AHHHH I LOVE ARTIST DEEP DIVE. AND I LOVE THIS CHANNEL. AND I LOVE JOY DIVISION. The discussion in this episode is great, and I read this quote I forget where, and it was like "punk is 'fuck you' and post punk is 'I'm fucked'". Can't wait for more of these!!!!

Love it that you have reviewed this band, one of my favourite bands at the moment. Closer my favourite album by them (The Eternal is a beautiful song) RIP Ian

The Eternal is my favourite song in the world. You should check out the live encore version from the collector’s edition of Closer.

I had absolutely no idea that Closer was more critically acclaimed. But Decades is still my favorite JD song. Also, I'm going to nominate Bruce Springsteen. I'm not sure if I've mentioned him before. Don't know if you're big fans of his, but that's my two cents.

I always thought Unknown Pleasures was wayyy more liked and famous - maybe just because of the t-shirts lol.

I thought Unknown Pleasures was okay. Has the better individual highlights as you guys said; She's Lost control is probably my fav JD song but, Closer is overall the better album for me as I prefer the more expansive sounds. I always thought Unknown Pleasures was the more critically acclaimed album though? Or at least, it's definitely the more iconic/popular of the two right?

i think you guys should do a aimilar artist deep dive with the smiths, or else a discussion of the origin of indie music in the 80s with bands like the smiths, sonic youth, rem and the pixies

Glad you guys devoted a Deep Dive to Joy Division. It's the first of your shows I've heard. I listen to Unknown Pleasures when I want to hear something more driving, something with more of that intelligent punkish feel. I listen to Closer when I want to hear something more ethereal, more atmopheric or elegiac. This is wild generalization, of course. I suppose I listen to Closer more often than Unknown Pleasures. I had tickets to their Hollywood show in my wallet when I heard the news about Ian. A brilliant life cut way too short. Still hurts after all these years. In Pace Requiescat.

Hey, guys! Great Deep Dive on Joy Division here. Never really listened to them, but I'll definitely be checking Unknown Pleasures out soon. Also, I wanted to commend Jake for that album production segment he did. I was the one who asked for that last week and it made me feel super happy that you guys did that. Really in-depth explanation, and I feel it was kind of necessary to do in the context of that album. Hopefully you include a little section for the production on all Deep Dives and future episodes :) My recommendation for a good Deep Dive would be the band Muse. As I'm sure you guys know, they're very different now than what they were like in the early 00s and I'd love to hear you guys talk about their discography, what they accomplished, and the evolution of their sound. In the same vein, you guys just HAVE to do one for Radiohead, too! Regardless, I'm loving this new series and can't wait for the next one! Thanks for all the work and love you guys put into these!

+KYUBIMATIAS That production rant was definitely Tom (this is Jake). Tom is an expert at all things production IMO.

this was really awesome, especially everything about the production on unknown pleasures! Really starts to make sense with how it's such a driving album but at the same time sort of keeps its distance and is not exactly DANCEABLE... thanksomuch

Interesting tidbit. Morrissey and the future "Smiths" were also at the sex pistols Manchester show.
@glennjonsson18195 жыл бұрын
At the time albums were still made with some sort of concept. "Unknown Pleasures" is a bit more down in the cellar. "Closer" lyrically, towards the end gives me a sense of relief. I rate "New Dawn Fades" and "Twenty-Four Hours" as Ian's finest work in a studio. Where were they heading? "Love will tear us apart", "Atmospere" and "Ceremony" provides a clue. Ian would have left the band anyway. Or been sacked. Loved your pod, guys. Thanks!

That was a great discussion about Joy Division! Could you perhaps do a review about Giles Corey?
@airtwo22709 жыл бұрын
you guys know their name wasn't really about literally dividing up joy, right? it's a reference to the concentration camps during the holocaust where certain women were set aside to get raped/become prostitutes, or something. far more intense than just 'warsaw' or 'new order' - let's face it, the band loved their nazi imagery. isn't there a lyric or a live performance where someone shouts about Rudolph Hess, too?
@caveguy226 жыл бұрын
"you all forgot rudolf hess" :p

they have denied any nazi connections
@Tomversal4 жыл бұрын
@@samulihirsi Yeah maybe they have but of course the imagery is Nazi inspired, the cover of An Ideal For Living, the name Joy Division, the way they dressed early on

This podcast is a mixed bag. You do a good job, but I heard these records in the mid-80s when there was ZERO information. I had to create the narrative of the artist through interpreting the music with only the songs and the knowledge of the singers suicide. That mystery has now been stolen from music listeners by the internet and cheapens the impact of the music. I feel sorry for this generation. You will NEVER experience that.
@kristianTV19746 жыл бұрын
Jim Walker yes agreed, I was 14 personally in 88 when I discovered them (New Order first, Joy Division very shortly afterward). They still had that mystery about them at that point.
@dpeplau6 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent point. These albums really have their maximum impact when you don't know every detail about the band, the label, and what they went through. Omne ignotum pro magnifico est.
@jimmyf95453 жыл бұрын
Jim, can't agree more on the lack of readily available information and the mystery it created on me when I first heard Joy Division in, I believe, my sophomore year in high school, 1988-89. I dropped the cassette of Unknown Pleasures into my walkman and was floored by Disorder and knew this was going to stick. I wanted to know everything I could about the band and it's members. All you had was the library, the record shop and your friends to obtain this information. Took effort to research and I believe that was part of the fever and enjoyment of learning about these guys. Now, 1 minute on Google gives you all the sources available and there is little mystery in how to obtain what you need to learn what you want to know. Everything has it's good and bad, it's somewhere in the middle where you find the utopia of human living, as it's always been. Moderation is perfection.
