Poor Mat Talbot was a sick and deluded man. I visited his home as a young girlwith my mother and even at that young age I was horrified that this obviously mentally unwell person was being presented to me as a saint. To see those chains in real life screamed horror and I knew,eventhen, that Hod did not call on this poor man,or any human being, to do this to himself. No-one heard of the term self harm then but this actually was an extreme version of that brought on by his self hatred and lack of self worth which probably also caused his drinking. My heart went out to him then and still does but PLEASE do not elevate this poor man's illness to some kind of sanctity. I has nightmares after visiting that humble room and am truly shocked that in the 21st century people are trying to normalise this mental aberration as something holy. Yes, he was a devout man, but he was tormented. These extremes are more than abnormal, they are dangerous. God rest his soul and I pray that no-one viewing this video is provoked into emulating his crazy behaviour.

Thanks be to God, I years ago was able to visit the shrine of Matt Talbot in Dublin, to specifically pray for the conversion of an alcoholic family member. This person had a terrible health scare on account this addiction, eventually went cold turkey and hasn't had a drink since. Dear Matt Talbot thank you for this favor - and now pray for the conversion of this soul and all our family members, to the Traditional Catholic Faith!

I have been in AA this time around since 2008 and I've been sober since August 18, 2010. I've heard Matt Talbot's name being mentioned in AA meetings in the past but this is the first time I heard his story. I am also Catholic and doing the 12 steps played a role in my conversion/reversion back to the Catholic faith. The AA groups I've belonged to are very liberal and anti-catholic which now explains why I didn't hear much more about him in AA. God Bless you Matt Talbot!!! Dominus Vobiscum

Dear Venerable Matt Talbot please pray for Kenny in Florida , a long time alcoholic who has destroyed his marriage and family and also for John in Alabama who is addicted to beer!
@jimh40056 ай бұрын
Even with the grace of God, it was extremely difficult for an alcoholic to remain sober before Alcoholics Anonymous came into existence (1930's). The list of His favorite prayers near the end of the video is very telling about the advanced level of his spirituality. I believe being on his Knees and able to remain motionless for hours, indicates that Matt experienced deep contemplative prayer and perhaps even visions and ecstasies. A BIG Thank You to those involved with the production and posting of this video!

I think more individuals with alcohol or drug issues past or present will heal more from LOVE than harsh penances; love is in the Mass where Jesus lives in our hearts and minds and bodies. However, I am sure there was a deeper, reason Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception, asked him to do this for the conversion of others as well.
@maryannstypa48596 ай бұрын
We aren’t asked to do harsh penances but in doing what Our Lady asked- he saved many souls I’m sure. He had freewill to say no . Only a few are chosen by Hod to do this. Yes, it’s all about love and Matt loved Our Lord and Our Lady. The Eucharist is our strength as it was to Matt. God bless

In the image of the priest in the confessional used at the start of this presentation, what kind of prayer beads is the priest using, I’ve never seen that type before?
@letspraytherosary44106 ай бұрын
I'm thinking those are just prayer beads. The people that put this together seem to be Lutherans pretending to be Catholics. There's a lot of small inaccuracies. But unfortunately, that's all I have to work with.

The self-harm penance never made sense to me. If violence is a sin, then violence towards one's own body seems sinful to me. I suppose if it helped him to destroy his passions. Orthodox and Protestants don't view penance in the same way.
