If I recall correctly, he did try and screw the lads over in regards to merchandise... hence the split in 2007. Yes they screwed him back by trying to shift all the licensing and giving him a measly % of what he was getting in royalties, but I really hope they can settle their differences. I get the feeling Hook is a little remorseful that he's no longer a member, although he should be proud of his achievements with The Light.

@@Metal-Possum it was more due to him hanging onto Rob's share of the Haçienda name ownership (after Rob passed away in 1999, his widow bequeathed his share to New Order. Hooky kept it, because the other three had bailed out of the business in 1994. So in a way, I see his side, but it was still like the executor of a will deciding to just pocket all of the money instead of sharing it with those who were legally entitled to it.)

I'm 50 and have been a New Order/Joy Division fan since the age of 15 (1987). I saw New Order in 1989, and both bands are such a HUGE part of my upbringing and adult life. I was heartbroken about New Order. SUCH a sad ending. :(

Hook and the others have worked out the licensing royalties since this video was taken, they are still not together but Hook is no longer angry about licensing or royalties anymore like he was in the past. I've seen Hook and The Light and also the others who are now calling themselves "New Order" perform in 2018, both were great shows. It was especially a nice treat to see a full set of Joy Division songs played live by Peter Hook and the Light, I never thought I'd see the day when at least one member of New Order/Joy Division would perform a bunch of Joy Division songs live, it was great!

Agreed, I take Movement's FACT.50 as my DJ namesake, but Low-Life is the best of both of their sides, upbeat/pop and dark/brooding. Face Up is probably the best example of both styles being blended perfectly.

I think Power corruption and lies is their best and bravest, as in most experimental album. I remember not too long after its release, putting Brotherhood on repeat play, thinking that the songs are going to show themselves any moment now....they never did! If only the "songs" had been as good as the cover.

What a shame that a band that has stayed with me from childhood through to adulthood and has been a massive influence on my musical tastes has ended up falling out. I was at a twisted sister show in 2014 and this would have been when all of the original members put aside their differences. Dee Snider told a story about how their first get together went south very quick. One of the members pulled a gun and pointed it at Snider in the meeting. He told this in front of thousands of people while that member was on stage with him. His advice to other bands is that they have to put arguements and hatred aside. He didn't give any analogies and just flat out told bands to grow up. That speech went on for about 10 minutes or so and from what I remember the whole audience was kind of quiet. Those words seemed to have resonated with a lot of people. A year later A.J Pero past away and the band disbanded shortly after. BUT to be able to get together one last time with all of the original members touring and playing Stay Hungry in its entirety is something that those members will probably cherish forever.

Sorry I dont agree, I love Pete with New Order in 80's, but solo his voice sounded like a drunk dad at a wedding. I saw him twice that year just to make sure he just wasnt having a bad night in Austin Tx ... ugh, no it happened again in Dallas. Bass was amazing still but no no no on vocals :(

@SgtBaker16 Depends what you mean by fine. If you mean making some cash, then yes. If you mean being relevant then no. No one cares about them, their music lacks passion now. Barney can't sing to save his life, so Stephen on drums is the only real semblance of talent with history still in there. Barney was carried all the way by the others all the time. Decent input in JD, but once he started singing, it was a downward spiral, and he become more important than his input actually was. They did well to last as long as they did. N.O now isn't N.O as anyone remembers it, it's a different thing completely.

I remember hearing in an interview with Hooky than when Curtis died the symmetry was gone. New Order became a great band, but I can't imagine Sumner taking over as much as he did if Curtis were still alive. So much of Joy Divisions music was based around the bass guitar, but with New Order it's based around synthesiser's and Hooky's bass was reduced to the odd bass solo during instrumental breaks. What i've heard of New Order post-Peter Hook sounds ok, but it's only New Order in name.

I tend to side with Hooky, New Order ceased to exist in 2007, what we have now is two New Order tribute bands, Peter Hook & the Light and the other three who call themselves New Order. An essential part of the New Order sound is Peter Hook's bass without that they are not New Order. Why did Bernard Steve & Gillian not carry on as Bad Lieutenant which they were between 2007 and 2011.

The current New Order is essentially a Bernard Sumner solo project. Stephen Morris makes no songwriting contributions at all, which is a shame since he was integral to a lot of earlier New Order tracks.

Thanks to Peter for being the most excellent bass player ever in a band that created some of the best electronic tracks with a bass mixed in. Perfect Kiss is truly an excellent example of what a legendary bassist can contribute to an electronic symphony of sounds and vocals. I miss Peter and the real New Order sounds just like I miss Alan classical influences on Depeche Mode. It was awesome and beautiful while it lasted.

