It's SO disappointing they made Daphne a Queen Bee. She was one of the only characters I remember that were girly and not a bitch or a bimbo (mainly in mystery inc. The original Daphne didn't have a personality). They did the same to Stella in the Winx reboot.

Another really sad thing is it's not even true that none of the Scooby-Doo reboots have had deep plotlines. The plot of Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated actually ends up being very serious and well-done, and there's even an element of horror introduced while still being a kid's show.

Right? MI had a plot that separated the gang, and by the time they got back together again they only get a bit of a breather before finding out that their friendship might not even be real, but instead some predestined BS orchestrated by an Eldritch abomination that has been working over and dooming groups exactly like them for CENTURIES. It has sly references to HP Lovecraft, Twin Peaks, cameos other sleuthing cartoon series, nods to some of its previous incarnations (that line about Scrappy sends me every time) and real nightmare fuel scenarios and character deaths. AND it had MVP Vincent van Ghoul! So, yeah. This show could have, SHOULD have, done better.

Trying to make scooby doo darker and more adult is a super interesting concept considering that mysteries, especially true crime mysteries, often have darker adult themes where people get hurt. But leaving them in high school while adding a bunch of nudity and stuff like that feels really icky. They're children, I don't need a shower scene. Could've aged em up to college, could've had Velma going to college because she's smart, Shaggy being a stoner because he's Shaggy, Fred being the rich 'I don't need college I have daddy's money' and Daphne trying to make it in the world without college (modelling or influencer maybe?) That would've opened up SO many possible storylines and angles. But nah here's a bunch of naked children.

tbh, i think the show's main problem is that it's attached to the Scooby-Doo franchise. I mean, the characters aren't great, but if they were just some random teens solving a murder the show would probably just be classed as another Family Guy clone and the public would have left it at that

@zilesis1 I fully agree, the whole reason we hate it so much is because it tries to profit of something previously established and in the process ruins the love people have for it. Nah get that mean girls trope outta here. Maybe Daphne but velma? She feels like a straight up narcissistic asshole. "I'm better than you" type shit. Hell even Daphne to a degree but they just made her dumber than Velma. That's not good character writing. Wanna turn Daphne into a likeable asshole? Sure, you can do that. Just give her a proper narrative. Hell even I can do better than them: She can be a rich girl who never got proper attention from her parents due to them being constantly busy and pretends to be overly confident and stomps others to feel better about herself, when in reality it does nothing and she feels empty and sad. You can tackle that even BETTER in an adult show if you ask me, because you don't have to limit the words you use. That would've been a great way for her and Velma to connect, with velma being smart but socially awkward, making her sympathize with Daphne and help her through it. IT IS THAT EASY.

They could have made this about original characters set in the future of the Scooby universe. "Velma" could be a girl named, I dunno, Janette that idolizes the Mystery Incorporated, a group that, in the future has made a name for themselves for solving supernatural mysteries and Velma was her idol growing up. Janette would try to copy Velma's style so she could grow up to be a mystery solver as well, but the trauma over her mother's disappearance makes solving mysteries both her biggest dream and darkest trauma, causing an interesting clash as she rounds up the group of teenage misfits that would become the new Mystery Incorporated, but also not be carbon copies of the OGs, complete with their own quirks and flaws.

It's really not that hard to write the core characters of Scooby Doo... Fred: leader and occasional muscle of the group for doing the heavy stuff. He's the captain America type and keeps the group coordinated. To balance him out his negative trait is that he's kinda useless on his own. Daphne: the rich girl so she has resources. Also extremely good at social interaction and can pick up cues when they talk to suspects. She's basically street smart. Also the one reboot which has her learn martial arts was nice so do that again. Similarly to Fred her negative trait can be the fact that she's not book smart. Velma: the smartest and is the one who puts all the clues together. Negative trait, she is not good at talking with people Shaggy and Scooby: the lovable goofballs who have a knack for attracting trouble and gathering important clues. A negative trait would be the fact that he doesn't look so great but that's more than made up due to his charisma and the dude is just a good guy. And boom meet the gang. A good writer can have so much fun with this cast.

