Venezuela Likely the First Nation to Lose All Its Glaciers | Firstpost America
Venezuela has reached a grim milestone in the struggle against climate change. It has likely become the first country to lose all of its glaciers. This comes after climate scientists The International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) downgraded its Humboldt glacier to an ice field, saying it had become "too small to be classed as a glacier". According to scientists, the glacier has shrunk from 4.5 square kilometres to 0.02 square kilometres, which is equivalent to two football pitches. Researchers say Venezuela lost its last glacier due to abnormally high temperatures. The South American country was once home to six glaciers but lost five of them by 2011.