This tracks with various interviews I've read back when music magazines were still a thing. They've been in that "can't be in the same room" mode for decades. Peter had an online q & a back in the late 90s and was super surly when asked if they were getting back together. He said something along the lines of "snowball's chance in hell." It didn't hold but that happens. Bills. Even though I got into other things in the early 2000s, this makes me curious to hear the recent 2 albums just to hear the difference. It's been a while.

Hooky is a legend and all his points make sense. You need the friction sometimes but you have to remember you're all grown ups. So often in bands the stuff staring you in the face is shoved straight through the window, sometimes literally! God bless him for his wonderful honesty. I think this is what happens to so many groups rather they be siblings, childhood friends, total strangers or a combination. They are expected to record an album for 12 months of 16 hour days where arguments ensue, tempers are frayed and beautiful music is created. After spending all of this time with these people then you have to go on a 16 month tour with each other. Throw into the mix alcohol, drugs and record executives, I don't care how much you love each other at first you're going to hate each other at one point. We hope as their fans that they make up but so many don't.

Wow, I can feel the passion and emotion in Peter. He says a lot of things relevant to many people. That immense pressure due to business arrangements would have been intolerable, it would have been a real struggle for each person, let's not underestimate their burden. Peter also referres to the legacy they have created, that is poignant, something that can get easily overlooked "in the heat of battle", to acknowledge it is a good sign. Sometimes though when all said and done with intense relationships, time to step back, try and put incidents/events/fights into the boxes, pop them on the shelf and move on. It must be very difficult to even contemplate that when so much has happened, how does a person "tidy up" after all that? The relationships seems to be very strained, which is understandable, in those situations it is better not to say or even imply any negative things about the other person but to concentrate on one's own efforts. Peter, tell us how exciting and interesting your latest project is. Not why it's better than NO/JD but how you have built upon it.

Yes if Lennon had hanged himself and Paul had then insisted on dominating everyone afterwards and refusing to play old songs. Hook likes Joy Division. So do I. He has wanted to play the songs for 40 years. And someone should play the songs before everyone involved is dead. Truth is, Sumner is jealous of a dead guy. He knows Curtis' songs are miles better than anything he has ever made. That's why I think he won't play them.

I have loved New Order ever since I heard Disorder from Joy Division. Loved Blue Monday, and I think it’s one of the greatest musical pieces in history. Loved Get Ready and Crystal is a song I listen to atleast once a week. After that there was a period of disappointment. When I heard Music Complete, it All came back to me with full force. It was exceptional for a band of that age to put out a record that I thought was up there with one of their best. It was their first without Hook. I have to say (and it hurts), but I think the space contributed to some great creativity on New Order’s part. They did a great job with Music Complete and I’m not sure it would have been so, if Hook and Sumner would have been in the same room. Sometimes, the greatest of minds, don’t always get along! What matters is what they do with that. New Order are still making great music... Not sure what Hook is doing.

Hooky has always given a very honest interview (seemingly, don't know him or what actually happened obviously). Bernard was the person that introduced the keyboards into JD and Ian loved it. It's a shame it's happened but i've seen videos of both new New Order and PHatL playing and Hooky really gives it some. You can see it's a labour of love with him.

My sis and I had the privilege of meeting Peter and the band in 1993 after winning a contest to fly to Chicago to see New Order at the World Music Theater. One of the coolest moments of my life. Peter was so friendly and nice to chat with and we spent the whole evening hanging out with him.. New Order hasn't been the same since Hooky left. I will always love New Order but until they work out their differences and go back to the roots of the band, and make it about the music, New Order is not complete. They had such a special magical sound that only those 4 can send out into the universe. I hope to see them all together on stage again some day (and not just to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!)

Interesting interview, its always good to see peoples perspectives and how they change as they get older. Hooky admits his part in the break up. 0:47 - That's really disheartening for me to hear. Republic is probably one of my all-time favourite records, period. It's really upsetting for me to hear that during the production of one of my favourite indie rock albums I've ever listened to, everyone in the band was at each others' throats and hated each other with a virulent passion. So many great songs on that album - Regret, Spooky, Liar, Young Offender, and Special. And now my enjoyment is tainted in a sense, knowing how unenjoyable the experience was for the band itself to produce it.