For me, as someone who likes designing and writing characters, the simpler the character the more creative you can get. You start with a one line for each positive and negative trait and develop them from there. If you start with too much it would be impossible to develop. In the end we are supposed to CONNECT with the character, you don't become friends with someone you know to the tea, you start with a first impression and go from there. And it seems like they couldn't do that in the show. Hell they could've made them actual likeable assholes and failed at that too. Imagine being this bad

Scooby Doo mystery incorporated actually got very dark, psychological and complex. Characters were brutally killed off(a supporting character drowns, a redeemed villain gets executed, a dog gets horribly injured in a stampede, and more), even if it was off-screen, and the climax was a slow boil and very sinister twist as a demonic entity that the gang had to take down with real violence.

When I was a teenage boy I wrote a godawful fanfiction about Velma being turned into a vampire so she and the gang get dragged into a supernatural mystery while Velma falls in love with a good Vampire that saved her from the one who bit her. Even that was better than this. Edit: I appreciate the praise but the fanfic was one of those fanfics where the OC takes over. The Vampire Love interest took over the story and pretty much became the main character. That's why I'm ashamed of it. Also, I wrote it on paper and have long since lost it. I'm a 22-year-old adult now and I made it when I was like 13-14. I have long since lost it (probably thrown away). Thanks for the praise though, I really appreciate it.

The part where Norville was being vulnerable about his feelings for Velma and then was met with laughter and invalidation kind of sealed how much they missed the mark with this show for me. I would've liked to see Velma admit that she isn't into any guy, establishing her sexuality in a more casual way. Then it could've been a bonding ish moment between the two and help the narrative of the gang coming together. With all this character assassination, and this meta and observational "humor" that doesn't have any kind of pay off I don't see myself getting through the series. I did like the animation and style; and honestly adult animation would be better if some creators didn't seem to try to copy trends of other adult animated shows. It's just sad to see so much potential wasted.

I don't think it was ever confirmed by her actual creator/IP holder as definitive to all versions of her? I'll be honest it comes across more as tokenising and an attempt to gain favour in the previous iteration (since it was only stated in a tweet long after the show ended, where she was very clearly only shown romancing men in the actual show) and in this one it seems there solely as an excuse to make her a man hating bitch.(she's a bitch to everyone tho) Neither is good representation, if you could call it representation at all. I don't mind them making her a lesbian in some iterations since Cyberchase and Mystery Incorperated did imply there's multiple different dimensions/versions where they're all different, which works in allowing the characters to be any/every combination of sexualites or gender. However, if you're going to assign a characetr a non-het sexuality for god's sake DO IT SOME BLOODY JUSTICE. Exactly! While that show is also very chaotic, it's perfectly in character for Harley Quinn, especially as throughout the show, it is through her eyes that we see Gotham. And even with the satire, the characters are for the most part true to their origins, the dark humour actually works, and we do get legitimately heartwarming moments in the series. None of these can be said for... whatever the hell this is. There's nothing wrong with dark adult comedy or satire, but those two terms do NOT equate to simply shitting on the source material for the fun of it. The new Velma show acts like it doesn't even understand the core characteristics of the major characters, with the titular character just being treated as a blank slate for the author to project herself into. Plus the fact that they made the same characters I practically worshipped as a kid into unlikeable idiots, because... reasons? While Harley Quinn is an affectionate parody of the DC Universe, Velma is just outright disrespectful to the original Mystery Inc gang.

Oh, you mean the character who consistently was the most observant, thoughtful, and intellectually capable person in the entire show without having to reduce herself to being mean or catty to do that? This entire show is trying to right a character wrong that had NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED If the writers actually cared about doing something mildly interesting than they'd have made the show about Daphne, considering that most people tend to see her as nothing but the dumb broad who gets captured, and actually showing how capable she is would have been a good way to show that how a person acts isn't necessarily how the outside world might think they ought to behave. But then instead this show literally doubles down on that and makes Daphne's character a stuck up bitch, purely because she's known as "the attractive one" from the show, because I guess being hot disqualifies you from being worthy of sympathy?

In recent years, though, they've started to make Daphne more of a Mary Sue in the cartoon-movies to make up for that "issue." And I'm not just saying that. One of the halloween specials directly had a dialogue that said Daphne's an "everyday Mary Sue," which she didn't deny. She's always been a good character, and hasn't been made to be a typical damsel-in-distress in new shows for a long while. But at the same time, the new movies have been trying so hard to prove that she's useful that it comes off as pushy and I'll-conceived. So I'm a little disappointed that Velma has gotten shoved off to the side as a result, and hasn't contributed as much as Daphne gets allowed to. And this terrible abomination of a show certainly isn't giving Velma any help either.

