD.