I don’t think it’s so much the being-at-throats thing so much as Bernard Sumner disregarding all of the work the other three did in the months beforehand and unilaterally creating a load of new solo tracks in the studio that the rest of the band barely appears on, and presenting it as a band effort. And then inevitably creaming off a much bigger chunk of the proceeds of what was a big selling album when the others were left with very little. According to Hook’s book about it anyway.

I discovered NO in 1987. Back then I really enjoyed going through their back catalogue (Low Life, Brotherhood, etc) and then discovering the much darker and edgier Joy Division. Along with many bands (Depeche Mode, Ultravox, etc) I feel it's difficult for a band to survive decades of time together. Not only personally, but with musical direction. Certain musicians, ie Bowie adapted their music over several decades and most albums are still enjoyable. Eventually "creative differences" and personality clashes inevitably ruin the whole thing. It's a rare treat to have a band that has decades together and can still put out good albums. Along side of this, the music model today of "singles" one after another, rinse and repeat, ad nauseam. Only old dudes like me want to hear the whole "album". To reflect on Hooky's interview. I can't even listen to Get Ready or Sirens Call. Believe me, I tried really hard and after many listens of hoping I would begin to enjoy them and build an attachment, but the albums just fall flat. They just sound very vanilla and mainstream for lack of a better word. All good I still enjoy my beloved 1987 Substance double CD. Ceremony, Everything Goes Green and Temptation are my three most favourite songs from NO. They are the perfect combination of what NO is so damn good at....addictive high register basslines (thanks Hooky!) fast hypnotic beats (thanks Mr. Morris!) soothing synths and good lyrics and vocals.(thanks Barney). In the words of Geoffrey Chaucer, 1374. "All good things must come to an end"

I saw both New Order and Peter Hook and The Light perform in 2018 and both shows were great. New Order did stuff from their entire catalogue, from the classics to their latest album. Peter Hook and The Light performed two sets of music from each Substance album, one set of songs from New Order's Substance 1987 and one set of Joy Division's Substance album. It was real treat to see Joy Division songs performed live by Peter Hook and The Light (who did an amazing job!), prior to the fallout between Hook and the others it was very rare for New Order to ever play a Joy Division song, only once in a blue moon when they did a rare encore (which they almost never do since they have always thought the idea of encores were insulting to the audience). Both New Order and Peter Hook and the Light concerts were great, I recommend seeing both if you can. It was nice to see this video of Peter Hook giving his side of the story, gives me more insight to why Hook and the rest parted ways. I would however, love to see them get together again, Hook was an integral part of New Order and it would be nice to see them perform all together once again. I only saw them as a full band once in 1993.

Peter I totally agree with what you said. Music is so important to people and Joy Division started a massive influence of different bands , including New Order. I have always had great respect for JD for being so important to influence others. It's too bad New Order had to become something so corporate that they lost the true reason of why people listen to music. Barney was my favorite member but I always felt that Hooky was a man for the fans. IIRC, he was the one back-cataloging NO's performances, he was the one who wanted to dig in deeper into their catalog for set lists, he was the one that wanted to tour more. I feel that after the break up, Barney only added the deeper cuts to the setlists to spite Hooky. I also feel Barney was the one watering down NO's music with lyrics that only got worse with each new album--not that they were the greatest to begin with--and increasingly added unnecessary backup vocals to every freaking song.

A sad ending to band that was a huge part of my life in my early adulthood and which got me through some challenging times. A devoted follower since Joy Division when I was college. I think Hook provided plenty of creativity and I think was a big part of the sound they created that lives on with hundreds of techo-pop bands to this day. They all have the New Order techo-rock all over.

This is a sad interview, and it is interesting that at 6:53 Hook invokes the spirits of Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, and Ian Curtis to try and make his case for being readmitted to New Order, I assume he is hoping the emotions invoked by the memory of their dead comrades will overcome Sumner's resistance. It hasn't done so far, but it gives an insight into the band's politics. I suspect Hook once thought there was more equality between him and Sumner than there actually was, but what was actually true was power in the group lay with Sumner and not Hook. Many people think there is no New Order without Hook, but there first post Hook record was actually quite well received, slightly better than their previous two records were.

Imo New Order were never the same after Technique. Republic was too glossy, at least it was still synthpop. Get Ready was too glossy AND an ill-advised attempt to play indie-rock. Sirens was a mess, some tracks were woeful. Music Complete had better production, but it was still a far cry from the masterpieces of the 80's.

I'd back you up on that. It's not often that you read an autobiography and end up liking the author less after reading it but that's exactly how I felt after reading Hook's book. I was in flight school when republic came out and I thought it was great! Brings me back and still listen to it. Had no idea all this was going on and wondered why I never heard from them.