THEN that would've been a good reason for race-swaps. but the creators _don't_ have a reason to change the character's races in this show. well, apart from Velma, who is literally just acting as the creator's self insert. that just makes the whole situation even more sour

The sad thing is that Scooby Doo has already dabbled with dark one and it worked. Scooby Doo on Zombie Island did this and the whole series of 2011's Mystery Inc. did as well and they both totally nailed the darker tone they were going for. The blueprints were already there, the only thing missing was adult specific mature writing.

@@KaiDecadence The problem is that most writers still don't realize that an adult cartoon doesn't have to be a raunchy comedy. An R-rated horror version of Scooby Doo could work well, but the main 5 characters still need to be likable and contribute to the overall goal. Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy/Scooby all have different skill sets that make each of them valuable to the group.

@@matthewmazzatto8003 Oh for sure, I'm not saying that in adult comedy, the characters have to be unlikable because this show is a good example of how awful it can be to watch when you do that. The Scooby gang would be so easy to mature while still making them feel like themselves which is what makes this even more cumbersome to see. Again, just take what they did with Zombie Island where the gang was clearly in their early 20s and leading maturer lives.

See, this isn't even the first time there has been a Scooby-Doo show that's been dark. Mystery Incorporated was pretty dark in it's premise, but it went out of it's way to define who each character was too the point that it's basically the gold standard of the franchise. Shaggy and Scooby are nerdy goofballs who love to eat and scare fairly easy, but are quite smart in their own right and useful to the team. Daphne actually is helpful and quite capable of defending herself from the people in costumes. Like she kicks ass and takes names in Mystery Incorporated. Velma is the smart one but also very snarky and also probably bisexual, except it's done so naturally that you hardly notice. Despite her sarcasm she is a great friend to the entirety of the cast and probably part of the reason Fred's traps work so well. Fred's a complete dork who loves to make traps, has weird but interesting passions, and completely misses all of Daphne's hints. He figures it out eventually though so that's good. The new show feels like a full blown murder attempt of everything that has been established about the characters thus far.

As far as I can say about race swapping in this. At least they didn’t make the red head black for once, they still erased a group of people by making the red head Asian but they didn’t go the obvious route. Why does Hollywood hate Gingers?
@_Nyxus_
@_Nyxus_ 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of issues with the race swapping imo. It's like..if I made a specific character, I would want that character to remain the way I originally chose to make it. If my character is white, then they should stay white. If the character is black, then they should stay black (I absolutely love the idea behind the Spiderman series where there's a bunch of different versions of him because while the hero is the same, the character behind the mask is unique). I don't have an issue with representation in a series, I fully support it. But the way they do it is cheap and lazy. Other races deserve their own stories to empower them, not ones that were already created. For example, there was a deaf, darker skinned mermaid in the Little Mermaid show back in the day and it would have been incredible for a series to follow someone like that, or be in the same universe as Ariel, rather than Ariel herself changing. Or taking the route of Black Panther and Wakanda! By changing the skin tone of characters that have been around for decades, it puts more importance on skin tone and gives it more attention, rather than being represented the way it should be. It's hard to explain it in a way that doesn't come across as racist 🤔I'm not trying to be, but I do believe characters should be able to be who their creators originally designed them to be AND have proper representation for all races equally, rather than having a skin tone battle and the constant disappointment of that being the only kind of "effort" a company gives to minorities.

@_Nyxus_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@realestsienna With the Ariel thing it goes with what I said. Ariel, as her original design, wasn't black. This is looking at it purely from an art/character design perspective, not a racial thing. Mulan was Chinese, thus if they made her any other skin tone, I feel like it goes against the original character's design. I, personally, wouldn't like it if I designed a character with grey skin and someone took them and made them purple. If we look at company production issue, skin tone changes are the cheapest and simplest way to "add representation." Companies cop out of things like this all the time in the same way and it's not fair to the minorities. Same thing with job hunting. A lot of companies will hire a minimum number of poc to claim "equality" or "diversity" when in reality they could do far better. Why not make an entirely original film with more poc mermaids? Because "Ariel" will already get them attention and they don't really have to come up with an entirely new plot for it. Strange World had a ton of diversity and its own plot, so they've shown they can do this, yet they didn't even advertise for it.
